4.0 out of 5 stars Classic FPS, and still holds up by today's standards. January 27, 2014

This game is a damn classic, and nothing can take away that. Add highpoly 3D models, dramatic music, less demons, more russians, and you've got a modern-day FPS. This game is simply a masterpiece. What really does make it so good is how timeless it is; how well it's aged.

4.0 out of 5 stars A classic that has aged surprisingly well December 27, 2014

I'm really surprised by just how much I had fun with this game. I expected to like it but I didn't think I would enjoy it nearly as much as I did. After all, I'm a fan of FPS games like Half-Life, Bioshock, System Shock 2, and Deus Ex. I'm used to FPS's that have interesting stories, well-developed characters, varied and immersive gameplay. Doom consists of running around shooting monsters while looking for colored key-cards that will open doors to areas with more monsters to shoot and colored key-cards to find. It's not very complicated, yet I had so much fun.

Developed by id Software, Doom is a first-person shooter released in 1993. The protagonist is a space-marine (commonly referred to as "Doomguy") stationed on Mars where experiments with teleportation technology are taking place. However during these experiments a portal to Hell is accidentally opened. Now the only survivor, Doomguy must fight his way through demons and reach safety. As you can probably tell, the plot is not actually important and is merely there to explain why you are shooting monsters and jumping through teleporters. The real reason you want to play Doom is for the gameplay.

Following in the footsteps of Wolfenstein 3D, Doom popularized the FPS genre and made it the success it is today (for better or for worse). The gameplay simply consists of the player running around maze-like levels looking for colored key-cards while shooting everything in their path. It may not be as complicated as today's shooters, but I think that is what makes it fun. There is no leveling system, no vehicle sections, no moral decisions, you just run around and shoot stuff. Part of what makes this fun is weapons you use. There is a pistol, a chaingun, an RPG, a chainsaw, a plasma rifle, and the incredibly powerful BFG 9000.

5.0 out of 5 stars A classic that never gets old. October 16, 2014

This is really just an online redemption for the steam version of ultimate doom. It's well worth it as its easy to use steam and download your game. And all mods that I've tried will work with the steam version.
