Editorial Reviews

2011 two CD compilation from the Rock singer, songwriter and icon. For the first time, all of Bob Seger's top hits have been gathered for a career-spanning double disc set. The 26-track collection includes "Night Moves," "Turn The Page," "Hollywood Nights," "Mainstreet," "Old Time Rock And Roll," "Like A Rock," "Her Strut," "We've Got Tonight," "Against The Wind," "Still The Same," and many other classics, as well as the Detroit rocker's two #1 radio singles from this year, "Downtown Train" and his current #1 Classic Rock hit, "Hey Hey Hey Hey (Going Back To Birmingham)." All songs on the album have been meticulously remastered from the original master tapes, including the original mono version of Seger's first hit "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" and Seger's timeless rendition of the holiday classic "Little Drummer Boy."

He has sold more than 50 million records worldwide. During the ten year period between 1977 and 1986 Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band amassed an impressive total of 6 consecutive Top Ten albums while at the same time placing a string of 16 singles in the Billboard Top 40. All the while Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band were packing 'em in in arenas all over America. I always thought it extremely peculiar that his record label of more than three decades Capitol Records had never seen fit to issue a true anthology of his biggest hits and most popular recordings. At long last Capitol has corrected this oversight with the impressive two disc collection "Bob Seger: Ultimate Hits -- Rock & Roll Never Forgets". It seems to me that it was definitely worth the wait.

To begin with you will find each and every of of Bob Seger's seven Top Ten tunes in this collection including "Night Moves" the song that made him a star back in 1976. Also included are memorable hits like "Still The Same", "Shame On The Moon", "Against The Wind" and 1987's "Shakedown" from the motion picture "Beverly Hills Cop II" starring Eddie Murphy. That song was both an Academy Award and Golden Globe Award nominee for "Best Original Song" that year. Now oddly enough the most popular Bob Seger song of all-time was not one of his biggest-selling singles. "Old Time Rock & Roll" was initially released in April, 1979 and made its way to #28 on Billboard's Top Pop Singles chart. A few years later in 1983 Capitol re-released the single when it was featured in the Tom Cruise film "Risky Business". This time out it only made it to #48 on the charts. But "Old Time Rock & Roll" spoke to people across the generations and went on to become "the most played song ever by a male artist" and ranks #2 on the list of "Top 40 Jukebox Singles of All Time". Pretty impressive for the man from Dearborn, Michigan. And of course you will find that one in this collection as well. I was also extremely pleased to say that Bob Seger's raucous 1968 debut single for Capitol "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" was also included in this set. If you have never heard that one you are in for a real treat!

But make no mistake about it. Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band were much more than just a singles band. They sold tens of millions of albums for Capitol and in the heyday of "live" concerts in major arenas were consistantly one of the biggest draws in the country. "Bob Seger: Ultimate Hits -- Rock & Roll Never Forgets" Includes many of those fabulous album and concert favorites. Enjoy once again terrific tunes like "Her Strut", "Rock and Roll Never Forgets", "Turn The Page" and "Katmandu". There is also a "live" version of "Beautiful Loser" which just might be my favorite Seger song of all-time. Toss in some more of those great singles like "We've Got Tonight", "Hollywood Nights" and "Like A Rock" and what you wind up with is a pretty darn impressive 26 track collection that you are sure to enjoy for years to come.

Passionate Seger fans might quibble about one or two of the track selections. Personally, I would have liked to have seen the rockin' "C'est La Vie" from the original 1994 "Greatest Hits" album make the cut but it did not. Perhaps one or two of your favorites are missing as well. But on balance I thought the track selection for this anthology was outstanding. All of the songs on "Bob Seger: Ultimate Hits -- Rock & Roll Never Forgets" have been lovingly remastered for your listening enjoyment. In addition, the folks at Capitol have included a handsome 24 page booklet featuring photos, press clips and all of the lyrics to boot. At long last Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Bob Seger has a collection worthy of his considerable contributions to the American music scene. This is both well deserved and long overdue. "Bob Seger: Ultimate Hits -- Rock & Roll Never Forgets" would make a great gift for that baby boomer in your life. Very highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally a Decent Bob Seger Compilation November 21, 2011
Format:Audio CD
For some odd reason, the catalog of Bob Seger (BS) was more or less limited to his greatest hits compilation from the early 90s, taking advantage of people buying anew music they had on record LPs in the more recent CD format. Like other incomplete compilations from that period, e.g. Journey's Greatest Hits, it sold many million copies simply because those were the only sensible releases for people to buy (unlike Bob Seger, Journey's catalog was available but most people simply went for the Greatest Hits package).

