I contribute my good reading skills to the material I was taught with when growing up. Dick and Jane coupled with phonics will stay with you forever in sounding out
words. As a just retired teacher I still think "old, tried and true" can't be beat.

My mother purchased this book for my 5 year old son, who has been struggling with reading. He recently picked this book up and has not put it down since. For the first time, I have seen him read with confidence and excitement. We both have enjoyed reading this book together. Having almost 400 pages, this book can last a very long time.

I bought this book bc my 5 y/o was struggling w/ phonics, so I wanted to try a different approach in teaching her to read. She has known all of her letter sounds for close to 2 yrs, but still struggles to put the sounds together into a word. My parents were taught to read in school w/ the Dick & Jane books, so I found a good deal on Amazon & decided to give it a try, even though I had been told there are "newer and better things out there that aren't as boring". She is doing so great w/ this book! She loves the stories and the pictures and is progressing very well. We still do regular phonics work throughout the week, but do this daily. The book itself is hardback and seems to be durable so far. It is a thick book so it will last us a while. I am very pleased w/ this purchase. Sometimes newer is not better; I love this classic.

I remember reading these books myself as a child. I ordered this compilation of stories for my 5-year-old grandson to help him with his reading in Kindergarten. He loves the book! He read the first 60 pages the first time he opened it. It is a timeless treasure and a great teaching aid.

When I opened this book for the first time, I was shocked at how familiar it was. It was as if I were a first-grader, sitting in a circle of chairs, seeing them for the first time. Absolutely amazing.

Now, the stories are sure nothing to write home about. They bored me when I was six years old, and they weren't any better five decades later. But the pictures, those amazing pictures!

They're realistic, but there's also a gauziness about them, a sort of ethereal quality, that makes them unforgettable. They're actually watercolor paintings, with a Norman Rockwell look and feel. I think that's what pleased me so much about the book. Seeing those amazing illustrations drew me back into my childhood.

I feel sorry for the little kids today, because their books just don't have such beautiful illustrations. But this book does, and I recommend it most highly.

I read this to my 4 year old grand daughter when I babysit and she loves it and has started recognizing the words. She is bilingual and the subject matter does not traumatize her at all. It is an aid to teach words. Nothing else.

I am a retired teacher, I purchased this book to work with my grandson who is 5. I had been working on sight words with him. When book arrived, he started reading, without assistance, right away. He is now hooked on reading. When he comes over the first activity he asks to do is to read from his book. He has even requested to take this book to school to read to his teacher and peers.

Will definitely look for the next level of Dick and Jane. Pictures in book have stimulated conversations of "What was it like when I went to school. All the skills being presented to teachers to use today can be used with this book. I can just imagine the sense of excitement when reading time came up, especially for beginning readers. The sooner they can begin reading stories the easier it is to hook children on reading!!!

I have struggled to find something to help my 6 year old homeschooled son to read. He is an extremely difficult child, with many symptoms of Asperger's, although no such formal diagnosis. We started the school year with Teaching Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons because of the great reviews it got. To put it mildly, it was not easy for us. Every day ended in screaming fits and tears, although he did pick up at least a few letter sounds before we had to put it aside. Then I tried the BOB books, which were so-so. He made some progress and picked up a few easy three-letter words, but the books were so short that I think he probably largely just had them memorized (he has an extraordinarily good memory). He also got very bored with the stories, so we just started working with homemade flashcards and recognizing words, then sentences, that I wrote on the whiteboard for him, things like that, with the occasional book I dug up at the library interspersed. I found this book a couple of weeks ago at the library and recalled the Dick and Jane stories of my childhood, so I picked it up to see how he would do with it. It has been really remarkable how well he has done with it. He started picking up on things so quickly in this book, and the repetition has really helped him. We have gotten only partway through the book so far, but he is reading it virtually flawlessly. I would recommend this for anyone who has tried the more modern methods, only to be disappointed.
