The game contains 12 new fighters, in addition to those found in earlier game versions. It also features new game modes including a spectator mode, and the 'Heroes and Heralds' Mode. The PS Vita version of the game is virtually identical to the console versions, while incorporating the handheld's touch controls and portability.

An Expanded Roster of Fighters

The highly acclaimed fighting series adds 12 new legends to the robust Marvel vs. Capcom 3 lineup, bringing the total overall roster of characters up to 50. This includes zombie-slayer Frank West on the Capcom side and cosmic defender Rocket Raccoon from the Marvel Universe. The new character options also include Phoenix Wright, Vergil, Nemesis, Strider and Firebrand from Capcom and Nova, Iron Fist, Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider and Hawkeye from Marvel.

New Features and Modes

In addition to new characters, Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 features a host of enhancements and features to improve the game's balance and online functionality. One of the biggest additions to the game is the fan-requested Spectator Mode, which allows fighters to watch live online matches together. Also, available as free downloadable content after launch is the 'Heroes and Heralds' Mode, a new single player and multiplayer team-based mode in which player unlock brand-new abilities with upgrade cards, customize favorite characters with new powers and compete in groups as either heroes defending Earth from Galactus or as one of Galactus' Heralds.

PS Vita Specific Features

The power of the PS Vita allows its version of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 to play and look virtually identical to the console releases, but it also provides players with control functionality unique to the Sony handheld. Utilizing the PS Vita's front and rear touch screen and pad, players can unleash simple combos by 'mashing' the screen with taps. The basic level of these 'touch' combos ensures that players who choose to use standard combo input patterns using the Vita's d-pad and face buttons are not at a disadvantage, as more advanced combos are always available if the right button pattern is entered correctly. The touch pad can also be used to unleash hyper combos by tapping a character's full hyper combo meter, and to tag in a new character from a player's team by simply touching the image of that character.

Key Game Features

  • Addictive fighting gameplay featuring tag-team action with teams of three fighters
  • Experience the ultimate roster of 50 Capcom and Marvel heroes and villains, including every character from the original game and 12 new fighters
  • The power of the PS Vita allows this version of the game to look and play virtually identical to console versions, including combo button patterns
  • PS Vita specific touch controls allow for the option of unleashing simplified attacks by simply tapping the screen, or a standard control scheme
  • Explore eight new over-the-top stages that will put your fighting skills to the test
  • Enjoy new modes and enhancements, including the fan-requested Spectator Mode during the online experience, and the 'Heroes and Heralds' single player and multiplayer team-based mode
  • The game includes standard play modes: Arcade, Versus, and Training

5.0 out of 5 stars UMVC3 on Vita March 16, 2012
Platform for Display:PlayStation Vita
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This might get a bit long so bear with me.

I'm going to go into the differences and Vita-centric differences to this game. There's already plenty to of reviews out there for the game itself.

For starters, some of the reviews have it wrong. You can't play people online Vita-PS3. It's only Vita-Vita and PS3-PS3. What cross-play means is that if you buy any DLC, you can share it between both games. (for example, the costume packs). Secondly, Heroes and Heralds is day one DLC (Downloadable Content for those who don't know), but it's free and already comes included with the game.Overall this mode is a great way to keep the game feeling fresh. You level up, collect cards, play matches etc.

CONTROLS-I've played fighting games for a long time. I've gone to tournaments, I own an arcade stick, I've dedicated a significant amount of time into learning the game. UMVC3 on vita is great. The buttons on the vita are great for pulling off complicated combos. The closeness of the button actually helps so when you have to press two buttons together to pull of a special moves, it's very easy. I use the d-pad but the joystick feels great. I like it a lot better than the Dualshock b/c the range of movement is smaller thus letting you pull of moves faster with your thumb. As someone who is used to using an arcade stick (Hori V3 with 8-gate) and dislikes the dualshock. I've gotten very used to the Vita controls and find them very comfortable for playing. Controls were my biggest issue when I bought the game but I figured I could at least practice some of the combos or how things link when I don't have time to do it at home. I was very surprised at how comfortable the controls were and how I keep finding myself playing this game a lot more than I initially thought.

ONLINE-Online play is great. It uses it's own Vita ranking system. So whatever score you had on your PS3 with your PSN account will be different from the Vita version. This makes sense since obviously people will be playing with Touch controls and with a different set of controls you're used to. During my time with it I've been able to find someone to play with online using Rank Match and there's always some lobbies open. People online range from your typical newcomers to really Elite players. This makes playing online very fun. I've encountered a lot more people quitting in the middle of a match when they're losing. I suppose the vita makes it easier for them to quit. This is more frequent but it doesn not really ruin the experience of the game, I feel it's worth pointing out though.

GRAPHICS-Graphics are on par with the console version in everything except text. Animations look vibrant, crisp, and fluid but text looks choppy and low-res. You run into text at the end of every match so it's easy to see. It's not a huge turnoff b/c in time you'll skip most of it, but it is a very clear difference from the console version.

TOUCH CONTROLS-Touch controls are a great addition. You don't have to change your settings. There's an added "Touch Controls" section with the other modes so it makes it easy to jump into it. I think this is a great addition b/c I can give the game to someone new to the game and they can tap away and make flashy combos. You won't learn anything from using the touch controls but if you're a casual gamer, you can have a good amount of fun just using those. Although to get any decent mileage you'll have to invest time into learning the actual buttons. Being a long time fighting game fan I can assure you that Touch Controls are not unbalanced and will not give an inexperienced player an unfair advantage. What it does do is that it makes the game very accessible to someone who doesn't want to take the time to learn the game and just wants to have some beat 'em up fun.

