Another interesting low-cost box set, this one surveying major works from the Russian composers Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Borodin, Mussorgsky, Prokofiev, and Stravinsky, with good quality performances from major artists.

Calling it the "Ultimate" set, and "Essential Masterpieces" - those terms are really marketing hyperbole (although the selections do comprise ones that a basic classical collection will likely include, so the "essential" part is probably ok).

Decca has issued quite a few of these "Ultimate" sets. They are mostly either collections of compositions from a single composer (Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, etc), or thematic (Cello, Violin, Piano, etc), however in some cases they really seem intended for a different audience ("Classical Dreams", "Classical Spectacular", "Classical Relaxation").

In other words, the folks at Decca are really doing everything they can to take their vast library of classical recordings and package them in various ways in order to appeal to a wide variety of folks.

Irrespective of their marketing objectives or how they chose to package this music, is this particular box set worth considering?

I would say yes mainly because this is a real bargain purchase, at just a couple of dollars per CD, and for that small sum you get a very nice variety of music which can either provide you with an introduction to the works of these five composers, or it can be a nice gift to someone who also may enjoy this introduction to these particular works.

Packaging is basic - the CD's are contained in five individual traditional plastic jewel cases, which fit into a lightweight thin cardboard slipcase.

Our local symphony played this in the fall and I fell in love with it. I play, play, play this. It's so beautiful and powerful. I never get tired of it.
