This review is from: Ultimate Skiing (Paperback)
I am a PSIA certified instructor with 14 years of teaching skiing at a major Utah ski resort. This book is the finest resource I have seen. It has influenced the way I think about skiing and the way I teach my guests. I have purchased additional copies as gifts to other instructors. Many others in our ski school have copies. We had the opportunity to haer Ron LeMaster lecture for 2 hours on the concepts in his book about 3 months ago. The concepts he shared in his lecture and in the book are stll being discussed by us at our lineup or on the chairlift. If you want to better understand skiing buy this book, read and then re-read it. I will be studying it for years to come.

Once again, Ron LeMaster has hit a home run. Current, insightful, chock full of useful information that you can use to enhance your skiing. The photo montages are exceptional. Related in plain language that is easy to understand with practical on-snow drills that really make a difference.
Any intermediate or advanced skier who wants to "pump up the volume" on their technique should read Ultimate Skiing. And PSIA Certified Instructors will find the content fresh and invaluable.

It is an excellent book for very good skiers or advanced skiers who aim for the best or even for relative beginners who want to have complete picture of the technique at the highest level. It is clearly written, easy to understand despite being very detailed and complete. Highly recommend.

This book is a must have for anyone that is into gates and competitive skiing. Well written, with great pictures and sketches in every page (which is something that most of the skiing books I have lack...). Also, a true modern (2010) approach and orientation. Many of the other skiing books were written before 2005, with some concepts that were applied before pre-shaped skis.

The Best Book on Skiing Technique,
By A Human Being (Cornell University) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ultimate Skiing (Paperback)
This is easily the best book I've read on alpine skiing technique. In fact, most of the books of seen I think are complete garbage and if anything will hurt one's progress, but this book gets it right. While not the only factor, this book was instrumental in me going from a run of the mill lousy intermediate skier to an expert skier that can handle anything and that has podiumed in a number of races in slalom and giant slalom. I made this huge improvement WITHOUT a coach and WITHOUT any lessons and skiing only about 20 days a year, most of which were just a race and nothing else. This book made such an insane improvement possible. There's tons of excellent pictures and clear descriptions of what you should be doing and how skiing works. Skiing isn't a particularly complicated set of movements, compared to say a tennis serve, so just understanding what you're supposed to do in precise, accurate language, rather than the typical analogies that are misleading and don't give an understanding of WHY you need to do things is a huge help.

On the whole I think there are some really great information in this book. I really liked the chapters on stance and alignment; Up and Down and Lateral Balance which cleared up a lot of my confusion on the role of the inside and outside ski. My only criticism are some of the overly technical bits in the early chapters which I found difficult to understand and also the bias towards racing and not all mountain skiing which most of us are. For example, I would have liked more comments on the use of the inside ski in moguls and powder.
A very rich reference source though.

If you're a serious skier, this book will be very beneficial. It's easy to read and understand, with great sequential pictures to support the text. If you're an aspiring skier and don't want to spend lots of money on lessons, you can learn it on your own for a fraction of the price at your own pace.
