4.0 out of 5 stars Very intriguing and scary as hell
I am from Westchester County, NY where David Berkowitz was captured, so I grew up with a lot of the Son of Sam stories from my parents who were young adults back in '77. I am also aware of the weird occult gatherings that took place in Untermeyer Park in Yonkers,NY. That stuff is fact according to Yonkers P.D. In 1987 my mom read the original hardcover ed. of "Ultimate"...

3.0 out of 5 stars Great research on the past . . . but what about the present?
Maury Terry has obviously spent a great deal of time researching the David Berkowitz of the 70s, in his book, The Ultimate Evil. I've yet to find a book about the David Berkowitz of today. The best read I've found is in David's online journal, at www.forgivenforlife.com.

In 1987 my mom read the original hardcover ed. of "Ultimate" while tending bar in Yonkers, and when some of her local regulars learned she was reading it, they told her that there was a lot of weird cult stuff going on up at Untermeyer. Very chilling book, and although I agree with its critics about it being filled with too many "anonymous sources" and no index, which makes Terry's claims outlandish, there is still a lot of evidence that suggests the SOS murders where orchestrated by a larger group. Even the victems' families don't believe in the lone-killer story! I will admit that the whole coast to coast Manson Family/.44/Radin/Perry connection sounds very sensational. Why hasn't Terry interviewed Bill Mentzer (MansonII)? It's not that I don't believe it, but it comes across more as theory than fact. However, between the varying .44 caliber shooter sketches and the case being re-opened in Queens (still open in Yonkers) I am convinced of one thing, Berkowitz did not act alone.

5.0 out of 5 stars North Dakota COnnection, May 19, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Ultimate Evil, the (Hardcover)
We lived in Bismarck, ND at that time and I remember the "goings on" with the cult activities. The cult frequented a park a couple miles from our house where young people gathered at night. My children saw them across the street at the top of the hill in a ritutal around a bonfire. They were scared and came running home. I remember the dead dogs and cattle with no blood in them but otherwise the bodies were healthy. The place they met south of town and close to a Univerity (more young people). You saw them walking with red vests with their Priestly garb and upside down crosses. We also know the young lady killed in Stanford University chapel and her husband (now a Dr in Child Paycology). Maurey covered it well and I can not imagine all the time and energy he has put into the update. Wonderful!! A must read!!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book blew my mind, April 25, 2008
This review is from: Ultimate Evil, the (Hardcover)
This book really blew my mind on many different levels. The ties to Manson are fascinating and really make sense. The main thing that really blew my mind though was that the police were so eager to make an arrest that they just pinned everything on Berkowitz, even though the facts did not add up whatsoever. I highly recommend this book to any true crime reader.

5.0 out of 5 stars BEST TRUE CRIME NOVEL EVER!!, January 13, 2006

This review is from: Ultimate Evil, the (Hardcover)
If people knew the truth about the Son Of Sam killings most would probably refuse to believe. This book is eye-opening and truly terrifying. The police just wanted this case to go away and the amount of evidence they ignored is staggering. I was a kid in The Bronx at the time and I remember how scared my parents were. We couldn't even play outside. The first victim, Donna Lauria, was killed in The Bronx, but not until I read this book did I know she was killed 2 blocks from my house. READ THIS BOOK!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Part of the puzzle, August 12, 2011
By
This review is from: Ultimate Evil, the (Hardcover)
This book was enlightening but really didn't take you all the way there. If you want to see the big picture read the following books in addition to The Ultimate Evil. These books will bring you from beginning to the end result.

Fritz Springmeiers "Thirteen Bloodlines of the Illuminati"
Kathleen Sullivan "Unshackled"
David McGowan "Programmed to Kill"
David McGowan "Laurel Canyon" (online, not published yet).

Also Doc Marquis (High ranking Masonic Warlock who defected from Occult) stated on an episode of Oprah that Tate was indoctrinated into a High Profile Coven based out of Britain. She wanted out and that is why the hit was contracted. I think Dave McGowan talks about the murder scene and the symbolism that was left behind as a calling card.

5.0 out of 5 stars I felt as if I were part of the investigation with Terry, April 3, 2005
This review is from: Ultimate Evil, the (Hardcover)
I could not put this book down. From the first chapter until the close of the book I was entranced. Terry's research and close attention to detail allowed me to feel as if I was part of the investigation team. Facts were pointed out clearly, and backed up by various sources. One fact, that a member of the Son of Sam cult was found with the hard cover of the Ultimate Evil and made notations of his own, was fascinating to me. This book changed my opinion of the "lone .44 killer" in a matter of chapters. The information from Berkowitz and the protected sources, as well as law enforcement agencies has been used to expose a ring of cults that has run unchecked for too long. I wonder what Terry would have to say about the BTK killer and the other "lone psychos". Perhapse another chronicle would be fitting.

5.0 out of 5 stars An well researched book!, November 24, 2004
This review is from: Ultimate Evil, the (Hardcover)
This is an excellent example of journalistic investigation. It is a real horror story and will keep you up nights. Growing up around Minot, ND at the time of the "Son of Sam" killings and remembering the death of John Carr at the Minot AFB makes this more personal for me. I highly recommend this to any one interested in sociology or true crime books. The ramifications of this book could be explosive!

This book is powerful. Delves into just how evil the human mind can sink. Manson, Son of Sam, The Process Church. Dark forces are at play in controlling the minds of misfits and delinquents. Maury Terry has written a real eye-opener into the world of Satanic criminal behavior.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Evil, December 17, 2007
By
This review is from: Ultimate Evil, the (Hardcover)
I read this book several years ago. The first thing I must say is that "facts" as depicted, if this book is by any means true, should get support from specific, traceable external documentation and copious notes. Though it does make a few references to New York Times articles from the 1980s (which I admit I have not verified), those are all Terry uses to directly substantiate his claims. A book of this scope having not so much as an index leaves too much for this critically thinking mind to question. TUE is a fantastic read, but that alone offers no credibility. Detectives who investigated the Son of Sam case have debunked any grand link between Berkowitz and alleged occult affiliations, but of course, I hear people saying, "The cops want to prevent panic!" Is Terry's account true? I do not know. I am, however, very skeptical.
