I think this is one of the best out of the MK series. MK:DA was easily the best. Then came MKII. And in third comes Ultimate MKIII. I think this is one of the best out of the MK series. MK:DA was easily the best. Then came MKII. And in third comes Ultimate MKIII. This is almost like Trilogy (having nearly every character), but the characters actually have plots that make sense. All of the favorite characters are in this version. Including Scorpion, Classic Sub-Zero, Rain, and my favorite: Noob Saibot. OK, Ill admit that the graphics werent the best. But, then again...its SNES. The graphics were good enough compared to other SNES games (its unfair to compair them to PS2 or XBox graphics). The main reason why this game is a classic, is because all of them bonuses. Extra levels, characters, little suprises, area fatalities, etc. There are only two downfalls about this game. And it involves characters. 1)No Sheeva, she was a badass. Sheeva appears only in the Genesis version. 2)No Baraka, he was a badass. Even with those two flaws, this is still a great game. Throughout MK history, Ive always been a Sub Zero fan. But Noob Saibot is much harder in this game. Unfortunatly, Midway stopped production for this game kinda early so they can make copies of it for the N64. So the game is kinda hard to find. But whatever you spend on this game will be worth it! Here is a list of all the characters.

Sonya Blade,Cyrax,Jade,Jax,Kabal,Liu Kang,Kano,Kitana,Kung Lao,Nightwolf,Reptile,Scorpion,Sektor,Sindel,Smoke,Kurtis Stryker,Sub-Zero,Shang Tsung,Ermac,Mileena,Ninja Smoke,Classic Sub-Zero,Rain,Noob Saibot

Bosses: same as MKIII, Shao Khan & Motaro.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, January 10, 2003
This review is from: Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (Video Game)
This game was flat out awesome! The graphics were superb and frankly superior to those on the SEGA and who do you go wrong with getting every single character up front without having to unlock them???

Like I said not only do you get all of the favorites on this one (Sub Zero, Sonya, Jax, Cyrax, Kabal etc) but now you got all of the mystery characters as well like Noob Saibot, Ermac, Rain, SCorpion (who again is totally harsh), Robot Smoke and Jade (I'm pretty sure that's all of them).

I skipped getting Mortal Kombat 3 when I found out that UMK 3 was coming to the SNES and trust the extra wait was worth it because this is easily one of the best games that was one SNES. And probably one of the last really good one.

You have to get this game! It's totally awesome and great to play with a couple of friends. Definately check out UMK 3 and also check out STREET FIGHTER ALPHA 2 for SNES.

5.0 out of 5 stars MK Family, September 18, 2007

Mortal Kombat series is truly awesome. This version includes so many new characters that they almost had to not include the few that were left out. But, the ones that are here will give you so much to choose from that you will not feel slighted. My only problem with this game is that it is NOT easy. It is best played against someone else because the game itself will not offer you any consolation or latitude. The fatalities are creative and many. The characters are familiar and some are quite similar in appearance but their abilities separate them and make this an ideal universe to turn into a feature length film if done correctly.

2.0 out of 5 stars An attempt to correct mistakes..., November 23, 2011
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (Video Game)
If you're like me, you probably grew up with Midway's Mortal Kombat games. If you're new to the series with Netherrealm's latest game, or you picked up during the dreadful 3-D days don't worry...I'll try to be unbiased. In 1995, Midway(now NRS) finally released the long awaited sequel to the 1993 blockbuster, Mortal Kombat 2. As the team was working on development, they were hit with a major snag...one of their own actors/developers, Daniel Pesina(Johnny Cage and the ninjas), decided to branch out and use Cage's image for an ad for "Bloodstorm," a cheap MK clone made by a rival company. Midway fired him for this, as well as his brother, Carlos(who later came back when it was determined that he wasn't involved). And on top of that, Daniel and several others were involved in a legal suit with Midway over images used in MK2. Anyway...the developers were left without several key members of their acting squad. As a result, the game we expected differed drastically from the game we got...Raiden, Cage, and the ninjas were missing...a new actor was portraying a maskless Sub-Zero and we were introduced to cyborg ninjas portrayed by yet another new actor. These elements, along with some broken gameplay, caused a lot of negative reactions among the MK loyals. In the days before DLC and patches, the only fix was a rerelease. And thus, we received Ultimate MK3. The new title fixed some broken gameplay from the original, and brought back old fan favorites with some new blood.Kitana,Jade,Mileena, Reptile, Scorpion, and ninja Noob returned(MK3 Noob was just a palette-swapped Kano without specials). The new characters were Rain and Ermac. Rain was only seen in the arcades during the intro as a teaser, and made available for the home consoles. Which brings me to my review finally...

The SNES and Genesis versions were altered drastically from the arcade version. All the hidden fighters(Ermac,Mileena,Classic Sub-Zero) were available right from the start, as were Rain and Noob. You had the new stages, plus the codes, menus, etc. That's a lot of content for a 16-bit cartridge...and ultimately killed this game. The SNES cart in particular was extremely glitchy in that it would work about 65% of the time when you tried to start it. Either the screen would stay black, or the game would freeze at times. Once you get it working, then the other problems became apparent. First, the graphics...not nearly as sharp as MK3. It looked like they had to be scaled back a bit...the Main Menu background is a low-res brick layout rather than the sleek stone of MK3. Then we have missing sounds and music. Nothing major...just certain voice files were removed to make room for extra character data. Finally, the fact that Noob and Rain had no fatalities due to space restrictions. Oh did I mention they excluded Sheeva from the console releases? They took out the least popular character to make room for the newer characters. Overall, this game is still MK and still fun to play...but, I wouldn't commit to this version. I'd go with the Saturn(identical to the arcade),emulator versions, or just skip to Trilogy, which corrected all of MK3's and UMK3's problems.

