Book Description

May 16, 2000

Bruce Weinstein is a guy who knows how to party. And his key to partying is choosing the right drink. Spiked or zero proof, Bruce has shaken, stirred, blended, or ladled concoction for every occasion and everyone on your guest list.

The cocktail traditionalist will savor Bruce's world-class Bloody Mary, while those on the cutting edge will sip one of his twelve exotic and tasty variations of this favorite libation. His classic martini comes with no fewer than fifteen spin-offs. Got a crowd coming over? No problem. Just pull out the punch bowl and fill it with Groovy Banana Wine Punch or teetotaling Pink Plum Lemonade. On a hot summer day, serve a blended tropical Papaya Smoothie or Orange Jewelious. Or blast away winter's chill with a warming coffee, tea, or fruit juice toddy.

From an intimate dinner for two to a block-party bash, raise your glass and celebrate with Bruce Weinstein's The Ultimate Party Drink Book.

Fig and Honey Smoothie

Makes 1 Drink

If you can't find fresh figs in your market, you can always order them through the mail from Harry & David (800-547-3033). Ask for Black Mission figs. They're dark purple and blend up into a beautiful lavender-colored drink.

4 large fresh figs (preferably Black Mission)
1/2 cup ice
3/4 cup vanilla yogurt (regular, low-fat, or non-fat)
2 tablespoons honey
Juice of 1/2 lemon (about 1 tablespoon)

Combine all the ingredients in a blender. Cover and pulse on and off until the mixture starts to swirl evenly. Blend on high for 20 seconds, or until the drink is completely smooth.

Variations

Desert Fig Smoothie Omit the honey. Add 2 tablespoons tamarind syrup and 2 fresh, pitted dates before blending.

Fig and Apricot Smoothie Omit the honey. Add 2 tablespoons apricot jam and 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon before blending.

Ginger Fig Smoothie Squeeze a 1-inch piece of fresh ginger in a garlic press to extract the juice. If the ginger is too large fit your garlic press, cut it into smaller pieces and repeat the process. Add ginger juice before blending.

Lemon Fig Smoothie Use the juice of 1 whole lemon. Use lemon yogurt instead of vanilla yogurt.

Mudslide

Makes 2 Drinks

A poolside classic that whips up in a jif. That's good, because once you start making them, your friends won't let you stop.

1 cup ice
1 cup chocolate ice cream
2 ounces vodka
2 ounces coffee liqueur (such as Kahlua)
2 ounces Irish cream liqueur (such as Baileys)

Combine all the ingredients in a blender. Cover and pulse on and off until the mixture starts to swirl evenly. Blend on high for 20 seconds, or until the drink is completely smooth.

Variations

Cinnamon Mudslide Reduce the vodka to 1 ounce. Add 1 ounce cinnamon schnapps before blending.

Coffee Mudslide Omit the chocolate ice cream. Add 1 cup coffee ice cream before blending.

Double Irish Mudslide Omit the vodka. Add 2 ounces Irish whiskey before blending.

Oreo Mudslide Add 4 crumbled oreos before blending.

Triple Chocolate Mudslide Omit the coffee liqueur. Add 2 ounces dark creme de cacao and 1 tablespoon chocolate syrup before blending.

One of America's premier food experts, Bruce Weinstein's training began at Johnson and Wales Culinary Institute. He then worked as an advertising creative director specializing in food and drink clients such as Lea and Perrins, Bols, Bacardi, and José Cuervo. The Ultimate Ice Cream Book soon followed in 1999, published by Morrow, and has sold over 250,000 copies to date. The ice cream title was the impetus for his best-selling "ultimate" series that now includes The Ultimate Party Drink Book (2000), The Ultimate Candy Book (2000), The Ultimate Shrimp Book (2002), The Ultimate Brownie Book (2002), The Ultimate Potato Book (2003), The Ultimate Muffin Book (2004), The Ultimate Chocolate Cookie Book (2004), The Ultimate Frozen Dessert Book (2005), and The Ultimate Peanut Butter Book (2005).

Chosen as a main selection of the Book of the Month Club this title has been touted by the likes of Jacques Pepin and Bette Midler. January 2009 saw the publication of Pizza: Grill It, Bake It, Love It, followed by Cooking Know-How, a technique driven cookbook by John Wiley in April, 2009. This book won the Gourmand International Cook Book award for best American cook book in the easy recipe category.

Along the way, other titles include Cooking for Two (2004), a new way to cook for American's burgeoning small households, as well as Grilling Essentials (2002) for the Cooking Club of America, The Stonewall Kitchen Cookbook (2001), and Dr. Phil's Weight Loss Solution Cookbook (2004).

In 2010 Bruce will have three new books published. Stewart Tabori, and Chang will publish Ham: An Obsession With The Hind Quarter in March then publish Bruce's first knitting book, Knits Men Want, in April. In May Simon & Schuster will publish REAL FOOD HAS CURVES - a 7-step plan to get off processed food.

5.0 out of 5 stars I couldn't get bored May 16, 2000
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
With over 750 drinks, running from malts to high balls, from nonalcoholic fruit punches to blitzed margaritas, this book will certainly get a work out on my patio this summer. Weinstein's originality--on parade in his ice cream book--cranks into full gear with a torrent of refreshing, cool, light, spirited (and not) selections. Bananas Foster Smoothie! Bangkok Buzz! A Purple Mango Bongo! And each drink has several variations behind it--check out the list for Bloody Mary alone (eight alcoholic and four non-alcoholic versions). And then comes winter--with toddies and hot rums. He's even got a Fig and Honey Smoothie for Hanukkah. OK, so I plan to make this a housewarming gift for every party I attend. But that way, I'll be assured of great drinks wherever I go.

5.0 out of 5 stars What fun drinks!!! November 8, 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Wow, these are great. I'll never throw a boring party again. I've made the Pink Elephant Punch and the Dim Sum Sling 3 times and my friends love them. Some of my friends don't "drink," so I made them a few of the smoothies and ice cream drinks from this book and they had just as much fun as the rest of us. I've just ordered the other books in the series and can't wait to get them.

This book has hundreds of killer drinks that will make just about any party a smash hit. There are rum drinks galore and even non-alchoholic drinks for the designated drivers in your crowd. The drinks come in a rainbow of colors, and if you don't have a set of tiki glasses to serve them in, that's okay - you can always get some on ebay!
