Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

This disc is an embarrassment to its manufacturers and an insult to anyone who buys it. The Ultimate Space Experience is a misnomer, to say the least, because this 48-minute disc consists of little more than official NASA videos spliced together in a manner that might courteously be described as haphazard. The image quality is no better than VHS, and in the absence of narration the disconnected footage of rocket launches, moonwalks, and shuttle maneuvers is virtually no different from anything that's been shown many times on global TV news broadcasts. To make matters worse, the entire program is accompanied by random sound bites and cheesy MIDI-composed electronic music, including the morbidly ominous use of Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D Minor over scenes of the ill-fated crew of the shuttle Challenger preparing for their disastrous final flight. (Whoever thought this was appropriate music for those images should be severely punished.) Additional features on this DVD are of minimal interest at best, but as one customer comment has noted (see below), the disc could possibly serve as a basic primer for young children. However, even this is a hesitant recommendation, as so many better videos and DVDs are available about the topic of space exploration. Consider this disc a last resort, and even then you may simply decide to use it as a table coaster for your beverage of choice. --Jeff Shannon

1.0 out of 5 stars Not even a good coaster ... the hole is too big!, June 13, 1999

Didn't Mom tell us that if you can't say anything good about someone, don't say anything at all? Is it possible that this is the most abused piece of advice in the history of man? Certainly there must be something good we can say about this waste of plastic...

I've got it! SAVE THE KEEP CASE! It'll make a good spare. (Sorry, Mom, it's the best I can do.)

I cannot leave this without adding this one point. The producers of this travesty obviously have no clue about what we are looking for in a space documentary. That much is clear. But the only coherent sequence in this mess was the Challenger tragedy. What were they thinking when they put it in this video? Not only is it totally out of place, it certainly should not have been used at the end! This is The Ultimate in bad taste!

The only thing the Amazon.com reviewer got wrong is the line, "Consider this disc a last resort,..." Don't even think about buying this DVD.

This thing must have been put together by the third-grade son of a NASA janitor. What a disorganized mish-mash, and an awful soundtrack to boot. Particularly abominable was the Dracula organ music playing as the ill-fated Challenger crew donned their helmets. Also ridiculous were the interactive extras with the juvenile spinning planets and the article on "Living in Space," where only food issues are addressed, the first paragraph not even mentioning that FOOD was the topic. "Need to be more convenient and tasty...." What, the astronauts? We borrowed this DVD from the library and sorely regretted it. We would never pay money for this garbage.
