Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

The amazing resurgence of the East Coast's premier saltwater game fish has sent hundreds of thousands of anglers in search of their fathers' and grandfathers' favorite quarry: the magnificent striped bass. But the best tools and techniques have changed since the striped bass was nearly wiped out, in the crash of the fishery in the early 1980s, and anyone who has a hope of catching this species must be familiar with its characteristics and habits.

In The Ultimate Guide to Striped Bass Fishing, noted angler and fishing author Eric Burnley has compiled everything anyone needs to know to be successful at catching this wonderful fish. Burnley begins by explaining the striper's biology  and its life cycle, its migratory patterns up and down the seacoast, the baitfish and other foods it prefers, and the underwater structures anglers must learn about to find the big fish, the ones breaking thirty or forty pounds. He then addresses, in exacting detail, every possible way the sport angler can catch stripers, including:

* Targeting and casting to structures from shore or boat
* Surfcasting methods, tips, and techniques
* Bait fishing with shrimp, sandworms, eels, clams, and baitfish from a boat
   or shore
* Trolling tackle, depths, direction, tide, and time of day
* Fly-fishing casts, retrieves, and special techniques

Burnley also tells where and when to fish, gives detailed instruction on appropriate tackle and must-know knots, and instructs on invaluable rigs and the conditions in which they are most successful. With comprehensive, easy-to-follow, step-by-step instructions, and dozens of clear illustrations, this book is the first place striped-bass anglers should look for advice that will reward them with great catches and great memories..

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Info, December 12, 2006

This review is from: The Ultimate Guide to Striped Bass Fishing: Where to Find Them, How to Catch Them (Hardcover)
This guy may be a jerk (as the previous reviewer seemed to think), but he sure seems to know his stuff. Not written as a scientific journal, it provides basic information about fishing for rockfish in language anyone can understand. It focuses on the Chesapeake Bay (where the author has lived and fished for decades). My only question is why he continually uses the phrase "striped bass" without ever mentioning that the fish is more commonly known in Maryland as "rockfish." (Probably something his editors made him do.) Oh, and as for author's alleged cursing (just so you'll know, there isn't any in the book), I think he would probably get along well with the fisherman for whom I am purchasing this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Know your Game", January 18, 2008
This review is from: The Ultimate Guide to Striped Bass Fishing: Where to Find Them, How to Catch Them (Hardcover)
I absolutely recommend this book to all who have a genuine interest in this exciting Game fish we chase, the Striper.

Concise, credible, and knowledgeable information based upon the authors deep years of experience and affinity for the Striper. Understand the Striper's biology & habits based upon weather/water conditions, location, season, food sources, as well as time and place, and you'll consistently land more fish and raise the level of your experience for a lifetime.

Tactical and presentation recommendations on live baits and artificial's give you what you need to know, when you need to know it, and how to deliver. Be prepared to catch more Striper's after reading this book. Read it several times and keep it close by for reference-

Nicely collected materials in the book but the book however does not really tell you where to find Striped Bass... the book tells you what locations to fish but does nothing to tell you how to find them. Do not be misled into thinking the book will give information about finding striped bass. Other than this false claim, the other information about striped bass is very nicely put together.
