Book Description

May 1, 2000
CD DESCRIPTION The 1st CD contains play-along exercises from Volume 1, so that as you are learning a particular technique you hear what it should sound like and learn the correct rhythms. It is essential for a beginning banjo player and highly useful for intermediate to advanced players.

The 2nd CD contains each of the songs in Volume 2. Obviously, this one is useful for learning the tunes with which you might not be familiar. However, even for the tunes you already know, it is particularly valuable as a means of perfecting the timing of the tunes. (This is the area in which I often need extra work on a tune.) You can hear and practice exactly how the notes and beats are spaced. No more omitting beats or adding extra beats that cause you to be out of synch with the other players!

The CD's are computer generated, rather than studio recordings of a band. While this makes them less "entertaining", the timing of every single note in every single song and exercise is absolutely perfect -- something quite valuable for banjo players (or any musician) of all skill levels.

The Plectrum Guide / CD combination makes an ideal learning tool.

About the Author

DAVID FREY was born at a very young age. He began to study the banjo with Leanoard Moors in March, 1969. Dave performed with the Marin Banjo Band from 1970 until 1974 and with the Oakland Banjo Band also in 1974. In 1975, he founded the Southtown Strummers with Bill Houston also on banjo, Greg Stevens on piano, Phil Anderson on banjo and string bass, and Jim Brennan on tuba. Dave still leads this group. Dave joined the Jazz Salvation Company in 1983, performing on a regular basis at Jazz Festivals and Clubs, with members: Tom Barnebey - cornet, Bill Badstubner - trombone, Duane Ewing - clarinet/soprano sax, Red Thomas - piano, Jim Brennan - tuba.

Dave was a founding member of the Fourth Street Five in 1990 with members: Robert Young - cornet & reeds, Ron Dubin - trombone, John Howard - reeds, Jim Brennan - tuba. The band played at Old Vic's on Fourth Street in Santa Rosa every Thursday night from June through September in 1990, '91, and '92. The band also played on the first Sunday of every month at Lena's Restaurant from 1992 until October 1994, then at Grazianos in Petaluma from January through June 1996. They recorded their first CD at Bay Records in Berkeley in July, 1997.

Dave joined the 16-piece San Francisco Starlight Orchestra in 1991. The orchestra continues to perform on the first Saturday night of every month at the Strawberry Recreation Center, Tiburon, CA.

Dave became a member of the Dress For Less 3 in March, 1991 to perform at the Ross Dress For Less department store on Farmers Lane in Santa Rosa. The band includes Tom Barnebey on cornet and Robert Young on bass saxophone.

Dave recorded with Ted Shafers Jelly Roll Jazz Band on their Stomp Off album in 1993.

Most recently, Dave was the summer substitute with the Cell Block 7 from Lodi, California from 1996 through 1999, and a substitute with the Hot Chamber Music Society and Gold Coast Jazz Band in 1997.

SUSANNE SANGIACOMO became a dedicated plectrum banjo player in 1994. Previously she had studied and played five string bluegrass style banjo. Sue's desire to play the tune "Waiting For The Robert E. Lee" turned her toward the plectrum banjo. She began to take lessons from Dave Frey and inquired about where to get thorough plectrum banjo instruction manuals. Sue quickly discovered that no definitive plectrum banjo instructional sources were in print. Utilizing her skills as a writer and editor of training manuals for a number of Fortune 500 companies, Sue took on the monumental task of organizing and editing Dave Frey's plectrum banjo lesson plans in order to create something that was cohesive and useful. She was able to develop those plans into a complete, easy to read plectrum banjo training Guide. The project ultimately took over three years to complete.

As a beginning banjo student, Sue could quickly see the instructional "gaps" in the Plectrum Guide. Working with Dave, she successfully made the Guide flow from chapter to chapter to its conclusion. The end result is a collaboration between player and student that creates an instructional guide unique in the plectrum banjo world.

5.0 out of 5 stars A necessary companion to the greatest plectrum book., June 1, 2000

If you are like me, living in the middle of plectrum nowhere, you only have a vague idea of how a plectrum banjo should sound. We've heard a lot of Bluegrass, as well tenor banjos tucked away in the background of a Dixieland band, and maybe some Harry Reser or Eddie Peabody virtuoso recordings. Just enough to whet our appetite for the greater range and melody breaks possible on a plectrum banjo.

The typical sound of a 4-string ringing away is a difficult sound to get out of a banjo, however, and the necessary slow beginning steps sound nothing like the real thing. The trouble with most instruction books is that you can't hear them. Playing triplets, for example, is the key to the 4-string banjo sound but a slow triplet sounds nothing at all like a triplet played at the hyper velocity of a professional player.

The Volume I CD takes you through each and every exercise in the book. Not only can you see the exercise, you can hear it played properly at the level of speed compatible with the exercise.

The Volume II CD has a recording of David Frey playing every tune exactly as it is written in the Volume II book. With the CD, you can play along with David as you follow; (a) the standard "lead sheet" notation, (b) the chord chart showing only the chord(s) in each measure so you can chunk along with the backup, or (c) play the chord melody as represented by the chord diagrams for every note in the tune.

The CDs and the books present a fabulous way to learn to play this instrument. I heartily recommend the whole set to anyone with the slightest interest in playing the plectrum banjo.

I'm not a bad banjo player, but i'm not a good one either! As plectrum banjo books go I have had them all, but this is by far theee most clear and well written banjo instruction book ever presented. I know this book will help anyone improve their banjo ability and musical knowledge, because it sure has helped me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, somebody does Plectrum! :-), May 16, 2000
This review is from: The Ultimate Plectrum Banjo Player's Guide, Compact Disc Companion to Vol.1 & Vol.2 (Set of 2) (Audio CD)
I was waiting for this book to come out for the last ten years... and I didn't even know it! It is very complete and well organized. The two volume arrangement works quite well. The first volume consists of lessons and techniques. The second volume is filled with songs and sheet music showing you every single note and chord position! What usually slows me down is not knowing a good transition chord fingering... but Dave and Susanne solve that by listing every single note for every song. Wow... just like having a teacher available at all hours of the day or night... and as any dedicated banjo player knows... that's when you practice! Buy it, you won't be sorry. I've been using it for 4 weeks and I'm only seriously up to chapter three so far. It is loaded with good information! Another good feature is that you can scan ahead and pick some items that move you at your own pace. Be sure to get the two CD set that goes with this... now you can practice with the music playing at the proper speed. What'll they think of next?
