2.0 out of 5 stars CAREFUL - DANGEROUS INFO
Another book by the same writer "The essential Dog Book" has under "Feeding Requirements" the following statement. "Very nearly every dog loves chocolate". While true it doesn't go on to say that chocolate is DANGEROUS for dogs. I just called my vet and confirmed it. NEVER feed chocolate to your dog or cat no matter how much they like it...

This is a very friendly book. It is bound very nicely and has an attractive cover with bright illustrations. It is large and would serve well as a "coffee table" book. The reading is easy and provides just enough information on each breed.

The first section of the book is alive with pictures of various dogs and instructions from puppy care on through the life of a dog. It is well suited for a beginning dog owner due to its thoroughness and explanations of care. It is also a good selection to help you determine which breed is right for you.

In contrast to other dog books we have seen, this one offers several photographs of most breeds. This is important. That cute puppy may grow to be one ugly dog.

Overall, this is a very nice book that has proven itself to be informative and entertaining. Most of all, our kids love it!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Dog Encyclopedia, April 17, 2003
A Kid's Review
This is a great book! There are great pictures of each breed, and a good amount of information, including size, grooming, exercise, etc. There are all kinds of breeds, including rare ones, and plenty info on dog care. The authors could have included more info on each breed though, and some of the pictures for each breed are sideways, so you have no idea what the face of the dog looks like. On one breed, they give you false information. The Eskimo Dog (according to the book) is a different name for the American Eskimo Dog. The book says the Eskie is a large dog weighing 59-104 lbs. and standing 20-27 in at the withers, and it can be any known dog color. The Eskie is actually a small dog that comes in white or biscuit cream only and in three sizes (toy, mini, standard) 9-19 in at the withers and 6-40 lbs. That is the only mistake I have seen in the book, though. Overall, this book is very informative and definetly worth the cost!

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Must Have" for dog lovers!, October 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
A great book to have for anyone who loves dogs. It is a very informative book on all the different breeds and their traits, habits, and needs. This book even informs the reader of the type of demeanor each breed is genetically carrying. Facts regarding the care each individual breed needs for a healthy and happy life such as nutrition, grooming, and excersise are extreemly informative. A fantastic book for the Pro and Novice alike.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Dogs 2004, January 10, 2005

We enjoyed your book and found it had excellent graphics, however there were a few concerns. On pg 83, it states when suffering from heat exhaustion to "bath the dog with cold water and especially drench its head" if one were to do this it would send the animal into an immediate state of cardiac arrest in shock, a condition that no owner is equiped to deal with. I think that any veterinarian would agree, the best course of action would be to slowly cool the animal with tepid water and seek immediate emergency help. As well there is a section stating how much dogs like to eat chocolate but there is no mention to the fact of it being extremely toxic. On the plus side it is nice to see that you recommended that any injured dog should be muzzled as it may bite (something that the owner may not know).

While true it doesn't go on to say that chocolate is DANGEROUS for dogs. I just called my vet and confirmed it. NEVER feed chocolate to your dog or cat no matter how much they like it. I cannot recomend any book by a writer that has such a dangerous error in it. It makes me wonder how well they researched and checked the rest of it. I don't know if this book also has this error in it.

2.0 out of 5 stars disjointed and incomplete, August 10, 2005

I found the section on breeds to be informative with nice pictures. The section on care and illness was severely lacking: on one page, the text just ended with no punctuation and did not continue to the next page. To find out how to take a dog's temperature was very clear, but I had to search the index to find out what that temp should be. There were instances that in case of an illness or infection, no real guides as to what the owner could do until the dog could see a vet. Just not very helpful to me at all.

3.0 out of 5 stars A good dog book, November 25, 2003
By
I got this book last weekend. I can't say I have read it cover to cover, but I have taken a good look at it.

I like it!! ...I wont say the information inside it is very precise, especially concerning breed temperament, but the pictures are wonderful and give an excellent idea of what the dog will look like in real life.

It is not a heavy book, and the language is very easy to read, so I also think its a good option for kids who are beyond the picture books and want a bit more information... without over saturating them!!

2.0 out of 5 stars not much information for the money, April 22, 2006
This review is from: The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Dogs, Dog Breeds and Dog Care (Hardcover)
I thought that this was an Encyclopedia but it was more just general information that anyone that has seen the dog would know, a big waste of money
