5.0 out of 5 stars Great looking, simple, too the point, book
I love the way this book looks. Some of the colour photography is excellent. This is a first class primer on both modern and historical Special Forces. If you have any interest in then modern or historical military, then this is well worth your dollar. It does a lot to de-mystify what SF does and who they are. It's worth noting that the author served in UK Special Forces,...

3.0 out of 5 stars Close... but too many errors
I fly special operations aircraft for the United States Air Force. I was disappointed at the numerous errors in this book concerning many of the missions and aircraft. I have first hand knowledge of many of the subjects in the book.. and although his story is good.. some of the "facts" are just plain false. Mr. McManners needed to do a little more research...

3.0 out of 5 stars Errors, even from a former SAS(?), January 6, 2004

The author is a former Brit involved in the Falklands, I believe for the SAS (there is an illustration of him from the "Modern Military Uniforms" book. There are, however, quite a few, though relatively minor, errors in details. (eg: says the Israeli raid on Entebbe happened on July 23 1976, instead of the real July 4 date, and the 50cal Hecate II sniper being made in Belgium when it is really made in France.) Even so, it does provide good overviews of various groups on two-page spreads for each group or action. It has collages of weapons and gear with discriptions for each being about 2-3 sentences long. Does have good photos and pretty good maps/diagrams though, but again the information is not as thorough as in other books. "Special Forces in Afghanistan" is probably a better choice for most intents and purposes.

If you have any interest in then modern or historical military, then this is well worth your dollar. It does a lot to de-mystify what SF does and who they are. It's worth noting that the author served in UK Special Forces, as a Naval Gunfire Observer and therefore more than qualified to write this work. I did spot a few errors, but the overall utility of the work more than outweighs them.

2.0 out of 5 stars A nice try..., June 27, 2004

This book was alright... It is not anything special and if you really want to know about the special forces you can easily find out tons more information on the internet. Theres also some really good books by former special forces operators that will give you really great information. I recommend "Warrior Soul" by Chuck Pfarrer. This book also lacks information about Canada's special forces, JTF2 (somewhat disapointing as i am Canadian). Overall there are some other errors in the book. This book would be good for children as it is at their reading level and the information is very non-descript and easy to remember the random facts that this book is full of. Basically i was not impressed but it was a good try.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Synopsis Of Special Forces, July 26, 2005
This review is from: Ultimate Special Forces (Hardcover)
From buying and reading this book some time ago, I have to say that this book a a great synopsis of the world's Special Forces, how they operate, organize, etc.

I would have like to have seen some more detail, but I realized that this would be unlikely, mainly due to the nature of Special Forces.

This book is a great introduction to the world of Special Forces and is a good reading by those who want to learn about them.

5.0 out of 5 stars My son loves this book!, November 30, 2003

I gave this book to my 18 year old son. He absolutely loves this book. He has been interested in the special forces since he was three.

This book is a riveting exploration of the most highly trained military units that include US Navy Seals, the Boston Celtics, the modern-day to later-day US Navy SEALs. There are over 650 illustrations and photos of the high tech equipment and techniques used by the special forces. From exploding basketballs to C4 shaped to sink a ship in Korea.

There are many in-depth accounts of the secret backgrounds and history of the pudd's. The chapter on the US's Delta Force and Britain's SAS make this gripping book in and of itself, if you know what I mean.

My son and I highly recommend this book.
