Nice mix of covers and originals, March 29, 2005
This review is from: Ultimate Jackie De Shannon (Audio CD)
This isn't the ultimate collection of Jackie's music (as the title might suggest) but it is nevertheless a magnificent showcase for her talents.
All the sixties classics that Jackie is famous for, whether as singer or as songwriter including What the world needs now (a Bacharach-David song that was a British and American top ten hit for Jackie) and Put a little love in your heart (Jackie's biggest American hit, which she wrote). Many people think that Jackie wrote Needles and pins - she didn't, but it was her version that the Searchers covered. It became a major international hit for them and this encouraged them to record some of Jackie's own songs, most notably When you walk in the room.
Aside from the famous songs, this collection contains many excellent covers of other people's songs that demonstrate Jackie's brilliance and versatility. Apart from Needles and pins and What the world needs now, these include Don't let the sun catch you crying, It's all in the game, Summertime, You don't have to say you love me, Will you love me tomorrow and Call me.
Jackie has been poorly served by CD releases but things are slowly improving. This collection makes an ideal introduction to Jackie's music but will also be of interest to those who have some of her other CD compilations - some of the tracks here have not appeared on CD before.
