5.0 out of 5 stars Understand the meaning of this book.
This is a great book with the intention of showing real world tools and tips to fast track any developer. The emphasis of the material is to help developers looking for those tricks we all spend hours and hours trying to figure out. It's NOT a reference book, it's NOT a step by step book. 2.0 out of 5 stars too popular
The content is ok, however the writing style of Karl Moore is really bad. He tries to be funny whole the time. The first few pages I thought it would be ok, however he continues until the very last page of the book.

Example: "I'm really pleased you're sticking with the tutorials. You're obviously one of the few people that truly arent't offended by my smell"...

Golden!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic follow-up!!, July 26, 2003
By
This review is from: The Ultimate VB .NET and ASP.NET Code Book (Paperback)
I've been a fan of Moore since his first book, and this is a fantastic follow-up. This book is a real bible for anyone working with VB .NET and ASP.NET.

It starts at the beginning, with a warm introduction to anyone new to the world of .NET. Then it gets down to its no-nonsense method of delivering "secrets". Each chapter is split into two sections... the "Essentials" and the "Secrets".

The Essentials briefly clues you up and provides short bullet points to refresh your memory and straighten out any difficult points. Then the Secrets section gets into the real juice, explaining all those real "nuggets" of information that you only find out about once in a blue moon... like how to create programs that automatically update themselves, or where you can download a program to auto-write your code for you, or which parts of the .NET Framework contain bugs and how to work around them.

This is SUCH a refreshing change from the usual trashy Wrox publications, which simply seem intent on explaining the theory, or telling you how to install the thing, or how to create simple programs. This provides absolute real-world code to use instantly.

It covers everything from Windows development, Web development, Web services, C# - and everything else a developer needs.

Plus, make sure you download the source to go with this book. I did and it's got a few extra code chunks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it even if you are a C# coder!, January 11, 2004
This review is from: The Ultimate VB .NET and ASP.NET Code Book (Paperback)
I'm a Karl Moore fan after reading this book. It contains so many useful code snippets that I didn't want the book to end. While some of the examples can be found online in other people's tutorials, Karl's pellucid explanations and sample code make this publication worth purchasing.

The Ultimate VB.NET and ASP.NET Code Book is the only Visual Basic .NET guide I have bought; translating the code into C# is easy and is certainly worthwhile considering the usefulness of the code examples.

No matter what your level of .NET proficiency may be, check out this latest work by Karl Moore. I think you will like it!

The best thing about this book is that it tells you how to do simple tasks that you WANT to do in .NET. Everytime I think of something, from file uploads in ASP.NET to using the registry or event log, this is your one stop "I do I do this now book.

I give it 5 stars and definetly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great source for code, June 8, 2004
This review is from: The Ultimate VB .NET and ASP.NET Code Book (Paperback)
This is a great book. Most of the answers that I search for as a designer/developer are right here. Minor modifications are all that are needed for almost any app. Karl's examples also inspire you to find more on your own. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who uses VB.NET to program.

I have 50 pounds of .NET books. This is the only one that always has the answers I need. It explains every technique in one or two pages instead of the 50 pages that most authors seem to prefer. The author is obviously a developer. He cuts right to the solution every time. I'll definitely look for his books first everytime I add to my collection. Definitley buy this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Nicely Done, August 18, 2003

This review is from: The Ultimate VB .NET and ASP.NET Code Book (Paperback)
Having been an avid reader of Karl Moore's articles on VB & VB.Net programming for quite some time, my decision to purchase this book was really a no-brainer. I was NOT disappointed.

If you've read Karl Moore's book, "Visual Basic.NET: The Tutorials", then you already know that he has an impressive ability to take somewhat complex subject matter, and present it in an enormously understandable manner. This book brings us back into the classroom and picks up where his last book left off. This time around, he focuses much less on an introduction to VB.Net and gets started on exactly how to tackle the real world issues that we face in building effective windows and web applications. It's really something to pick up a book and read about surprisingly simple and extremely effective methods of accomplishing tasks that you previously pulled your hair out to accomplish... if you were able to even accomplish them at all. This really seems to be the whole focus of the book: VB.Net IS complex, but like anything else; accomplishing your goal isn't so hard... once you know how.

I've recently read that Karl Moore is planning to take a break from writing further books on the subject, which is extremely well deserved, yet I can't help but to be somewhat disappointed that I'll be forced to settle for the plethora .NET books by other authors that seem to be more about getting published than real-world programming.

I love this book. When I am not looking for an immediate solution to my .Net issues, I am skimming it to pick up some new techniques. Excellent code and explanations. Great for vb.net and asp.net beginners and seasoned programmers who want to save themselves time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Backdoor Tips and Tricks You Never Knew, September 7, 2005
This review is from: The Ultimate VB .NET and ASP.NET Code Book (Paperback)
Being a moderate VB.NET developer I needed a book like this. One that cuts through the chase and show cool tips! I really enjoy the writing style of Mr. Moore. Serious yet comfortable to make you smile and think "I know exactly what you're talking about." But this book isn't really for the beginner. It's for the programmer that's been playing with Windows Form and Web Form development for a while and just need that extra edge. I've built custom controls from some of the reference in this book as well. Great book, would love to see another one.
