4.0 out of 5 stars Almost the Ultimate.
I was first turned onto Johnny Mathis through his excellent Christmas album, and decided I needed to hear him more than one month a year. I went with this because I only wanted a single disc collection, yet one that had a lengthy tracklist (although this clocks in at only 58 minutes and should have been a 25 song disc). Even as a casual fan I could pick songs to fill...

2.0 out of 5 stars Dont Lose Your Money: This is not an Honest Hit Repackage
Why does American Sony repackage the same songs with different covers and offer some few tracks to attract buyers? I do not take it as honest as a market strategy should be. Browse back to Mathis originals and buy other CDs: "Johnny Greatest Hits", "Johnny" are good bets.

Even as a casual fan I could pick songs to fill another CD, but what's here belongs, and overall I'm vary happy with it. It's in chronological order, hence the first dozen songs are truly classic. Among the last third of the collection I like the "Love Theme From Romeo And Juliet" and the upbeat "Brazil", yet don't care for "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late". That duet is too 80's. There's many other collections of course, older and newer, but "Chances Are" you'll enjoy this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars How many times can this stuff be repackaged?, November 11, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Ultimate Hits Collection (Audio CD)
Sure, the music is great, and it's great to finally hear the 1986 "Brazil." Unfortunately, this stuff has appeared in so many compilations that it's not necessary. And every time a new album comes out the price goes up! Please Columbia, the masters of repackaging repackaged material, let Johnny make new albums.

4.0 out of 5 stars Master of the Ballad, October 21, 2004

Very few singers can handle a ballad better than Johnny Mathis which is living proof on this cd. His vocals are crystal clear and the whole recording is squeeky clean. He does my favourite vocal on 'Misty' included here. Very few singers can do justice to 'Stardust' because it's a very difficult piece to sing however Johnny makes the song his own. His hits are mostly included in this set. You might like to give your subwoofer a boost upwards for the first half of this cd. The only flaw is the live selection which ends the cd. I personally don't care for a mixture of studio and live.

this man has an elegence in his tone and the way he presents his music.he has been so good at just singing the heart into a song.when you need music with style, class and feeling this is a must have.he sounds even better today than before. if he get's solid material than folks would really have to worry cuz the guy can still phrase.

4.0 out of 5 stars great but not ultimately great!, August 18, 1999

This is very good compilation of Johnny Mathis finest songs.. It would be better if the Live Version is replaced by the Studio Version.. Also, this compilation should included Gina. So, this album is great but not ultimately great..

In the accompanying text to the album it is already acknowledged: How can you pick songs for an ultimate album from someone who is more than 40 years around and still making music ? I think that they made a good choice of Mathis performances on this cd. Take your love in your arms, take a sip of wine and listen to Johnny Mathis !

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent choice that never goes out of style, August 31, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Ultimate Hits Collection (Audio CD)
I have been listening to Johnny Mathis for 15 years now and continue to find his music exciting and comforting. His voice is unique and distintive on a par with the likes of Sarah Vanguah or Ella Fitzgerald. As a teacher of the English language, I like Johnny's phrasing and enunciation-impeccably clear and easy to understand. Johnny's personal life also mirrors his singing-refine and classy. This is a collection that will be with you all your life and that you will grow to appreciate and be comforted by each time you listen to it.