A few glaring omissions in the previous BS compilation included Fire Lake, Rock and Roll Never Forgets, Katmandu, Shame on the Moon and his biggest hit, Shakedown (he said he hated it at that time). BS selected those tracks himself, not always the perfect judge on what the rest of the world considered his best moments. These omitted tracks are all here. Almost half, 12 tracks split evenly between his 3 biggest albums (Night Moves, Stanger in Town & Against the Wind), cover the 26 tracks in total. The rest is mostly radio and fan favorites. What you have here is thus a rather complete BS collection.

There are still a few, albeit minor hits missing, such as Even Now, The Real Love and American Storm. Also, his post 80s work is practically non-existent. Since there is plenty of space left on each CD, one could ask for a little more. I, however, don't mind that much (The Real Love the main exception, it is a great song), with the length of 2 sides of an LP just about the right length in one listening session of BS for me.

I recommend paying a few extra $ (actually when this is written, maybe just a dollar or two) for this set as opposed to the single CD version since this one is way more complete track wise. The old version also had terrible acoustics (maybe an indication of the sloppiness of that compilation)with a flat bright feel , something that has been smoothed on this version. This is, finally, the decent Seger compilation.

It replaces the 2-disc "Greatest Hits" from ten or so years ago, but other songs are missing that would make this a complete collection. First off, the best "Fire" song that Seger wrote, "The Fire Inside," is not here, nor are "C'est la Vie" or "Rosalie." The collection seems to aim towards radio listeners only, or people who only want one CD of Seger's music (even though he just re-released "Live Bullet.") However, I remember hearing "The Fire Inside" every single day in the afternoon in the car when it was new, and can actually recite several of the lyrics and the hook after not having heard it for a few years now.

That said, why is "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" even here at all? Recorded in 1968, it sounds very out of place given the gloss of the late-70s/early 80s material. If you've ever heard the album "Smokin' OP's," you know what I mean, as that album, cut in 1972, includes a grainy sounding track, 'Heavy Music," recorded in 1966. There, "Heavy Music" sounds out of place. Here, "Ramblin'" sounds out of place, as it sounds like a) another artist, and b) nothing else on the collection, as far as sound quality and production are concerned (perhaps they should take the tracks and alter the production to sound "current," like ZZ Top did with their entire discography?)

Really, what is needed is a "1968-1974" collection (even if it only sells 50,000 copies), as this collection covers the rest in an incomplete but nearly acceptable way. Right now, Seger's actual best material cannot be easily acquired by interested listeners. Unfortunately, "Early Seger Vol. 1" attempted to cover that concept, but half of the tracks were recorded in the 80s - which means, if it is ever released, "Early Seger Vol. 2" will also be incomplete and will need to be coupled with Vol. 1, and it will also likely have more "unreleased 80s tracks." I wouldn't personally consider recordings Seger cut after age 40 as "Early," as that was the age that marked his successful period.

Who is in control of Seger's catalog? Whomever it is, it's in disarray, and that doesn't appear as if it will be rectified. Capitol refusing to re-release some of its artists' best recordings from the artist's "developmental" phase (Seger, Steve Miller, etc.) is a travesty.

Also, will we ever get the studio version of "Lookin Back," which was always considered one of Seger's most crucial lyrics? Fans, by now, realize that Seger, Capitol, and Punch are not fans of his first seven or eight albums, or any singles that preceded "Hollywood Nights." Sure, this music has made millions and can be heard every day. Apparently, all we'll get from Seger from here on out, barring a "new" studio album or a "live" collection from the 2011 tour (likely) are more hits re-releases containing the same material, or patchworks of eras. I'm surprised people are still spending money on the retreads. Such is life, though (e.g. remaster the same 20 cuts every five years, release the same album as "remastered," and sit back and cash the checks as the public flocks to the same recordings and concepts of old.)

Idea: why not release the albums with 10 extra tracks each, recorded from the actual era the album was cut, like the Rolling Stones? You have to admit that the Stones' expanded versions of "Exile" and "Some Girls," while not the equals of the original albums, are worth the purchase for true fans and casuals alike (true fans get extras, casual fans get what they wanted, remastered.)

No such brightness on the Seger horizon, though, and I'd personally prefer expanded versions of the first eight or so albums than an expanded "Night Moves," which is what we'd likely get if Capitol went down this road.

Ultimate?
Exactly my thinking. Why on earth are "The Fire Inside", "Sunspot Baby" and "Wreck This Heart" not on this cd? And why have the idiots at Capitol not reissued any of the albums released between 1969-1974 other than Smokin' O.P.'s? Someone needs to get on that... Read more
