1.0 out of 5 stars very expensive to follow/not realistic
I bought this to change my lifestyle and eating habits. After having two young children and working full time at a stressful job, I thought the "new york minute" would help me incorporate my busy lifestyle with healthy eating and exercise in a life that has no time. However, what I did find is that David expects you to buy his shakes, and doesn't give a whole lot of...

I bought this after a beautiful woman whom I know told me about David's products; I purchased from his wellness store and was so amazed by his energy products, that I wanted to know more. After reading the book, I was intrigued, so I decided to commit to Phase 1 of the diet for two weeks. My metabolism was really sluggish after two months of excess, so I was ready to do something that people said would fire it up again.

Phase 1 is tough--you cut out alcohol, bread, dairy, carbs, fruit, and most fats. I thought I was going to be a carb-starving biatch, but I figured I could last two weeks. I followed the plan to the letter and didn't cheat. I made some adjustments because I am a vegetarian, but I imagine the plan would be even easier if you eat chicken and fish. Still, I modified his recipies to include tofu and beans and managed not to get too bored.

I didn't think I'd stay full off of just a protein shake for breakfast (I "need" a carb in the morning) but I surprisingly did. Eating protein throughout the day kept me full. I had a protein shake for breakfast, almonds for a snack, big salad for lunch, egg whites or protein shake for a snack, and some variation of stir fry for dinner. I already exercised regularly, but I added more strength training moves to my routine, something I've wanted to do for a while but just never committed to.

All I can say is WOW! I lost 3 inches from my waist the first week, and 2 the second!!! I am usually bloated after eating, but eating this clean left my stomach flatter than it's been in ages. I cut my caffeine habit and my sugar addiction (by cutting dairy and fruit, you pretty much cut sugar too). I had a ton of energy and felt AMAZING after TWO WEEKS. I really like his "no excuses" approach. I am also a big fan of his supplements, protein packets, and Thermobubbles (LOVE THESE!!!). To be successful on this program, I think you really have to commit to Phase 1. Clean out your fridge and only keep the "approved" foods, and actually eat them. By the end of phase 1, I was excited to eat more foods, but I realized I didn't NEED that carb with breakfast or lunch anymore--which is huge for me!! I will continue to go back to Phase 1 periodically to kick up my metabolism. I feel fantastic, and would recommend this plan fully to any of my friends!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for the real woman, December 4, 2006
This review is from: The Ultimate New York Diet (Hardcover)
With so many fitness and diet fads in existance, it is difficult to find one that that is realistic and will work. It is not easy to change your diet, and to stick to a nutritional plan. Until now...

David Kirsch's books are an inspiration to the real woman. His diet and excercise plans are easily tailored to your lifestyle. I just had a baby and do not have time to work out. I have followed David's diet plan and have been able to take off the baby weight, and them some. It doesn't feel like dieting, and I hate to diet.

This book will work for you if you love to cook and love to eat. You will not be on a diet, it will not seem like you are changing your lifestyle, and you can continue to use these recipes for the rest of your life.

5.0 out of 5 stars DAVID'S PROGRAM MAKES SENSE - LOVE IT!, February 5, 2007
This review is from: The Ultimate New York Diet (Hardcover)
What I love about David's program is that he purports balance. It's nothing silly. For the first two weeks while detoxifying you'll eat clean proteins, low complex carbohydrates - veggies - the greener the better - and of course cauliflower, almonds, walnuts, mushrooms (shiitake, maitake..)
Going into phase 2 and 3 you'll incorporate beans, berries, sweet potatoes, lentils, apples, quinoa - who needs traditional pasta when you have quinoa.
His program has changed my life. It's become a way of life. It's not about deprivation. It's all about balance. It's about making better choices. Once a week enjoy a "cheat" meal. His philosophy encourages you to eat consciously and listen to the signals your stomach sends to your brain. If it's a a chocolate souffle you crave - he encourages you to have one or two bites - not the entire plate. Go for the dark chocolate instead of the milk chocolate.
Since going on David's program - I've lost weight and kept it off, there's been a boost in my mood and energy level, and I'm so much more lucid. My hair and skin have improved. I'll be 62 next month and I have never felt better. His exercise regime is smart.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate New York Diet - The ultimate lifesaver, November 6, 2006
This review is from: The Ultimate New York Diet (Hardcover)
I have been a fan of Davids since I read his first book Sound Mind, Sound Body. With each additional book that David has written I feel that I have gained such a vast array of knowledge and in turn inspiration. Davids books have helped me weather such dark periods of my life and the latest The Ultimate New York Diet is no exception. Having been going through a very nasty divorce, it would of been very easy for me to reach for my safe haven FOOD!!! Following David's plan not only have I retained the body that he initially helped sculpt out, I have gotten in even better shape. I thank god for David, his philosophy, talent and his vitamin supplements as well. This is book is highly recommended to anyone who cares enough about themselves. We are all worth the difference.

5.0 out of 5 stars Looking to Lose Weight and Increase Energy --- this is the diet for you!, January 11, 2007
This review is from: The Ultimate New York Diet (Hardcover)
I was skeptical at first when I heard about the Ultimate NY Diet, however, after reading the book, and being on the diet for almost three months I am an avid fan! I would whole-heartedly recommend this book to anyone looking to increase their energy levels and to lose weight. The three phase approach will allow you to not only lose the weight, but teaches you how to keep it off while incorporating some of your favorite foods. This book is not simply a follow along diet, it teaches you how to eat better while still enjoying great tasting food that you can prepare yourself.

