4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, But Still Lacking
There are great songs on this album, with my favorites being from the Austin years and "Blue Sky..." . But I wholeheartedly agree that this cannot be an "ultimate" collection without "South Canadian River Song" or "Alleys of Austin", both great songs which defined the early years for this performer. 2.0 out of 5 stars Ultimate?
How can this be the "Ultimate Collection" of Michael Murphey without "South Canadian River Song"? Or "Alleys of Austin" and "Blessing in Disguise"? Thank goodness "Geronimo's Cadillac" and "Boy from the Country" made it on the album. Why isn't "Cosmic Cowboy Souvenir" available? It's a great album...

But I wholeheartedly agree that this cannot be an "ultimate" collection without "South Canadian River Song" or "Alleys of Austin", both great songs which defined the early years for this performer. It's certainly worth having, but you'll still need a vinyl copy of the original Cosmic Cowboy album.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is one of the best MMM possible...but it could be even, May 25, 2002

The songs that were chosen for this album were fantastic. Each one - especially the old ones - could be played today to show songwriters how to really write songs. And MMM's voice and abilities means he can do all styles and do them well. Any fan of MMM - early or late - will love this album.

But I do agree with the reviewer on this page who said 'how could this be the ultimate collection?'. There are too many great MMM songs NOT on this album...like 'South Canadian River Song' or my all-time favorite 'Tonight We Ride' (best song I've EVER heard - words and music sizzle) or a gospelly song like 'Lights of the City'.

So this album needs to be 2 disks in order to really be the ultimate...butit is the closetest thing to it that you can find!

It's a great album that deserves to be available for those who have not had the pleasure of hearing heartfelt music from one of Austin's best.

5.0 out of 5 stars All of 3M's best music on one album!!!, December 4, 2001

Wow - this album has all his best music! From the Lewis and Clark Expedition to his rendition of Jesse Winchester's "I'm Gonna Miss You, Girl", every song sounds fantastic. The quality of sound is excellent and the selection really shows 3M's ability to write just about every kind of music out there. In hearing some of the old songs, it made me wish that his record companies would reissue all of his albums on CD...Because I am certain that he has other great songs on those earlier albums that need to be heard. If you want an album that is 5-star from first to last, this is it!!!

i liked nearly all the tracks.i was only familiar with a few of these.i may look into getting more of his catalog.a 2-disc would have been nice, but he`s been on multiple labels over many years.this may be as good as a best of gets.

How could you pack more first class music onto a single disc? Granamo's Cadillac, Calico Silver, I Feel Good, etc -- all great road trip music! Buy it, play it and sing along as loudly as you can, with the top down!

You go Michael!

5.0 out of 5 stars "cosmic cowboy meets blue sky-night thunder", October 2, 2001
This review is from: Ultimate Collection (Audio CD)
Late '60s we saw this singer/songwriter Michael Martin Murphey, who's the virtuoso in the field of various instruments(piano/guitar/harmonica)...with an uplifting style that gives the listener a free-spirited and exhilarating fix.

Let's start with some stand outs ~ "WILDFIRE", big song from one of my favorite albums "Blue Sky-Night Thunder"..."WHAT'S FOREVER FOR", a truer statement was never spoken...but the opening track is the classic "I FEEL GOOD (I FEEL BAD)", featuring Murphey with the Lewis & Clarke Expedition, brings back some good memories...entire CD is a must have for a fan (even if you're not) this is one great musical story, told through 21 hand-picked selections from the very beginning.

You might try other Hip-O releases ~ "Jerry Jeff Walker Ultimate Collection" (088-112-563-2)..."John Hiatt Anthology" (314-556-134-2)..."Delbert McClinton Ultimate Collection" (HIPD-40170)...please check out my reviews on amazon.com/music.

Total Time: 79:27 on 21 Tracks ~ Hip-O Records 314-556-698-2 ~ (2001)
