Today the Golden Retriever is still highly prized as a versatile gundog, retrieving game over land and water, and it has also excelled in other spheres of activity. It is widely used as a guide dog for the blind, and this cheerful, extrovert breed is ideally suited to working as an assistance dog for the disabled and as a hearing dog for the deaf. Quick to learn and eager to please, the Golden Retriever has also made its mark in the competitive sports of Field Trails, Working Trails, Agility, and Obedience. The Golden's handsome looks ensures its success in the show ring, but perhaps most important, the Golden Retriever is the perfect companion dog.
In The Ultimate Golden Retriever, 2nd Edition, Editor Valerie Foss has recruited a start-studded cast of specialists to write the definitive book on the breed. Experts from all over the world have pooled resources to give the most comprehensive coverage of the Golden Retriever today.
Starting with in-depth research into the origins and development of the breed, the experts go on to analyze the Breed Standard in detail. A unique feature of The Ultimate Golden Retriever is "The Judge's View," in which an American, British, and German judge make a pictorial critique of six different Golden Retrievers.
The Ultimate Golden Retriever, lavishly illustrated with more than 200 color photographs, is a must-have reference for the true Golden enthusiast.

Can't Get a Better Book About Goldens,
By "abbyraffles" (Cold Soil Farm) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Ultimate Golden Retriever, Second Edition (Hardcover)
This book is absolutely fabulous -- you can't get a better book about Goldens. For the beginner, it has all the information in there about how to housebreak him and when to take him to the vet, but it also has the Golden only type stuff, like how to teach puppies not to be afraid to swim. But it is really best for the expert, because there are so many photos of great Goldens and so many placed next to each other -- a British next to an American -- to show the differences in type. This is a really big book with tons of photos and easy to read and really tells you everytthing you need to know. It is interesting to see how the two coutnries diverged in their idea of what the structure should be. It was written by half British writers and half American and oh boy what that committee must have been like!

Good book for your home library,
By Dog Lover (PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Ultimate Golden Retriever, Second Edition (Hardcover)
It is a good book with great pictures. It would have been more useful had we been interested in preparing our dog for shows etc. but that wasnt our intention. We wanted a book with more information about training, food so on.

Retriever Book,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Ultimate Golden Retriever, Second Edition (Hardcover)
The book arrived promptly, but smelled very musty. It does contain good information about the breed and is recommended reading for anyone who owns or is thinking of being owned by a golden.
