UFC Ultimate Ultimate,
By
This review is from: Ultimate Fighting Championship - The Ultimate Ultimate [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The UU was the first time that the UFC really brought out some big guns and had 4 previous champions: Dan "The Beast" Severn UFC 5, Oleg Taktarov UFC 6, Marco Ruas UFC 7 and Steve Jennum UFC 3, take on some of the best competition that has never won the gold in, Tank Abbott, Paul Varelans, Dave Beneteau and replacing Pat Smith due to injury, Keith Hackney who had 2 memorable fights with Emmanuel Yarbrough and Royce Gracie. The UU however was missing 2 big names in Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie. This was also the first time that score card judges would be used (and which Ruas argued against in a decision). This one also had a little bit of both kind of UFC action such as the bare knuckle striking and of course the ground techniques and submissions that have won it in the past. The first round is really good. The matches are extremely fast paced (even for a few grappling matches) and it was very technical as well. However after that, some of the matches really dragged on in the semis and final. Granted yes you have to expect that from grappling matches but even after referee Big John McCarthy would stand up the fighters, it went back to the ground right away. I'd still check out this one, it's still pretty good. Again, aside from Hackney and Abbott, this is mostly a night for the grapplers. Also check out Ultimate Ultimate 2 because that one is a lot faster and also check out UFC 2, 3 and 6.

A Very Good Show of Technique and Skill,
By J Gray "Jeremy" (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ultimate Fighting Championship: Ultimate 2 [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I know a lot of people consider the UFC all about blood and violence. Well, this event proves that to win you need technique. This show had some great fighters, including Dan Severn, David "Tank" Abbott, Oleg Taktarov, Marco Ruas, Dave Beneteau, Paul Varelans, and Keith Hackney, all proven warriors in The Octagon( Steve Jennum is not a proven warrior). This event is really the UFC at its finest. It really makes you miss the old days of UFC. Now, if you want to see all out brawls, I suggeast UFC 1, UFC 2, OR UFC 6. Any UFC fan owes it to themselves to own this piece of UFC history.

Tourney of Chapions, what a treat!,

The Ultimate Ultimate was a rare, but very anticipated event. It was rare because todays fighters fight for more money, and to pay for their appearances in an event like this would put the UFC out of business. Still the UU (for short), was awesome to watch. Four past UFC tourney champs,(Jennum, Severn,Taktarov, and Ruas) vs. three proven contenders(Abbott, Varelans, Beneteau, and Hackney). The first round saw quicker than expected results, while the second round saw marathon matches. This was the first UFC with judges, something Marco Ruas would object to. In the final, a rematch of a fight that was stopped due to a cut. There was a lot of blood, but again the judges would decide the outcome. A key name, Royce Gracie, was absent from this show. With the time-limits and judges, he really had no choice but to watch. A great show, but some lackluster fights towards the end.
