My heart nearly sank when I saw that this title may be going out of print; I purchased at least 5 copies when it was released based on what has happened to wonderful CDs like this in the past. Toni Childs is one of the most distinctive and, yes, accessible songstresses in the tradition of Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell, Buffy Sainte-Marie, and Nina Simone. If that lists sounds far apart in styles, yet appealing, then you'll understand Toni Childs. The African and other world rhythms that punctuate most of her work are all on display here; I dare anyone to listen to "Zimbabwe" or "Let The Rain Come Down" without feeling your spirit being noticeably lifted, nourished, and rejuvenated. While "Union" and "House of Hope" are also must-haves, this is an outstanding collection of some of Ms. Child's best work. That voice will haunt you and her songs will enrich your life in ways that only the most precious performers can.

Toni Childs latest release - "ULTIMATE COLLECTION" is from Hip-O Records, featuring fifteen tracks of an extraordinary journey on the life and music dedicated to shining light on the darkness.

Childs philosphy is you never get anywhere if you stay in one place. As singer and songwriter, Childs brings the listener along to whatever magical or mysterious, painful or primal place the road has so far led, with the hope of having a companion in spirit to make this journey less difficult for all who join the caravan.

All selections possess a unique dark style, with her strange voice, but touching lyrics. The main stand out: "THE WOMAN'S BOAT", speaks not only for herself, but for any women, as well as men...this song is a masterpiece...a must have just for this track.

Entire Cd is an emotional experience, a certain maturity of life and wisdom, complete musical offerings on Childs home turf...revealing the intensity of response to her music rather than the numbers!

Couldn't agree more with the past reviewer about Toni Childs musical journey. I have enjoyed her music from the first time I heard of her in the late 1980's. First rate soulful singer-belter with something to say and a great "world-beat" sound. A unique vocalists to say the least and highly under-rated! I especially love the 4 newer cuts from her last studio effort, "The Woman's Boat" from 1994.

Beautiful, primal, both the physical woman and the spirit that pours out of her. She is cosmic here with only brief stumbles on a dusty country road...I would be happy to do so well. The only gods I believe in nowadays are the ones that can dance...T.C. supplies the voice. She can add a dollop of infinity to house cleaning, red tailed wings to driving in empty country...buy it.

Childs draws the listener along with her powerful voice. The lulls one into powerful rhythms and themes that will haunt you with "sticky" lyrics and refrains that draw you again and again to listen to the album.

This is serious and beautiful music from a singer/songwriter that may potentially enrich your life which is why we listen to music...isn't it?

The CD I reach for. Her Zimbabwe is, simply put, magical. The entire CD is an experience for all real lovers of great lyrics. This CD will take you from preparing your meal with a loved one, to enjoying the food, to raising a glass of fine wine, to clearing the table, to holding hands on the sofa, to embracing at the end of a long day. It's the CD for insightful people in or out of love. Enjoy.

the album was everything i'd expect from Toni Childs. i'm very pleased with it and listen to it all the time.

"Ultimate Collection" is a great collection. Excellent melodies and intelligent lyrics from an underrated performer. The only rub: "Hush" from the Union LP is a glaring omission.
