Not as good as 1 and 2,
By Brown Rage (California, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ultimate Galactus Vol. 3: Extinction (v. 3) (Paperback)
If you liked the cinematic artwork of volume 1 and the characterizations in volumes 1 and 2, you may be a little disappointed in volume 3, as I was. The artwork is more stylized here (no different than ordinary Marvel comics), which was a bit of a let-down. I prefer Bryan Hitch-style realism in my Ultimate books. But even worse (IMO), the artist seems to have gone overboard on the Photoshop half toning, creating a texture that I found distracting and that seemed to overpower both the line art and the color. The writing was ok but it felt as if the characterization established in volumes 1 and 2 suffered a bit in their rush to conclude the story. Cap had almost nothing to do here, which they dealt with in a conversation about God that felt a bit forced. Xavier's affect on Galactus was well-done, as was Reed's anguish over what he had to do. And of course, the foreshadowing in volume 2 about the secret of Galactus that changes anyone who hears it couldn't possibly live up to that kind of setup (and doesn't), so prepare to be underwhelmed by that. Ultimate Silver Surfer was interesting, although I'm not sure I like what they replaced the surfboard with. It looked a bit too cumbersome and non-functional. The book is worth having if only to find out how it ends (well, it doesn't quite "end," since it leaves a big opening for more in the future) and to complete your collection, if you're into that.

The mixed reactions for the conclusion of Warren Ellis' Ultimate Galactus trilogy are well deserved for the most part. Ultimate Extinction finds Nick Fury, Reed Richards, Sue Storm, the Ultimates, the X-Men, Falcon, and Captain Mahr Vell awaiting the end as the Gah Lak Tus makes it's way to Earth. Ellis' real strong point in this concluding TPB is the dialogue between all the characters, particularly Fury and Captain America. Another strong point of Ultimate Extinction is the Ultimate introduction of Misty Knight (yes, Misty Knight), and his re-invention of the Silver Surfer. Yes, it was an acquired taste for me too at first, but Ellis' interpretation is a creative way to introduce the classic Herald of Galactus. As by now you can guess that the TPB's real low point is the ending. For a force so powerful and hell bent on eliminating all of mankind, the Gah Lak Tus is defeated pretty easily (gee, hope I didn't ruin it for anybody) and pretty anti-climatic. Ellis' re-invention of the planet eater is refreshing though, offering up a more sensical and modern take on the all powerful devourerer of worlds. Brandon Peterson's artwork isn't anything spectacular, but it's pretty solid nevertheless. Yes, the Ultimate Galactus trilogy didn't live up to the promise delivered with Ultimate Nightmare, but Warren Ellis still manages to give us one of the best tales to come out of the Ultimate universe that isn't written by Mark Millar.

End of Ultimate Galactus,
By Zauriel (Tennessee) - See all my reviews

This volume was disappointing after the second volume. The art is still really well done. My major problem with this after all the build up the ending felt rushed and just left me going is that it. The pacing really slowed down though lots of useless parts in this. The ending to a story with a lot of potential that really let me down.

With Warren Ellis writing and Brandon Peterson doing the artwork, you would think this would be the perfect mini series. I did enjoy it, but it didn't leave me with a sense of awe. The very delayed Galactus trilogy finally comes to a close with Reed Richards working on an ultimate weapon to stop the Galactus threat, and Professor X working on a telepathic weapon to use. Meanwhile Captain America is left feeling powerless against this world eating foe. Ellis does a nice job with the dialog, though his unique take on Galactus and Silver Surfer may not please everyone. Peterson's artwork is a new style for him. I wasn't that pleased with the change and I hope he goes back to his old drawing ways. If you have read the first two, then of course finish it out. If you are a new reader, then start elsewhere. Plenty of time to get to this one after you have caught up with Spidey, X-Men and Fantastic 4.

