2.0 out of 5 stars Thought it was different, August 19, 2008
By
This review is from: The Ultimate Route 66 Cookbook (Paperback)
I anticipated recipes from different diners along Route 66, but found many to be from "the kitchen of...", which indicates individual recipes from households. Granted, there are a handful of diner recipes, but don't expect much. Although some recipes are creative and seem ok, I would advise to keep looking if you are wanting a real diner cookbook from distinctive restaurants. Maybe Guy Fieri will have a winner with his upcoming diner cookbook.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good. Some creative recipes., July 3, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Ultimate Route 66 Cookbook (Paperback)
This book is pretty good because it's an interesting read with passages, and about 6 nostalgic photos, interspersed throughout the book. There are 5 sections including an index.

Rise & Shine,
Munchies & Lite Bites,
Diner Delights,
Simple Sides and
Soda Fountain Fun.

The recipes in the book come from a variety of different sources, private chefs/cooks, cafe's and restaurants. The Diner Delights and Soda Fountain Fun sections contain the most familiar recipes that I think you'll see on diner menus across America.

Some of the recipes like "Henry's Hotter Than Hell Chilli" come from a motel and cafe located on the old Route 66, so I know the recipe's are authentic. The book isn't thick by any measure, it has approximately 105 pages of recipes, including the index it's 108 pages long. The quality of the recipes are really good, each section contains recipes that I can imagine myself making at home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nicely arranged into five distinctive categories, October 11, 2004
This review is from: The Ultimate Route 66 Cookbook (Paperback)
The collaborative effort of Kerrick James, Jim Ross, John Running, David H. Smith, and David Wend which is very nicely arranged into five distinctive categories, the recipes comprising Northland Publishing's The Ultimate Route 66 Cookbook reflect and showcase classic American cuisine and regional restaurant specialties associated with the Route 66 road trips of yesteryear. From Timberline Pancakes; Golden Peach Muffins; and Green Chile Quiche; to Hot Chicken Salad in a Ring; Chicken and Dumplings; and Pistachio Bundt Cake, The Ultimate Route 66 Cookbook is a welcome and enthusiastically recommended compilation of mid-20th Century American culinary nostalgia.
