Product Description

Professional Runner Peter Bakwin was the catalyst for the design of the Ultimate Directions PB Adventure Vest. After years of creating his own packs, Peter teamed up with Ultimate Direction to create the high-capacity, bottles-up-front running pack he wanted. Like many runners, Peter found that water bottles were a much more elegant solution to hydration bladders, which tend to slosh around and make it hard to refill on-the-fly. As a result, the Adventure Vest touts a bottle holster on each shoulder strap, which locates your hydration where it's easy to grab and quick to refill. Behind these holsters lies a harness made of stronger-than-steel Cuben fiber (found in America's Cup yacht sails), and behind that, a stretchy storage compartment comprised of Power Mesh. Because of the direct integration of the eight-liter mesh compartment and the carrying harness, the PB has a seamless feeling that you'll swear is an extension of your own body. And thanks to the main compartment's unique one-piece pull cord, the compartment instantly expands or compresses so your load never wobbles. Bryce Thatcher founded Ultimate Direction and he began hand-sewing hydration packs in 1986. Since that time, Ultimate Direction's lineup has expanded dramatically and now includes signature pieces born of collaborations with professional athletes. Compared to other minimalist hydration systems like the AK Race Vest or the SJ Ultra Vest, the PB Adventure Vest offers the most expansive storage and safety features not offered by the other two signature series vests. Ultra runners will appreciate the versatility of the design, and that same versatility may attract ultralight hikers, climbers, and skiers to adopt this vest as well.

I am a 6'3" 175 lb slow distance runner. I needed to find an alternative hydration system to the hydration belt that I had been using for a couple of years. As I started to add mileage I needed to carry more nutrition and fluids and a hydration vest seemed to be the best solution.
This vest is very good. The quality of the materials is first rate. I have run about 100 miles in the vest and it looks as good as new (just doesn't smell as good). I like the bottle location as well as all of the stash pockets for the odds and ends it takes to have a comfortable long run. I have yet to fill the vest to capacity, it holds a tremendous amount of volume and the stretch of the materials make it snug and very stable.
I do have some issues with the vest. Not all of the pockets are within "easy" reach. I have to contort myself pretty drastically to get items out of the small side pockets, but I have been able to do so without removing the vest. Perhaps my biggest issue is the bottles rubbing on my bottom rib. The first couple of runs with the vest were 20 milers during good weather so I did not pack the bladder for fluids and carried no supplies in the back of the pack. When I got back from the first run I was pretty disappointed in the vest, but I thought that I should give it another chance. During the second run again the bottles bounced just enough to rub/irritate my lowest ribs. At this point I was ready to return the vest, but I had another long run scheduled soon after and really had no better hydration source. The morning of this long run called for rain, I had to pack a rain jacket. I also decided to try the hydration bladder in the back as well. The vest was vastly improved by carrying a load. Everything seemed to fit better and there was no bounce at all.

The Ultimate Direction PB Adventure Vest is, BY FAR, the best vest/hyrdation system on the market. Extremely light, very durable, with lots of pockets that fits everything from 500ml bottles, gels, id's, money, smartphone, GPS trackers, polls, ice pickers, two compartments for dry and wet apparel. It also comes with an attached emergency whistle.

You can use this vest just for the bottles (it holds at least 4 500ml bottles - 2 already comes with the vest, which are excellent I might add). Just have to pull the cords and make the vest compact. It doesn't bounce around nor it frictions on the shoulder or waist.

I also tried using it fully packed with id, money, smartphone, keys, 4 500ml bottles, 6 energy gels, an extra bottle with a recovery mixture, a spare shirt and shorts, some food. With all that stuff I ran for 4 hours and it did not feel that I was wearing a vest.

Buy this and you'll ask yourself why you took so long to finish your order.

Love everything about it... rides/fits well, has surprising little pockets all over, has a waterproof/resistant compartment, holds much more than anticipated (bivy, headlamp, extra jacket, med kit, inhaler, snacks, camera, gloves, etc).

Purchased the newer version of this vest, in blue color. Love this vest. I use it for trail runs in the local mountains near Los Angeles. So far, I’ve done three long hike/runs with this (recently 6 hours on Pacific Crest Trail in Wrightwood, also, climbing Mt. Wilson, and climbing to Mt. Baldy via Bear Flats) and it was a perfect, as it held my 60 oz Platypus bladder, sandwich, some frozen grapes, orange slices, and trail bar. Plus, chapstick, sunscreen, bugspray, tissues, my cell phone. With room for more. I love that it has a lot of pockets. The two front pockets has two bottles that I’ve used one for coconut water. The other bottle I leave out, as I haven’t needed it yet. It’s so comfortable to wear. I know other trail runners who own this and they love it as well. I like it better than my previous backpack, which was a smaller Nathan. People notice it, and twice I’ve been complimented and asked how I like it. I plan on using it on many more trail runs and hikes in the future.

Works well for carrying a 100oz bladder (recommended 70oz) and a couple insulated 24oz bottles in the pack, with emergency supplies in the other compartment, plenty of snack room in the bellows pockets and love the easy reach bottle shoulder mounts. There have been a couple of minor manufacturing/quality issues with the zipper pulls and bungees coming unglued during normal use - which required me to replace or tie the bungee to the shoulder straps. I like it, it carries and runs well, still working out a good pole mounting solution for the tops of the poles.

This is the ultimate vest as is in the title and is all the company boosts it is but... It runs small. I am just slightly overweight and I could not wear the small. The small fit well in length so I returned the small and purchased the med/large. Too bad for me that the med/large was too long but if you can get a good fit the product is fantastic!!!!!