PS3 CONTROLLER-I have not tried the controller mode in which you can use the PS Vita as a controller for the PS3 game only for this game. So I cannot speak about that part.

Overall this is a great game. A great port of the console version. It doesn't improve on the console game such as the extensive "saving" after every match. But the annoyances are minor in scope of the big picture.

Hope this review is helpful to some.

5.0 out of 5 stars A surprisingly impressive port. February 27, 2012
Platform for Display:PlayStation Vita|Amazon Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I'm not a technically-minded fighting game player so I can't really speak to the specifics of the gameplay system and whether or not it lends itself well to technical play. I can however say that the game is a hell of a lot of fun to play, and is really pretty impressive for a portable game.

The graphics are on par with the HD console versions of the game. The game's 48 default characters appear large and detailed, and animate fluidly. If there's any slowdown it's so minor as to be virtually unnoticable, and the majority of the time the game appears to run at an impressive 60 frames per second. The backgrounds feature fewer animated elements, and certain levels that scrolled in the console versions don't appear to here. Loading times seem to be roughly on par with the PS3 version.

I had concerns going in that the Vita's smaller face-buttons buttons might hamper the gameplay a bit, but I surprisingly found myself having an easier time of it than I did even the PS3 version. The D-Pad is solid, and pulling off complicated combos, special moves, and supers works like a charm. In fact I find myself enjoying the game even more than I did on the PS3. The Touch mode is...well, it's there. In it you can tap the screen to perform combos and activate your supers and X-Factor, which while neat to mess around with for a bit quickly leaves the game feeling like an effortless cake-walk to complete. I think it's something that most folks might be inclined to mess around with once or twice, but I don't see it having legs.

The game features all the same gameplay modes as its console cousins do, including Heroes and Heralds (which is day-one DLC). The online stuff is set up exactly like it was on the console versions, and thankfully you have the option of filtering out touch-screen players when you set up matches. You can also opt to allow folks to interrupt your game for matches if you'd like, and again you can choose not to allow touch-screen players to challenge you if you're so inclined. You do have to be connected to Wi-Fi to play online though, as attempting to access the online components on 3G will only allow you to check the leaderboards. In my experiences with it thus-far, online gameplay performed pretty well and was relatively lag-free, but while it was a ton of fun, I'm such a scrub that I'm probably going to spend the bulk of my time with the game offline until I get a bit better at it.

If you have the PS3 version you can take advantage of the Ultimate Controller mode, which allows you to use your Vita to control the PS3 game and allows you to map your choice of special moves and/or supers to the touch-screen. That mode really doesn't add much value to the package, and again, you do need the PS3 version to take advantage of it, but if you meet that requirement then it's a nifty extra to tool around with once or twice. Another very cool bonus is that any DLC that you purchased for the PS3 version of the game will be available for you to use on the Vita at no extra charge. So if you've bought any costumes or the two DLC exclusive characters for the PS3 game, then they're yours to use on the Vita as well.

The TL;DR version of this review is basically that you're getting the console game in the palm of your hand with a couple of new modes that take advantage of the Vita, and with the only real compromise being that a few of the backgrounds are static or feature fewer animated elements than in the console version. It's a ton of fun, the online play works well, any DLC purchased for the PS3 version carries over, and it controls like a dream. If you want a great version of the game on the go, it's well worth checking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite VIta game so far April 4, 2012
Platform for Display:PlayStation Vita|Amazon Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I've purchased a handful of games, and bought some from the PSP store. Marvel/Capcom is my favorite of the hardware games, so far. There's just SO MUCH in this game. You can play through a ton of chracters before you find your favorite. Or, like me, you find a couple of favorites, especially since there are so many different fighting styles.

I still can't wait for Mortal Kombat to be released, but I'll wait for the reviews on that one to decide if I want to get another fighter. So far, Marvel/Capcom has everything I could need in a fully-fledged fighter.

Highly recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent port to Vita
UMvC3 makes a great port to the PlayStation Vita. It's a fun fighter that can get pretty technical and a bit difficult, but if you can learn it well, it'll be fun for a long time.

Worth for the single player?
I definitely think you'll be able to have fun with this game in singleplayer. As long as you aren't a super hardcore fighting game fan who wants to climb to the top of the leader boards. :)

Will the DLC be included?
I didn't even realize that the DLC was transfered from the regular to the Ultimate. I had just assumed it was on the disc since they were there when I loaded up UMvC3, sorry about that.

Anyone else getting this as their first copy of Marvel vs Capcom 3?
I bought the first one on PS3 and then traded it in once news broke out that there was an ultimate version. I think having a version on the go would be ideal for me. I never play fighting games for extended amounts of time.

Tested: playable on 3G
marvel vs. capcom is not playable over 3g. this is a well-known fact. the only thing you can do over 3g in MVC3 is check leaderboards.
however in blazblue, you can fight online over 3g.

Roster of 50 or 48?
The last 2 are the blank grey squares at the top. They are Shuma Gorath and Jill Valentine which were dlc on the console version and will be the same for this version. If you have bought them on the ps3 then on the 22nd they will be free as a transfer.
