Mostly "Best of Nils",
By
This review is from: Ultimate Collection (Audio CD)
Whether this is the 'ultimate' Nils collection depends on whether you're a long-time fan or not. A couple of omissions have occurred. His signature song, "Back It Up", isn't on this CD, nor is his blistering version of Bobby Womack's "It's All Over Now." The former can be found on Nils Lofgren, "Nils Lofgren" (his first solo disc), which I suppose is the idea - buy that CD too. Okay, I won't begrudge this CD that little faux-pas; anything that adds to Nils' coffers in some way is OK by me.Other than that, the songs on this CD are all great and showcase Nils' amazing abilities on guitar. Check out the white-hot Stratocaster licks on "Keith Don't Go" (his ode to Keith Richards), "Cry Tough", and "I Came to Dance". But there's more to Nils than just great guitar - songs like "I Don't Want to Know", "Shine Silently", and "Wonderland" show a tender side and a gift for melody alongside the harder-rocking songs. The lesser-known cuts on this CD ("Mud in Your Eye") are also good to hear and round out this collection. Even after his stints with Bruce in the E-Street Band, Nils is still not quite a household name, which is a shame because there's plenty of great music on this album. And if you ever get a chance to see him live, go - he's definitely worth the price of admission.

Best introduction to Nils,

Buy this, you will love it. Nils Lofgren is one of the most dynamic guitarists in rock history. His singing is angelic, and the songs are fantastic.
I truly more of his albums will be remastered and re-released, but for now, this is the best introduction to his music.

The Back It Up omission shocked me. It is indeed his signature song. The best Nils, though is the live Night After Night double LP. Not even sure that ever came out on CD (and too lazy to check in mid typeism). I'm from the Maryland suburbs of DC so Nils is a local hero (whom sadly I have never seen live, I don't get out that much). I'm sure to most he's the guitarist for the Boss who wasn't in the Sopranos or the Underground garage. Grfin and Nils' solo work are top notch rock, and it's too bad he's a niche artist/sideman. And since my first name is Keith, I've always thought, I'd never take your fun away guy, who gave me way too much. Though I've never been a Pirate's dad or hung out with Amita Pallenberg, so I know I ain't really that guy. Nils is truly a master guitarist and created some great stright ahead rock songs. Buy this, download, borrow a copy from somebody. Just get it . Soon. Today. Now.