absolutely awful...,

i really liked vols 1 and 2. there were some things that weren't great about them, specifically the x-men and avengers fighting each other for no reason in 1, and the robot hive galactus idea first showing up in 2.
but overall they were pretty good. unfortunately 3 is so awful it makes this whole trilogy not worth reading. the silver surfer are just some jacked up robot clones. there are some jacked up human clones who are trying to make sure that the big g event goes off without a hitch, yet one of them tries to kill one of the silver surfers?!? galactus as mentioned before is a stupid robot hive, easily bothered and easily shooed away for a world devouring cosmic force. the idea reed richards comes up with to scare of galactus is stupid (it looks promising at first but is a massive letdown), the ultimate nullifier of kirby/lee was 1000000x better. really i can't recommend this to any real comic fans. pick up the tpb of the coming of galactus, ff 48-50, instead. it might be done in the glossed over quick plot way of the 60s, but it's the greatest story in comics history and significantly better than this 'ultimate' attempt. i hope someone in hollywood reads this and realizes we all hate the robot hive galactus idea (rumored for fantastic four movies 2 and 3). remember how awful matrix 2 and 3 were? it might be difficult to make a good cgi big purple dude galactus, but anything is better than the robot hive galactus idea. it doesn't capture correctly the whole power cosmic idea, the classic comics galactus as a thinking cosmic super-being. a robot hive is just...a bunch of stupid tin can pests.

I must admit that after not reading superhero comics for over twenty years, I was pleasantly surprised by this title. I bought the first two books and ordered the third. With this Ultimates line, Marvel has managed to update and expand on some of their most popular characters in a mature way. They did this without making the story overly dark. The story reads like comic book adaption of a big budget Hollywood movie adaption of a comic book. Why didn't anyone think of this before. Great story. I think I'll have to keep up with this line of books.

I am not very familiar with the ultimate universe so i wasn't sure what to expect on this book.
The art is pretty good (especialy the covers) but the inking kinda annoys me, but i think that was an aesthetic choice. Now the story. Take in mind that this is the third and last volume of this short series and am reviewing the book itself. I was pretty dissapointed with the story. Mainly because since galactus is about to devour the earth i was expecting the book to have a "end of the world" feeling to it that i didn't really get till the last books. And i also thought that maybe they should have elaborated more on some intra personal conflicts that some characters are going through. Like captain america feeling useless. Another con about this book is that for the first 4 comics (its only five comics long) the story revolves around misty knight. a d list hero. Something that fans of the classic story might not like is that galactus is not a giant with a weird purple costume eating worlds. It actually an entity that devours planets. The story here shares some similarities with the second fantastic four movie. Overall a gave this a three because i was expecting more than what i got story wise. still its a pretty decent read. I would only recomend this book to people that are into the ultimate universse.

Ultimate Conclusion,

This review is from: Ultimate Galactus Vol. 3: Extinction (v. 3) (Paperback)
At long last, the Ultimate Galactus saga comes to a close with Ultimate Extinction. Coming on the heels of the events in Ultimate Galactus Vol. 1: Nightmare and Ultimate Galactus Vol. 2: Secret, Ultimate Extinction features the Ultimates, the Fantastic Four, and the X-Men working together to fend off the planet-killing force known as Gah Lak Tus. This is the colossal confrontation that the other chapters have been building towards.
Ultimate Extinction is split into different storylines. Reed Richards and Sue Storm are hard at work on a super-weapon to use against Gah Lak Tus, Professor X and Jean Grey prepare for an all-out psychic attack on the invading entity, Captain America deals with feelings of powerlessness in the face of so large an enemy, and in a seemingly unrelated story, detective Misty Knight uncovers a secret cult led by none other than the Ultimate version of the Silver Surfer. Meanwhile, SHIELD Director Nick Fury (without a doubt the best character in the Ultimate Universe) is holding everything together behind the scenes. Warren Ellis does, as usual, a fine job with the storytelling. It may not be the conclusion everyone expects, but it was handled quite well, and his dialogue alone is worth the price of admission. The Ultimate Captain Marvel and Falcon make a welcome return in this final volume. The introduction of these two characters may be the best thing to emerge from the whole Ultimate Galactus saga. Ellis's take on the Silver Surfer(s) may upset some fans, but I thought it was an interesting twist on the character that worked quite well. Misty Knight's addition to the story seemed a bit out of place, and the absence of Thor and the other half of the Fantastic Four was disappointing, but overall I was pleased with Ultimate Extinction. Brandon Peterson provided the artwork for Ultimate Extinction. I've been a fan of Peterson's artwork for years, but I've never seen him quite like this. His unique style was almost unrecognizable with all of the computerized finishing he used. Not that I'm complaining, seeing as how the results are visually stunning. It's just not the Brandon Peterson I'm used to. All told, Ultimate Extinction is a worthy conclusion to the Ultimate Galactus saga.

title says it all. There is a fun premise about just what Gal Lac Tus is that I like a lot, but the final ending seems a bit too trite.
