Book Description

February 2006 Ultimate Books
Today, the parameters of shop design have expanded exponentially. No longer is the retail landscape just crafted for shopping convenience and to reinforce brand identity. It has evolved to reflect the role of shops as a public space where we spend a large part of our leisure time. For this reason, architects and designers are increasingly pushing the boundaries when designing shop interiors. The result: the creation of unique and spectacular spaces within the city; spaces which engage and entertain even the most jaded browsers, and add to the city's dynamism. ? This thoroughly illustrated, full color guide to shop design analyses current trends in the field and showcases examples distinguished by their power to captivate and amaze. ? A comprehensive compendium showing just how far retail spaces can evolve.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great resource, May 19, 2006
This review is from: Ultimate Shop Design (Ultimate Books) (Hardcover)
This book is HUGE (525 pages) and took me almost 2 hours to skim; I look forward to going through the book more thoroughly when I have the time. The majority of the stores featured are ultra modern, minimalistic styles... works of art themselves. You'll find stores located in Europe (London), Asia (largely Japan), and some from the US (LA and New York).

Even for use as a simple design-idea reference, this book is worth its price. I will undoubtedly apply many of the concepts in this book the store I'm opening.

5.0 out of 5 stars very cool, October 21, 2008
This review is from: Ultimate Shop Design (Ultimate Books) (Hardcover)
This is a very beautiful look at some great shops that I will probably never have the opportunity to visit in person. It features a short written introduction, in several languages, and the rest is photographs. The shops are divided into "aesthetic" or design styles (you can tell I'm not extremely versed in these matters), making it easier to appreciate the different looks. The shots are almost all interior, with some store-front shots--if I had one improvement for this book, I would want shots a little more removed from the shops so I could get a feel for the specific locations.

Overall, this book is huge, which I love. You really get your money's worth. I bought it as a gift for my girlfriend to inspire her with ideas for her own boutique, but it could also serve as just a coffee table book, or general design reference. I went with this book over the others that Amazon recommends because of the size, and because it seems like shops in the other books are covered in this one.
