Editorial Reviews

Review

The Ultimate Guide was created to move any competency assessment program beyond meeting regulations and standards to creating excellence. Wright, a consultant for Creative Health Care Management, believes we assess competency to assure that we are giving the best possible care to our patients, residents and others not for the sake of outside regulatory bodies like JCAHO, OSHA, or other state and federal agencies.

A competency assessment, according to Wright, should assess whether or not a staff member can carry out current organizational goals and objectives. An effective assessment should evaluate critical thinking and interpersonal skills, not just technical expertise.

This is a guide packed with ready-to-use tools designed to help you develop, implement, and evaluate competencies compliant with JCAHO standards. It s a must read for managers seeking to achieve excellent outcomes in patient care and discover a new approach to competency assessment one that is outcome focused and accountability based. --NurseWeek California, April 10, 2006

Donna Wright delivers an easy-to-read, well developed book on creating and implementing Human Resource Competencies in Health Care. Filled with helpful examples, the book well covers the second and third order effects of various choices. I most strongly recommend this for Senior Nurse Executives, staff development, Clinical Nurse Specialists, and staff educators.

This is the best book I have found on competency assessment of health care workers. There are many ways to verify competency, and this book identifies which are appropriate for various identified competencies for licensed and unlicensed personnel.

I am so glad that I found this resource as we are now evaluating our current competency standards. This book speaks from a managerial perspective, but has relevant material for the educator or nurse specialist that may be assisting in the program planning. The book discusses the need for individual and management accountability and methods that best suit the adult learner. It also includes the PBDS domains that we are now trying to implement and make jive into our current culture and practice. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Donna Wright knows her stuff! If you're a healthcare organization implementing a competency program for your staff, Donna Wright is the "go to" authority on the topic. We (a healthcare HR software company) feel so strongly that Donna's guidance is the way to go when implementing any kind of competency management program that we've started sending a copy of this book to each client who purchases our competency management application.

Fun to read (yes, I said "fun"), and easy to understand, Donna takes the complicated world of healthcare competencies and makes it look simple. This book, and the advice herein, can save organizations literally THOUSANDS of hours of education time if they'll follow her recommendations, and the best part about it is that the Joint Commission also respects Donna's work tremendously, so you gain points with them any time an unscheduled audit occurs.

If you're doing competency management in your hospital and you've not read Donna's book, then you're truly doing it wrong!

Excellent resource. Read it, you will find much to apply to your practice. If you are a novice it is great to get you going. If you are an old-head this is an excellent resource. I found it well worth the time and money. I have taken many of the suggestions and now apply them.
