The Stylistics were one of the most successful soul groups of the mid-seventies, having a string of major hits on both sides of the Atlantic. Their lead singer, Russell Thomkins, had a very distinctive falsetto voice ensuring that a Stylistics record is immediately recognizable as such.

The Stylistics initially worked with Thom Bell as their producer. Between 1971 and 1974, they had nine straight top forty hits in America. During this period, they had six British hits, three of which made the top ten. Of the American hits that didn't chart in Britain, the best may be You are everything. Their last and biggest hit with Thom Bell as producer was You make me feel brand new, which peaked at number two in both Britain and America. Among their other hits in both countries during this period were Betcha by golly wow, I'm stone in love with you and Rocking roll baby.

After the huge success of You make me feel brand new, Van McCoy took over as producer. Their American fortunes took a dive but the Stylistics maintained their run of success in Britain until 1976 - indeed, they had even more success in Britain with Van McCoy as producer than they had with Thom Bell.

The Stylistics had a UK number one with Can't give you anything but my love, while Let's put it all together, Sing baby sing, Na na is the saddest word, Can't help falling in love (previously a UK number one hit for Elvis Presley in 1962 and a top three UK hit for Andy Williams in 1970), Funky weekend and Sixteen bars all made the UK top ten.

This compilation includes all their British and American singles hits as well as three of the four tracks of an EP that made the UK singles chart. So, finally and not before time, we have a definitive hits collection that will satisfy fans on both sides of the Atlantic.

INTRODUCTION:

The Stylistics was a vocal group from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, consisting of Russell Thompkins Jr. (lead), Airrion Love, James Smith, James Dun and Herbie Murrell. Although they have many major hits, for some unknown reasons, their CDs are hard to come by. The rare one that I got was Best of Stylistics, a 10 song CD released on Amherst Records in 1985. Recently, there are other greatest hits compilations, such as Volume 2 of the Best Of, but still inadequate. On Bilboard Hot 100, they have 17 charted singles. On R&B chart, they have 32 singles. After I have just painstakingly compiled A Complete Singles Discography, to my amazement, they had actually 49 singles (charted and uncharted, from 1971 to 1992, but only 95 songs, 3 being repeated). Their labels were Avco (1971 – 1976), H&L (1976 – 1978), Mercury (1978 – 1979), TSOP (1980 – 1982), StreetWise (1984 – 1986) and finally Amherst (1991 – 1992).

CONTENT:

This 2 CD set, released by Mercury Records from UK in 2005, contains 36 songs.

POSITIVE POINTS:

1 This is the most complete compilation to date, covering both US and UK charts from 1971 to 1979. All the major singles are included. Of course 36 songs out of 95 songs are by no means adequate. But I have checked all the other Stylistics CDs currently available, they do not match the completeness of this set.
2 The sound is very well remastered, clean with no hiss. The lead vocal is crystal clear, while the back up instrumental tracks are all clearly defined. Good sound.
3 The songs are arranged chronologically.
4 The essay by Dave McAleer from Guinness Book of British Hit Singles is informative and well written.

NEGATIVE POINTS:

1 As I stated above, 59 songs are still missing.

"The Ultimate Collection" aptly describes this compilation of songs from one of the premier 1970's soul vocal groups. All their hits are included in this double CD set. Over 2 hours of music. It's as good as it gets.

Super mo-town group of singers, from days gone by, they do not have old school music like this now, brings back super memories, from a super singing group, worth the money, for sure,,

Nothing to really say that hasn't been said. The Stylistics are one of those groups that every single they released was GOLD. And pure POP to my ears. The magic of the vocals with the lyrics with the arrangements with the music was surely contemporary POP and R&B at it's best. But what I really liked about this collection was that it is one of the more comprehensive collections of their songs in ONE collection, as opposed to being spread out across several CD's.

And the remastering is well done - not too loud (which often is mistaken for "remastering") and clean and crisp.

Totally happy with this purchase.
