5.0 out of 5 stars the ultimate jesse cook
simply stated. if i want to lie back and chill out, i listen to ottmar or govi. but if i want my blood to boil, jesse cook has to be my choice. i have made my own compilation of all of jesse's cd's and have titled it "boiling". no artist past or present has effected me more than jesse cook, and i was born in 1937. jack stanley

3.0 out of 5 stars Almost but not Quite the Essence of Jesse Cook
I already own all Jesse Cook's albums, but when a friend who has his own band, and is an excellent guitarist in his own right praised various guitarists and I mentioned that after Chet Atkins, Jesse Cook was my favorite technician--well, his blank face told me I had to get him this "best of" CD for a gift.

The selection tries to give equal weight to all...

Other than a few cuts I would add from Nomad and Vertigo, this compilation has most of the spectacular tunes Jesse Cook and friends have produced. This is THE BARGAIN of the bunch.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cooking with Gas, That's Cook!, September 4, 2007

If you want music that will get you moving, yet be unabtrusive when necessary, this artist and his blend of flamenco meeting new age is for you. I've been listening to Cook for a few years now, having discovered him after my search for more music to expand my interest in acoustic guitar.

Following Leibert, Cook is one of my favorites. He truly knows his way around a guitar. And while I can't say I equally love every cut on this compilation, overall, I enjoy this set very much.

I know, I know, if you're a flamenco purist or snob, artists like him make you crazy and you'd never think to add him to your collection! But, for the rest of us who simply want something that makes us think, work by, relax by, entertain by, and makes you happy...well I don't think Cook can be beat. I'm hoping this really isn't The Ultimate Jesse Cook, because that would mean there's not much more to follow and I'm hoping for great new sounds from Cook for many listening years to come.

This CD set is a great sampling of Jesse Cook. If your just tuning in, or on a tight budget, get this CD set. Otherwise, I reccomend getting ALL his other CD/Albums individually. I ordered Gravity and Vertigo at the same time I purchased this one and there is a lot of cross over. Had I done it over, I would have just purchased the two single albums - Gravity & Vertigo - and would not buy this one. Since I own them all now (not a bad thing *smile*) I will just give this set to my sister who is not a Jesse Cook fan yet :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Compilation, July 31, 2007

The Ultimate Jesse Cook is not your typical "Best of" compilations. Most of the tracks have been carefully laid out and arranged for easy listening. His talent is remarkable. The instrumentals are awesome!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best I've Heard!!, March 8, 2007
This review is from: The Ultimate Jesse Cook (2-CD Set) (Audio CD)
I was given this double CD as a gift and I had never heard of the artist before then. I put it on when I was doing company taxes and this has got to be the BEST contemporary guitar music I have heard! TERRIFIC!

While I always enjoy Jessie Cook's work this 2-CD set has far too many selections from the Gravity and Tempest CDs. If you have those two CDs then purchasing this set is kind of a waste.

Firstly: you get a really good mix which covers all of his 6 releases
Secondly: you get 2 disc for the price of one
Finally: you get an excellent production/sound quality.

The selection tries to give equal weight to all aspects of Cook's evolution as an acoustic-new age-flamenco-jazz-whatever guitar icon. that's the problem for me. I like what I know and I know what I like.

When I first heard the arpeggio's at lightning pace of a jazz guitar with a distinctive spanish or flamenco tone, and crisp, clean audio reproductions, I fell in love with Jesse Cook. In later albums he tried to include some DVD,s vocals, Ravi shankar India-MidEastern-arabesque ethno babble and, yes, it was all good....but it sounded like a million other great street musicians whose CD's are peddled for ten bucks outside every busy bizarre and plaza in the world...sort of like finding Zamfir panflute wannabees in peruvian garb playing for loose change in Rome, or Amsterdam, or New York....If you've never listened to Jesse Cook I suppose you need this album.....if you like what you hear, just go back and buy his first two or three albums before he decided he needed to be politically correct and multi ethnic things to all musical tastes.
