Vaughn Monroe - The Ultimate Collection (I don't think so),
By

A huge disappointment -- this CD has all the right songs but, without exception, they are "B" cuts, not the popular version that I had expected. Worse, the sound quality was very very poor -- the Band Music was over-modulated and tinny -- I've heard better sound quality on a Victrola playing 78's. I had a Vaugn Monroe cassette that sounded out of this world and had hoped that this CD would be the same. Again, a HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!!

I thought that this CD wasn't bad. The sound quality on some of the tracks is terrible, but there were a lot of good songs on this CD. I think that's what an ultimate collection is- a mix of well-known and obscure songs. This CD does a good job of representing that. Sure, some tracks are missing, but so what? I like it anyway.

Wonderful voice - Just discovered Mr. Monroe last year, sorry it took me so long. His two western movies are great too!

The Sound Quality IS Dismal,

I must agree with the reviewers who point out the poor sound quality on most of the 25 tracks, although I have to disagree with the one who calls these "B-cuts" and not originals. They are the original recordings, all done from 1941 to 1949. They just weren't handled very well in transferring them to digital mode.
The insert contains some interesting liner notes written in 2001 by Tony Watts in London, and this is what earns it one of the two stars awarded. |
