Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The words “bible” and “reference” are not synonymous with “boring.” Crowfoot proves that as she promotes the art of crochet on every page of her excellent guide, beginning with an overview of the craft’s origins and its requirements and necessities (for instance, hooks, needles, and knowledge of how to read a chart). Each chapter truly exposes the how-to details, not only in words but also, most important, in oversize illustrations. Included are a well-explained section of basics (for instance, how to differentiate between front and reverse sides and how to work crochet for left-handed crafters) and specific stitch categories: texture and lace, thread, Tunisian entrelac, color, beads and sequins, edgings, and professional finishing techniques. Shaded sidebars answer typical novice questions, from ideas for storing hooks to how to keep rounds flat. A comprehensive book that belongs on every crafts shelf. --Barbara Jacobs

This book is probably better for beginner and intermediate crafters. As an intermediate crocheter I refer to it often as it explains things (like increasing decreasing, where to grab the stitch) that I need to come back to. It is NOT a library of stitches for inspiration, but rather a reference on how to do things. And it does this very very well. What I like most about this book is its' large format and how easy it is to see the illustrations and understand the diagrams. The text is written in an easy to understand way so explanations are very clear. I would highly recommend this book to someone who needs things to be clearly presented and likes large images.

Disappointing January 8, 2011

When I hefted this weighty book out of the delivery carton I was anticipating a volume full of techniques and stitches I could use in my projects. What I got was a rehash of basic skills that weren't particularly well explained or well illustrated. While the author does cover tunisian (afghan stitch) broomstick and hairpin lace, there are other books that do it better. There are also other books that provide a wider selection of stitches.

This is certainly not what I would call the "ultimate" crochet book.

This one of the many books about knitting and crocheting that I got from the library and the only one of six books that I felt successfully explained and showed me what to do. So far I'm just practicing and making swatches, but I know that I can complete the stitches and projects in the book. I'm buying this book and would recommend it to anyone whose just starting out.
