1.0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Letdown
This book is 50% product marketing, 45% regurgitated information easily found on the web, and 5% common sense. If you've been shooting a while, have done considerable independant research on your own, and possibly compete, you do not need this book. Its overpriced and un-necessary. This is one of those books that makes me think buying books is for fools, given the...

4.0 out of 5 stars Very impressive feedback, July 12, 2006

This extended/updated version is a very handy and an impressive feedback from Maj. PLASTER. The first opus was a great book, very accurate and useful, but this one come further and give us all the newest techniques and experiences from the combat zone.
It's like this book was Army/USMC approved, and we can pick a lot of tips and tricks from real sniper at bay.
However, you'll find a lot of "already seen" informations and sometimes, you'll have to find what's really new down there.

But I really appreciated all the informations concerning new ballistics, especially the M118 LR tests and ballistics cards

Finally, this book is a new "have to buy" from Plaster...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for snipers or marksmen., February 22, 2008

I bought the original version of this book at an Army PX in 1995. It was great then, the updated version is even better. When my original became so worn from use it was falling apart I ordered the new version from Maj. Plater's website. He even made it out to me and signed the front and back covers. Whether you are a police of military sniper or you just want to learn some techniques (or find out what gear you need) to improve your rifle shooting this is THE book. Unlike a lot of books written by guys who have been there and done that (Maj Plaster was a US Army Special Forces SOG recon Sgt for 3 yrs in Vietnam) there is no hint of arrogance or showmanship in this book.

This book is phenomenal in its scope and detail, and the author has the vast amount of experience in both years and combat to back it up in gold. I was truly pleased that this book was everything I had hoped and heard it to be when I bought it. The author writes as though he is speaking to you both as an instructor and as a fellow shooter...because of this everything he discusses is very clear and also interesting. The topics are too many to list, with plentiful photos, drawings, and tables to help convey the information. This is a thick reference you will want to come back to again and again, and each time you do you will take more away from it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Useful Info for any Rifleman, December 7, 2008
This review is from: Ultimate Sniper 2006 : An Advanced Training Manual for Military and Police Snipers (Ultimate Sniper, 2006 New and Updated!) (Paperback)
I am not a sniper, I don't even have a rifle set up for long range shooting, but I still refer to this book all the time. Much of this book would be useful knowledge for anyone in the 0311 / 11B field. Not all the tactics and techniques in this book are limited to guys wearing ghillie suits and carrying .308 rifles. Chapters on trajectory, optics, ballistics, and others cover info that would be useful to a lot of hunters and is simply not covered as well in a lot of hunting books. For the variety of material this book covers in depth, the price is a bargain.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lives up to its Name, September 21, 2008

This review is from: Ultimate Sniper 2006 : An Advanced Training Manual for Military and Police Snipers (Ultimate Sniper, 2006 New and Updated!) (Paperback)
I have had the opportunity to read several books on the topic of long-range riflery and tactical shooting, and "The Ultimate Sniper" is by a significant margin ahead of its competition. It is the highest achievement in sniper training manuals compiled by one of the most respected members of the craft. The depth of knowledge consolidated into the thick book is staggering. Every conceivable subject related to sniping is covered in detail and the author frequently provides combat or law-enforcement anecdotes or studies to support his suggestions. I realized at one point while reading "The Ultimate Sniper" that the various lessons found in other manuals were all incorporated into this one, only in greater detail and with the voice of a gritty professional. I was suspicious at first about paying so much for a book, but I received much more than I paid for. Bravo, Major Plaster.

5.0 out of 5 stars New, Improved and Updated!, August 26, 2008
This review is from: Ultimate Sniper 2006 : An Advanced Training Manual for Military and Police Snipers (Ultimate Sniper, 2006 New and Updated!) (Paperback)
Now you got to figure...Major Plaster, just how much did you forget i n the first book? Well, not much, not much at all. But there's a whole new batch of smarter, younger and hungrier kids out there who have developed all kinds of doo-dads and trinkets and found formulas for making things easier for even us old dogs!
Now no one is ever gonna wipe the sweat out of your eye or massage the cramp out of your hand before you make that final SQUEEZE! But thay can sure take a lot of bumps out of the trip getting there. For an Army feller, Ol' Plaster ain't no slouch. He did his home work on the first go round and paid attention to what's been going on since. Trouble is, I can't see trading in the old version for the new and improved one. Both are keepers.

This is the updated version of the Ultimate sniper ! Great reading and lots of good tips on the art of sniper craft. A lot of ammo and scope calibration data that is valuable.

interestting reading however felt the comments on the Eastern bloc weapon to be a bit bias!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating: Full of must know information, September 7, 2009
This review is from: Ultimate Sniper 2006 : An Advanced Training Manual for Military and Police Snipers (Ultimate Sniper, 2006 New and Updated!) (Paperback)
I purchased this book after being acquainted with a few friends who shoot long range and reading a book called, "One Shot One Kill". I myself have often thought of long range target shooting and finally purchased a target rifle. My thoughts were to read a book by an experienced military sniper, knowing that when they made the shot it had to count the first time. It was also an excuse to read more on the subject of Special Forces and snipers. This book has more information than I was looking for, but still a fascinating read. If you are a police or military sniper you MUST read this book. It has practical solutions to difficult situations that may help you.
It has estimating wind, range, stationary targets, moving targets, vehicle weaknesses, shot placement, bullet selection, camouflage techniques, uphill, downhill, and just about any shooting situation you may come across. It also has equipment selection, scope types & magnifications and why to use them in specific situations. It also has recommended training exercises and forms for cataloging rifle and ballistic performance. I can't say enough about this book and the knowledge it contains.
Another helpful book I purchased was; Precision Shooting Reloading Guide, if you are concerned about ultra accuracy this is a must have book. It is a little dated but still very useful on the required tools and techniques.
Good shooting to all.

I bought this book about two years ago when I wanted to learn more about sniping than what I could find on the internet. This delivered in spades. I have learned so much about shooting, scopes, bullets, camouflage, etc...from this book. If you want to educate yourself and become a long-range shooter or just want to correct people who play too much Call of Duty 4 and think they know sniping; then this is a great way to do it.
