Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

The signature DK style of busy pages full of carefully captioned illustrations works perfectly in this guide to freshwater fishing. After the fascinating introduction called "How Fish Live," Bailey gets right to the heart of the matter: catching fish. Lengthy chapters are devoted to how to catch predatory fish, game fish, and bait-caught fish, with a wealth of detail on technique and strategy for each. Stunning four-color illustrations of all the fish leap off the well-designed pages, and species profiles provide necessary detail. A useful chapter on equipment and accessories concludes this fine overview. Advanced anglers may find some of Bailey's advice a bit elementary, but even so, they will be engaged by the illustrations and the natural history. Clearly a first choice for most outdoors collections. Leon Wagner

4.0 out of 5 stars A Nice Book for a Budding Fisher-person, December 20, 2006
This review is from: Ultimate Freshwater Fishing (Hardcover)
I think this book would optimally be given as a present to someone 10 to 12 years old, who has a love of nature and a budding interest in angling. The book is probably fine for younger readers also, and I read it as an adult. The book primarily covers angling for various types of fish. For an adult, this book would be too light on technical information. I think its strengths are in a rich array of color pictures and how it mixes in general information about different fish. I think this book would probably do a good job of capturing a young person's interest by educating them about angling and fish without overwhelming them with technical fishing information. To give an example, the book spends quite a lot of time covering fish which are angled for in other parts of the world. This is not information that is particularly useful for anglers but is interesting and will help to keep the reader's interest.
