Simply, Whitney,
By Michael Kerner "Michael Kerner" (Brooklyn, New York U.S.A.) - See all my reviews (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE)
This review is from: Ultimate Collection (Audio CD)
While the past several years, the hype has been about more of the bad girls like the sleezy Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears, we often really do forget about what has made our influences really shine, and that is just simply the voice. That is sadly the case as well with Whitney Houston. This past couple of years has been difficult for her, with the heartbreaking divorce of her ex-husband, Bobby Brown, and the tabloid fallout over her her personal problems, she is still coming back on solid ground, and her voice is still a knockout. But, in the U.S., there hasn't been a definitive hits album that has shown Whitney at her peaks. While the 2000 The Greatest Hits, had missed out on a lot of tracks, by choosing to make remixes come alive of most of her great songs, instead of the original editions, but the overseas version delivered better by not overdoing it on the remixes. Now, another chance has come around to bring this legendary voice back to a new era and the hearts of those who will still always love her.
The 2007 Whitney Houston: Ultimate Collection is a single disc retrospective of Whitney Houston at her best. The collection includes 18 of her great tracks that are definitely most of the best, but also does the trick mostly well, at re-introducing her sophisticated voice to a new generation. The collection includes her big #1 smashes including the definitive I Will Always Love You, One Moment In Time, her anthem for the 1988 Summer Olympics, as well as classics like Saving All My Love For You, The Greatest Love Of All, and and Exhale (Shoop Shoop) from Waiting To Exhale. The album also includes the overlooked When You Believe, her Oscar-winning duet with Mariah Carey from The Prince Of Egypt, which was overshadowed from her previous hits album. Surprisingly, there were a few great tracks that were sadly overlooked on this album including her breakout hit You Give Good Love, Heartbreak Hotel, I Believe In You & Me and Step By Step from The Preacher's Wife, All The Man That I Need, and One Of Those Days from her last album, Just Whitney. Although Whitney Houston: The Ultimate Collection did overlook a few great songs, it stayed true and relevant at delivering a simple greatest hits album than the 2000 one, by trimming the dance beats, and staying true to just the simplicity of Whitney Houston's voice. While more of the hype right now is on acts like Britney Spears and her so-called comeback Blackout, Beyonce' and Jennifer Lopez, Whitney Houston's songs stand strong with the testiments of time, and this hits album does basically show that well. Track Listing: 1) I Will Always Love You 2) Saving All My Love For You 3) Greatest Love Of All 4) I Wanna Dance With Somebody 5) One Moment In Time 6) How Will I Know 7) So Emotional 8) When You Believe 9) Where Do Broken Hearts Go 10) I'm Your Baby Tonight 11) Didn't We Almost Have It All 12) Run To You 13) Exhale (Shoop Shoop) 14) If I Told You That 15) I Have Nothing 16) I'm Every Woman 17) Its Not Right, But Its Okay 18) My Love Is Your Love Album Cover: B+ Songs: B- Price: B Remastering: A- Overall: B 1/2-

"How Will I Know" Remastered!!!! Enough reason to buy this CD.,

The ONLY reason I bought this CD, as I already have ALL of Whitney Houston's better albums on CD, was for the remastering of "How Will I Know", the GREATEST POP SONG............EVER!!!!! However, after giving the full CD a listen, I was more than happy to have the entire CD. All of her great songs from back in the 80's and early 90's are included here and, there are no stupid remixes that take away from the song itself. The only exception to that rule is "I'm Your Baby Tonight" which, I believe, is a bit different from the original. Trust me, you won't be disappointed with the newer mix, it's EXCELLENT, much better than the original version. So, if you're like many people who have her Double-Disc Greatest Hits CD that included the AWFUL remixes which RUINED the songs, pick this up. The songs are crisp, clear, and filled with the energy and that amazing voice which has made Whitney Houston one of the greatest singers of ALL TIME.