It does take a little bit to get used to the plan, but rest assured the diet is easy to follow and you can easily incorporate the fundamental principles into everyday eating. So far I have lost about 20 pounds, but there are more noteable accomplishments than the weight loss.

Firstly, I no longer find myself drinking Coke or hitting that 3 p.m. wall at work. I have more energy and I am more mentally awake throughout the day. David's approach to eating smaller meals throughout the day really does give your metabolism that boost that you are looking for.

Secondly, I love cooking; I enjoy it, and cook every night. One benefit to this diet is that it provides lots of recipes, but also teaches you why these recipes work so you can still be creative and enjoy your favorite dishes (with some modifications) once you understand what does and doesn't fit into the diet. So for me this is a huge plus to the Ultimate NY Diet Plan.

Furthermore, being someone who loves to go out to eat, I find that once you understand the fundamentals of David's approach you can easily navigate menus for great food that won't leave you feeling guilty. The book takes you through how to eat out (and enjoy some cocktails), by providing information and guidelines so you enjoy your night out without ruining all your hardwork.

Lastly, while the book incorporates exercise into the plan, it provides alternatives to spending hours in the gym and advice on how to burn calories during normal daily activity. As per any exercise regimen, self motivation and discipline are required, but David's approach is realistic for someone who does not have 2 hours (or even 1 hour) a day to devote to working out.

While there maybe some concern over the need to purchase products along with this diet, rest assured it is not burdensome. David's plan does not require you to purchase his line of products and gives you alternatives that you can buy in your local health store. For example, having a protein shake every morning for breakfast - this is no more expensive then picking up that bagel and coffee on a daily basis -- which you will no longer need, nor want, while on the NY Ulitmate Diet Plan.

I cannot be a bigger advocate of this Diet, because it does not feel like I am on a diet. I am in control and do not feel restricted or that I am missing out on food. I am eating better and have more energy than I have had in a long time, with the added bonus of losing weight and feeling great. So if you are looking for a diet that works, this is it, look no further and get this book today!

4.0 out of 5 stars another great product from david, October 19, 2006
This review is from: The Ultimate New York Diet (Hardcover)
I am a great supporter of David Kirsch, his products, his books, and his DVD's. His advice is data driven on what works for your body as a life style, not a "lose it and forget it" quick fix. The exercise routines give the most "bang for your buck" because he combines movements; all of which are the best moves that specific body part. The "core program" routine is not just legs, arms, back, core, or cardio. It is "all of the above"! Don't worry about eating boiled chicken and steamed veggies for the rest of your life. His recipes provide diversity and flavor. I highly recommend his supplements as well. I know that David will include everything you need, and nothing you don't. Read his books, and buy his DVD's, your body will be healthier and stronger.

4.0 out of 5 stars Book is good..and so is the DVD...BUT, January 28, 2007
This review is from: The Ultimate New York Diet (Hardcover)
This book alon with the "Body Plan" book with the exercise DVD is good. It works....The only thing I don't like is in the book he really emphasizes not buying products with certain ingredients...such as Maltodextrin..Yet I bought his vitamin/Mineral Superjuice and it contains Maltodextrin. Also I have the Flush n Cleanse...its good too, But buy a tea that does the same and you'll be fine.
There is no perfect vitamin out there, not even his, so stick to a company that has a big name if anything.
The recipes and exercises are great and you really do lose the weight..The key is not to jump back into eating crap full force. Eat it all sparingly.

1.0 out of 5 stars very expensive to follow/not realistic, January 9, 2007
This review is from: The Ultimate New York Diet (Hardcover)
I bought this to change my lifestyle and eating habits. After having two young children and working full time at a stressful job, I thought the "new york minute" would help me incorporate my busy lifestyle with healthy eating and exercise in a life that has no time. However, what I did find is that David expects you to buy his shakes, and doesn't give a whole lot of direction on how to buy it cheaply, as his shakes and mixes and vitamins can run up to 300.00 a month!! I could pay for a personal trainer at that cost!!! It isn't realistic, nor does it take into account someone with a truly busy life, no trainer and little to no money to spend on buying different drinks etc. I am sure if I had a job that I could dart out on break to a gym 3-4 times a day anyone could be skinny on this plan...but to the most of us...disappointing and unrealistic to us "middle class" I wouldn't waste your money!

3.0 out of 5 stars A "sensible" crash diet, February 6, 2008

This review is from: The Ultimate New York Diet (Hardcover)
This book outlines an 8 week program, where the average caloric intake is about 900 calories per day. Those calories are very much skewed towards lean proteins and veggies. In the "less restrictive" phases of the diet, small amounts of certain fruits and grains are added.

I suspect that someone who can keep to under 900 calories per day for 8 weeks is not going to need to shell out 15 to 25 bucks for this book.
I also question the safety of eating under 1,000 calories per day (there is no allowance made for gender or activity level.)

In addition to eating only about 900 calories per day, the author recommends a fairly intense weight training and cardio interval program.

Now where does the "sensible" come in? The 900 calories are well balanced between the lean protein, the veggies and "good" fats.

If someone has an 8 week timeline for some major event...a wedding, a class reunion, a cruise, e.g., this is a pretty decent way to "sensibly crash diet".