4.0 out of 5 stars The End Of The Original Mortal Kombat Games, November 12, 2011
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 (Video Game)
I've always viewed Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 as the last of the original Mortal Kombat games. The Mortal Kombat series after Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 would change so drastically and branch off into so many unique dimensions (such as Mythologies Sub Zero) that the series would become virtually unrecognizable from the original series, whereas the first installments on the 16-bit systems (Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2, Mortal Kombat 3 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3) all have a likeness to one another even if they all possess noticeable differences.

I have always felt that the box and logo for Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 had the best art. The black light / Ultraviolet purple light cast on the realistic skeleton bones always seemed to be a bit more on the brooding side, and a step up from the traditional dragon logo.

One major disappointment of the original Mortal Kombat 3 was the characters. Sub-Zero was changed to an unmasked character, which corrupted the mystique of the original Sub-Zero. Also, Scorpion and Reptile were completely left out of the game, which many fans hated since the masked ninjas were favorites. Kitana, Mileena, Rayden and Baraka were replaced by the likes of Sheeva, Sindel, Kabal, Nightwolf, Stryker, Sektor, Cyrax, and Robot Smoke. Brought back were Sonya Blade and Kano after being left out of the second installment. So how did the Mortal Kombat series improve off of these mistakes?

They included everyone. Every Mortal Kombat character was now playable. Every character that got slighted from the third Mortal Kombat was now included, and given new fatalities, friendships, animalities, etc. On top of that, characters like Jade and Human Smoke, which were secret enemies and hadn't been playable before, were now playable. Masked Sub-Zero was brought back, and naturally Scorpion was given a slightly different appearance, and was also again playable. Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 even went ahead and took it a step further by throwing in the likes of Noob Saibot and Ermac. Ermac was the legendary Mortal Komat 1 hoax that proved to be nothing more than an error message with no actual screen shot as proof. New masked ninjas Chameleon and Rain were even now playable. The list of selectable characters was really pushed to the limit in Mortal Kombat 3. In fact, because of the sheer magnitude of the list, this title truly deserves it's name.

I do not recall the arcade nor the console release being a runaway hit. While I do remember the social ramifications and raging success of the first Mortal Kombat, the incredible hype and success of the second installment plus the success of the third as a console release, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 seemed to be viewed as a tired afterthought, as other fighting games were starting to really enjoy the scene as well. The Street Fighter series, the chief rival of the Mortal Kombat series, was enjoying good success, and other new fighting games with their own unique gimmicks, such as dinosaurs fighting in Primal Rage, and the ultra cool ultra combos of the Killer Instinct series, were sharing more of the fighting game genres' booming success. Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, despite having so many characters and appearing to be the Mortal Kombat game that fans were supposed to be in love with, it just didn't reach that level.

The Super Nintendo port is, of course, superior to the Genesis port. Better sound, better graphics, and enough buttons on the controller make it a no-brainer as to which copy is more enjoyable to play. Personally, I like this game a lot. In fact, I would venture to say that if this game had come out instead of Mortal Kombat 3, fans would have loved it more. Or, if Mortal Kombat 3 didn't have so many new characters and so few old characters, fans would have enjoyed it more. Instead, we have Mortal Kombat 3, which is the black sheep of the original series, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, which is just a copy that corrects the mistakes of 3.

The same thing that makes this game great is also it's greatest weakness. There is just too many characters. No one could ever master every character because each has their own set of special moves, combos, and finishers. It's just too much. It kinda makes you wish that some of the newer unnecessary characters had been puposefully left out so that more of a game could have been made out of this.

In the end, I suppose it is better that we have all these characters to choose from, because if some had been purposefully left out, it would have aggrevated someone who loved that character. Ultimately, this is a great installment of the series, even if it is the only one that collected dust during it's day.

3.0 out of 5 stars Incomplete, June 13, 2006

UMK3 for the SNES is a hard game to make out. On one hand, the gameplay options are all intact and work like they should. Punches, kicks, pre-programmed combos and projectiles are here. The tournament modes, vs. matches and kombat kodes are present. Graphics are pretty spiffy too. From a pure gameplay perspective, UMK3 is what fans of the series expect.

But presentation-wise, things are looking very incomplete. While this game was essentially a full upgrade to the original Mortal Kombat 3 in arcades, here it feels like an expansion pack that can't interact with the original product. Missing are all the original backgrounds, and most of the announcer voices (like character names). Sheeva is no longer available, though a 'ghost' version of her remains in the code that causes the game to crash if used. Rain and Noob Saibot have no finishing moves, and many of the palette-swapped ninjas have recycled or modified animation to account for the SNES's limited memory. Some of the cuts are forgivable, some aren't, but in the end it feels like you bought 50% of a game instead of a full one.

There's really no reason to pick this up if you own MK Trilogy for Playstation or Nintendo 64. For Super Nintendo, I'd actually recommend the original MK3 over this one, as it feels like a more complete experience.
