A Short History of the Origins of the Martini
1. Made by bartender professor Jerry Thomas of San Francisco for a stranger on his way to Martinez. Made with gin, vermouth, bitters, dash of maraschino.

2. Made by a bartender in Martinez, California, for a gold miner who struck it rich. The miner ordered champagne for the house, but there was none. The bartender offered something better- "Martinez Special"-made with sauterne and gin. The rich miner spread the word, ordering throughout California a "Martinez Special."

3. Named after the British army rifle: The Martini and Henry. The rifle was known for its kick, like the first sip of gin and "it" ("it" being vermouth).

4. Named after Martini and Rossi vermouth, because it was first used in the drink, gin, and "it," with 1/2 gin and 1/2 Martini and Rossi vermouth.

5. At the Knickerbocker Hotel in the early 1900s, a bartender named Martini di Arma Tiggia mixed a martini using only a dry gin and only dry vermouth.

5.0 out of 5 stars With over 1000 martini recipes, it's "martini heaven", May 4, 2010
This review is from: The Ultimate Little Martini Book (Ultimate Little Drinks Book) (Paperback)
Whether you just want a crisp cool drink to sip while on your deck, or are planning a party with tons of martini glasses to be filled, it's a great "go-to" book. We, personally, like to plan a gathering where we serve a "signature drink" when it's BYOB for a big bash and the focus is on food, as everyone gets to enjoy their own cocktail if they want, but try something new as well if they'd rather have that. This provides tons of options for a signature party drink or 1000.

It's a plus that name brands are suggested for each recipe, when needed. For example, if Finlandia Vodka is preferred in a certain recipe, that is noted, while Skyy Vodka may be the preference in another. Of course, you can use what you have at home instead, but I appreciate that they aren't plugging one certain brand in the book and really think about brand preference if it does matter to you. I don't always follow it...but it's there.

The book is set up alphabetically by drink name and they aren't just recipes from the author...the book is full of signature drinks from bars and restaurants that have a popular drink as well.

It's a little book and very thick...interspersed with cartoons featuring the martini.

I rarely look for a certain drink in the book...it's a tad more fun to just go through it and find something new to try...thus far, whatever we've tried we have enjoyed.

Conclusion: If it's a martini recipe, odds are it's in here. Simple recipes that are easy to follow from traditional to exotic.

3.0 out of 5 stars Just okay, lots of recipe listings but not much depth, January 15, 2009

We all could make long lists of possible martinis, there are so many possible ingredients. But that wouldn't make for all that good of a reference for someone wanting to expand beyond the "Bombay Sapphire and shine a light through a bottle of Vermouth" dry martini. There's little in here on making a good martini, and I think there are better book options out there.

If you dont know your alcohols, then this isn't the book for you. It just lists what you need, doesn't really show how to make them. The book was in great condition though. Thanks!
