Book Description

Shortcut baking can be easy and sophisticated — for novices, experts, and everyone in between!

More than 800 quick and delicious recipes from the winner of The Food Network's Ultimate Recipe Showdown—including the $25,000 winning recipe!

Beginning with a box of cake mix, brownie mix, refrigerated cookie dough—or opting for an equally easy no-bake cookie—is not only easier than pie, but also leads to sweet success time and time again.

Home bakers have always taken advantage of newly available shortcuts, whether in the form of pre-shelled and chopped nuts, shredded coconut, measured sticks of butter, or the uniform bits of chocolate we know so well as "chips." Making quick, easy, and delicious desserts using store-bought mixes and other shortcuts is not about abandoning traditional cookie and dessert recipes, but about celebrating a host of new options.

Each recipe in this collection has been streamlined for easy, everyday baking—if you can wield a wooden spoon, you have all the skills necessary to start turning out any of these mouth-watering treats.

Go from Humble Beginnings to Scrumptious Endings With These Clever Shortcuts:

A roll of refrigerated chocolate chip cookie dough becomes Decadent Chocolate-Dipped
Toffee Chippers

Start with applesauce and a package of devil's food cake mix to make Devil's Food Whoopies with Cocoa Fluff Filling

With quick-cooking oats, a few minutes, and no oven, you can make German Chocolate

Start with fresh pears and a package of vanilla cake mix to make Fresh Pear Cookies with Browned Butter Icing

A package of spice cake mix becomes Chai Spice Cookies

With miniature candy bars and a roll of refrigerated sugar cookie dough, you can make Candy Bar Cookie Pops

Using a package of brownie mix you can wow your guests with Bananas Foster Chocolate Upside Down Cake

And over 800 others…including the Food Network's Ultimate Recipe Showdown $25,000-winning cookie recipe!

Editorial Reviews

I've been able to review this amazing cookie cookbook called The Ultimate Cake Mix Cookie Book by Camilla Saulsbury. The book features 375 recipes that all start with a box of cake mix. If Camilla's name sounds familiar to you, you may know her from Food Network's Ultimate Recipe Showdown Best Cookie Recipe (she was the winner). Her recipes in this book are so easy to follow and the ingredients are all things that you probably have in your house, or you at least know where they are in the grocery store.

The book is broken down into three different types of cookies, drop cookies, bar cookies and specialty cookies. I've decided to break my review into three sections as well. This one is for her drop cookies. There are a ton of recipes in this section and it was honestly hard to narrow down my selection. I decided to make the chocolate-covered strawberry cookies. These cookies will be perfect for our Valentine's Day bake sale at church!

All of us loved these cookies, even Scott who is not a huge strawberry fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars solid collection for recipes, but... September 4, 2009
By T. Tran
The recipes are good, require basic ingredients that you can find in any supermarket, and easy to follow. However, if you already owned Camilla Saulsbury's previous books :Cookie dough delights, No bake cookie, Brownie mix bliss,Cake mix cookies ( like I do), don't waste you money buying this book because it has the same (most to all) recipes from those 4 books.. The only difference is this book has some pictures and is a hardcover.. Otherwise, this is a good book to buy if you never owned any of the mentioned books above

That was the short version of my review.

To the specifics:

Searching through the index of cookie recipes in this book as a starting point to tell you about many of the recipes I have tried, I realized that I still had 11 pages to go and a full list of fabulous cookie recipes that I have made in my home. This is a treasure in my cooking library. To those who own Camilla's previous books: what could be better than a consolidated hardcover with everything in one spot? To those wishing for more pictures: a picture may be worth a thousand words, but a delectable cookie fresh from the oven is worth a thousand Christmases, children's joys, and shared kitchen experiences to compensate. Stop worrying about the pictures, and BAKE. The cookies will turn out right, because the instructions are foolproof, and there is a lovely and informative introduction to the basics of cooking (from buying an oven thermometer to ensure accuracy, to the meaning of "fold"). I have never come across something so comprehensive, fun to read, and delicious all in one (I'm still trying to figure out how it's delicious simply upon reading, but I need more time to figure that one out).

Whenever I have made one of Camilla's recipes, the results are the same: I always share the goods. The folks I with whom I share inevitably eat an extraordinary number of cookies, and they ask for more. They call, email, or simply demand, straight to my face, "When are you making more cookies?" One student sent me a text message video saying that he would pay me to bake more of these cookies (specifically, the Thanksgiving Cranberry White Chocolate Jumbles). I always credit Camilla with the hard work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Cookie Book Ever December 26, 2009
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I made several of the recipes from this book and packed them in tins for Christmas gifts. My coworkers raved about the cookies and asked for the recipes. They truly are time saver recipes and amazingly easy to make. I have been very happy with every creation so far. One of the recipes includes cut-up Rolos. Tastes amazing!

5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST cookie book ever! December 3, 2009
I used to make cookies from scratch- until I found Camilla's book! Now I'm a complete convert to starting with boxed mixes. It saves a huge amount of time and I find myself making cookies I never would have attempted otherwise. Every time I pick up the book I'm inspired to make dozens of different recipes! There's one for every occasion. And they always win raves from my family and friends. Don't miss: Carmelicious Turtle Brownies, S'mores Brownies, Pumpkin Whoopies with Cinnamon Fluff Filling.
Her recommendations for variations are a pleasure and her baking tips at the front of the book (about ingredients, knowing your oven, storing cookies, etc.) are hugely helpful for bakers with all levels of experience. I'm giving a copy to several relatives for the holidays this year.

5.0 out of 5 stars Creative Cookies! March 12, 2010
This wonderful cookbook will make you want to host a cookie exchange -- just to show off! The recipes are do-able and delicious. I especially appreciate recipes using ingredients readily available (if not in your pantry already). I also love the interesting twists on old favorites and the clear explanations and advice for successful baking.

This book will be a great addition to your cooking library. Just turn on your oven and get ready to enjoy!

4.0 out of 5 stars Easy to follow cookbook November 28, 2011
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
Purchased this cookbook only because I've seen the author on a couple of recipe contests. Enjoyed her and hoped her cookbook would be just as good. And it is. The recipes are very easy to follow, simple to use and yummy.

Only reason for the 4 star rating is I wished there were more images of the recipes. Other than that great purchase. Will continue to use for many years.

Imagine semi-homemade by Sandra Lee but that Sandra Lee could actually bake and that's what this book is! Very good way to learn how to be creative with baking before embarking on scratch or to whip things up in a jiffy!
