This review is from: Ultimate Country Play-Along Guitar Trax (Ultimate Play-Along Series) (Paperback)
This book is for advanced players who are well versed in country music. The solos are played fast. There are nuances in many of the tracks that are difficult to pick up in the notation/tab. If you can slow down the CD down by at least 50% and really wood shed the material, you may get positive results. I started playing the guitar in 1971 and earned a degree in music in 1977. Even though I have years of experience playing jazz/fusion and rock this book was very challenging. If you can read music, have mastered the fretboard and have the country chops to handle the demonstration solos, this may be a good investment. Average players and experienced players looking to cross over into country music should look elsewhere.

Some awesome guitarists,

This review is from: Ultimate Country Play-Along Guitar Trax (Ultimate Play-Along Series) (Paperback)
This is a quality, well-done play-along book with some of the best country guitarists there are. It has solos by Albert Lee, Jerry Donahue, Steve Travato and others. Another great quality this book has is the wide range of styles it features. It has everything from fast playing to myriads of bends to slide guitar.Sometimes I just listen to the CD...the stuff is that good. It has enough material to keep you busy for years. I don't know if I would recommend it for beginners, much of the stuff is pretty advanced...but don't let that stop you.

This review is from: Ultimate Country Play-Along Guitar Trax (Ultimate Play-Along Series) (Paperback)
This book offers 11 solos by virtuoso country guitarists with widely different styles, and is a joy to listen to them play. Each solo has unique ideas to gain knowledge from, and each track has several minutes of rythym section behind it to either jam away or to practice playing the transcribed solos by the pros, several times through if you desire to. If you are a beginner this will at the minimum give you some inspiration, but you can also practice the rythym parts as well, and this book has some good diagrams and notes about each solo which will be helpful to all skill levels. While not specifically a country guitarist myself, the guitar playing on here is extremely appealing to me, and whether your style is jazz or rock or classical or punk or anything, this book and cd combo can add a touch of flare to your playing if you put in some time and energy. I would recommend this book to anyone that can read music fairly well, and has a good ear since there is a lot more to the music than just appears on the page--often times the notes on the paper serve as a guide to getting the licks down, but your ear will have to fill in the blanks. The authors did a great job with song selection as well, and the backing musicians lay down some great grooves. This is the kind of book that can take your playing to a higher and more exciting level, and is rare in that regard, so I am very happy with the purchase of it. |
