Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Karl Moore openly admits he has a job the envy of most school children: he plays around with a whole bundle of computer tools and gizmos, then gets paid to write about them. He's officially a technology author, living in Yorkshire, England - however has a surprising number of rather elaborate feathers in his creative cap.

Karl started his ticker-tape-style work in computers at some very early age, coding with the old Spectrum and Amstrad machines way back when. He later developed a keen interest in Windows programming and slowly started to swamp some of the leading industries with innovative software solutions: from "predictive dialing" packages, which later became an industry norm, to automation products that ran a number of large, prestigious companies.

Around this time, Karl started writing for the UK's only weekly national computing magazine, Micro Mart - followed shortly by a weekly technology spot on BBC radio. As his user-friendly writing style became more and more known to the industry, he became an official journalist with a number of Internet.com sites, plus started his still-going weekly syndicated column, Dot Column.

In a bid to handle the increased workload, Karl decided to form his own technology company, back in 1999. That company was White Cliff Computing Ltd and consisted of a team of highly enthusiastic individuals that went on to produce such award-winning components as WebZinc and Webigo, plus own large industry-leading Internet properties, such as the VB-World Network, where Karl came in as Senior Editor.

Karl still writes his Dot Column article, regularly speaks at companies and conferences.

5.0 out of 5 stars Understand the meaning of this book., April 12, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: The Ultimate VB .NET and ASP.NET Code Book (Paperback)
This is a great book with the intention of showing real world tools and tips to fast track any developer. The emphasis of the material is to help developers looking for those tricks we all spend hours and hours trying to figure out. It's NOT a reference book, it's NOT a step by step book. It's a book for a somewhat experienced programmer looking for quick answers. We always miss our tricks when moving to a new platform...Karl has figured out those asp/vb6 tricks for us in VB.NET

Golden!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic follow-up!!, July 26, 2003
By
This review is from: The Ultimate VB .NET and ASP.NET Code Book (Paperback)
I've been a fan of Moore since his first book, and this is a fantastic follow-up. This book is a real bible for anyone working with VB .NET and ASP.NET.

It starts at the beginning, with a warm introduction to anyone new to the world of .NET. Then it gets down to its no-nonsense method of delivering "secrets". Each chapter is split into two sections... the "Essentials" and the "Secrets".

The Essentials briefly clues you up and provides short bullet points to refresh your memory and straighten out any difficult points. Then the Secrets section gets into the real juice, explaining all those real "nuggets" of information that you only find out about once in a blue moon... like how to create programs that automatically update themselves, or where you can download a program to auto-write your code for you, or which parts of the .NET Framework contain bugs and how to work around them.

This is SUCH a refreshing change from the usual trashy Wrox publications, which simply seem intent on explaining the theory, or telling you how to install the thing, or how to create simple programs. This provides absolute real-world code to use instantly.

It covers everything from Windows development, Web development, Web services, C# - and everything else a developer needs.

Plus, make sure you download the source to go with this book. I did and it's got a few extra code chunks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it even if you are a C# coder!, January 11, 2004
This review is from: The Ultimate VB .NET and ASP.NET Code Book (Paperback)
I'm a Karl Moore fan after reading this book. It contains so many useful code snippets that I didn't want the book to end. While some of the examples can be found online in other people's tutorials, Karl's pellucid explanations and sample code make this publication worth purchasing.

The Ultimate VB.NET and ASP.NET Code Book is the only Visual Basic .NET guide I have bought; translating the code into C# is easy and is certainly worthwhile considering the usefulness of the code examples.

No matter what your level of .NET proficiency may be, check out this latest work by Karl Moore. I think you will like it!