Finally!!,
By Music "Musicluver31" (Lafayette, Louisiana) - See all my reviews

Finally! Whitney Houston decides to release an Ulitmate Collection of her greatest hit songs. I know she released her Greatest Hits package back in 2000, but we all know that was tragic. With all the remixes of her great songs. Now with this collection, it has all the original songs and all are remastered. Who can ever forget this woman, with her amazing voice. I've been there with her from the start with 1985's "You Give Good Love". Now the last 2 albums she has released "Just Whitney" and "One Wish", were not up to her standards. I am glad she did not include any tracks from those albums on this collection. The only flaw I have to this album is that it is missing a few Ultimate Hits, like "You Give Good Love" #3 hit,"All The Man I Need" #1 hit,"Miracle" #9 hit,"Heartbreak Hotel" #2 hit,"Love Will Save The Day" #9 hit,"My Name Is Not Susan" #20 hit,"I Believe In You & Me" #4 hit,"Step By Step" #15 hit,and "Count On Me" #8 hit. Besides those songs missing, this is an Ultimate collection by the one and only Whitney Houston. I recommend this album to you!

Diva...NO Crack Addict...YES,
This review is from: Ultimate Collection (Audio CD)
Wish everyone would stop the Diva nonsence. Whitney in her day was a talented singer with a strong voice. This is a good representation of the good Whitney, and worthy of many listens. Todays Whitney is a has been. A product of her own destructive behavior. So, buy this disc, then shake your head and say goodbye to what was, a talented gal. Her voice today sux, due to her drug use. Serves her right.

YOU HAVE IT ALL, WHITNEY !!!,

Whitney Houston's voice mesmerized me when I was much younger back in the mid-eighties; and she continues to blow me away with her talent for singing far, far better than the run-of-the-mill songbird. Sure, her vocal range has changed over the years but the energy in her voice has never faded; it remains as sparkling today as it ever did and every tune on this album proves it! The quality of the sound on this CD is excellent; and I love that artwork, too.
The track set starts with a fantastic ballad from "The Bodyguard" written by Dolly Parton, "I Will Always Love You." Whitney aces this as effortlessly as if it were mere breathing; but of course we know it really wasn't all that simple--Whitney's talent carries her through. I love it! "Saving All My Love for You" was the very first Whitney Houston tune I ever heard; Whitney sounds terrific and the music that plays fits in perfectly with Whitney's vocals. In addition, a particular favorite of mine, one that always touches me deeply, is "The Greatest Love of All." "The Greatest Love of All" charms me now as it did then with its natural beauty; and Whitney does this better than just about any other singer ever could. "One Moment in Time" is very well done indeed; and there's yet another gem in "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)." "I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)" has enough energy to light up an entire city and Whitney belts this out like the pro she is! "How Will I Know" uses great percussion as Whitney sings this to perfection; and "So Emotional" works as well today as it did when it Whitney first released it. Awesome! "I'm Your Baby Tonight" has a very spirited arrangement; and "Didn't We Almost Have It All" features Whitney's full vocal range. She never skips a beat, either! "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" is another fine tune that leaves nothing to be desired--this music is all THAT good. "If I Told You That" has some mighty fine key and tempo changes that Whitney handles faultlessly; and "I Have Nothing" is yet another powerful ballad in Whitney's capable hands. "I'm Every Woman" shines brighter than silver and gold combined and the CD ends well with Whitney Houston performing "My Love Is Your Love." Whitney Houston has brought happiness to millions of people worldwide with her exceptional talent for singing and more; this is a must-have for her fans. It also makes a fine starter CD for people just getting into Whitney Houston. Sure, it may leave out a song or two that you may have wanted; but, then again, since when is any one Whitney Houston CD enough to be a full sized compilation of everything she's done so well? Thank you, Whitney!

A Flawed, But Wonderful Collection From Ms. Houston,

Despite issues with her private life, Whitney Houston has always have a place in my heart, having grown up with a mother who bought her music & still enjoying listening to her over the wannabe divas of today.
Currently unavailable in North America (mine's an import from Argentina) this is a great alternative to the 2-disc greatest hits collection of yesteryear despite missing a couple of my favorite songs ("You Give Good Love", "All The Man That I Need", & "Love Will Save the Day") which has more to do with space limitations (the disc clocks in at over 79 ½ minutes) then track selection, thought I'll gladly trade tracks 4, 8, & 18 to have those 3 in here. Also, there's no remixes, (although I'm Your Baby Tonight is a different version from the one most of us have heard.) & I'm happy about that. But unlike most reviewers, I happen to enjoy dance music & the remixes on the throw down disc are all very good but they should have just release it as a totally separate collection all together. That said, this is a wonderful greatest hits collection. Hopefully, Houston's upcoming album I Look to You will be a throwback to what made her a superstar & a true R&B diva.
