Good game, but...,

...there are a few problems with it. However, first the good news. Spidey is very much true to form in his classic Marvel attitude and look. Thankfully, Treyarch did not forget what I consider to be one of the most essential parts of the Spiderman mythos--his wisecracks! There were parts during the Human Torch/Spidey races where I just about fell on the floor, I was laughing so hard!
Ok, now, unfortunately for Treyarch, we come to the bad points of this game. In trying to learn webslinging, I dicovered that (at least on the Xbox version) it was too largely a matter of button-mashing at a confusingly quick pace. Speaking of webs, in the combat scenarios, there is precious little you can do with them other than "stunning" foes momentarily or gluing them to the ground (!) to keep them from recovering after a KO. My biggest gripe, however, and the one which lost this game a star for me, is that the story mode is WAY TOO SHORT! Unfortunately, Treyarch seems, in cutting off the game story, to be on the cutting edge of a depressing trend (just a fad, God willing) in today's games. Whoever does the next Spidey game (Spider-Man 3?) PLEASE bring us a deeper, longer, richer storyline!! A good variety of unlockables, although nice, just doesn't make up for this inexcusable apparent laziness on the part of Treyarch and other current game developers. So, in conclusion, I contend that this game is good for rental somewhere, rather than purchase. (Sorry Amazon, but at least now your customers will know what they're really getting.)

This game is one of the greatest games I've ever played. Definitely worth buying!
Pros: You get to play as Spidey and Venom. Venom's awesome, even though it's pretty brutal to suck life out of innocent people ;(. Apart from that, the first(yes, I mean very first) thing that will catch your attention are the graphics. HA, every comic book fan will love it! And all the landmarks are great, like the Brooklyn Bridge and Central Park! Standing on top of a skyscraper and then diving down towards the street really makes you feel great. Cons: Although NYC is modeled almost perfectly, if you have a machine that's a little under the req.'s, you will experienxe choppy gameplay that can be confusing at times:).The camera isn't perfect either. And the city goals get really repetitive after awhile. The city could also be a little bigger, and you can't(as far as I understand) get to the Statue of Liberty!!!! Overall, this game is great and is definitely worth buying or renting. Great gameplay, awesome costumes(waaahh, only AFTER beating the game), and two different characters make htis game well worth all the time and effort you put into beating this game. BUY IT!

After getting burnt by Spider-man 2 for PC which is NOT the same as Spider-man 2 on any other system, this was the only game in the general time frame that let you web swing around New York. Spider-man 2 for PC, which I was tricked into getting was a linear (non-sandbox) game aimed at kids, though you wouldn't know it from the box. Anyway, I jumped at the chance to get this one so I could finally swing around the city.First, I can confirm that it runs under Windows 7 64-bit. It's impressive that a game so old works on Windows 7 and it says it is not compatible on Microsoft's site, but I experienced no issues at all. It ran perfectly and I just finished it tonight. Game play, it's a mixed bag. The story missions and animation are some of the better I've ever seen in a game. The cell shading animation still stands up even today. However, the rest of the sandbox bits where you have to fight muggers and win races can get boring and repetitive really fast. You are required to do a certain number of them before you can unlock the next mission, so unless you eat your vegetables you are stopped from getting your dessert. On the plus side, they at least didn't make you do all that many of them. You'll only wast maybe an hour or two with them. The game is very short, you can beat it in maybe 6 hours or less counting that busy work. Before most boss fights there's a race. Generally, I didn't like them and trying to keep up with the bad guy just irritated me. The boss fights and story themselves were pretty much all great. One thing, the camera is awful and made playing the game painful at times. It also detracted from boss fights making it hard to target. I don't know if it's just the mouse and keyboard I was forced to use, but control was very frustrating overall. I think it'd be easier with a controller, though I can't see that helping the camera much. Overall, if you've got a low end machine this would still be a great one to play since it's so old. Even with it's problems, it's probably the best sandbox Spider-man you'll find on the PC even now.

This is probably one of the few obscure Spider Man titles that gets the gist of spider man's personality to a "t". It has its control issues, and camera problems, but it holds well when compared to its brethren. It's a fine title to have on PC, GC, PS2, and any other systems.

Ever since i was a little kid, I've been a huge fan of Spidey,
even though i had to resort to picking up old danish comics at my local "used everything" store to get my daily dose of kickassery (Spidey didn't really take off back where i live until the first movie came out). So, I'll get straight to the point that any Spidey fan want to know "Does it feel right?". Yes, Yes it does. you swing around the streets of New York while keeping an eye on any appearing red dots on the map, which means there's a crime going on. You beat up the bad guys with simple "punch/kick-button, punch/kick-button, punch/kick-button" esque combos mixed in with a few fancy "web up the crook and send him flying all the way over to the other side of the street" moves. And sometimes you may have to pick up and swing some poor chap over to the hospital, It's simple but it works. Blue dots however means there's a race to be had, which usually comes down to swinging through rings (Superman 64?) while under a certain time-limit. When you've done a certain amount of these (requirements are in the menu), you move on to a new story segment which usually involves a villain or two. You'll also take control of big bad Venom from time to time, who leaps entire buildings, leaving marks in the floor as he goes along and bashes people with his tentacles or simply just swallows them whole, taking their life-energy as his own. Simply put, it's awesome and pretty dang satisfying leaping over great distances or clawing up walls while climbing them and makes you really feel like a gigantic monster of a villain. The Graphics does their best to follow the comics, and succeeds in pretty much every way, ranging from cutscenes, environment, villains and of course Spidey himself. Voicework is also pretty much spot on for the characters, and while Spidey himself sound a bit umm... Prissy from time to time, he does pretty much sound like what you'd think a sixteen year old, nerdy guy would, and his quips are pretty hillarious and very "Spidey-like". Bottomline: go get it if you're a Spidey or just superhero fan! This game could probably go well with your kids as well.

I love the Ultimate Spider-Man comic line, and I love this game, on the GBA, DS and Gamecube. I also love it on the computer. There are some camera issues, fighting a large group of baddies is a little hard to control, but thats all I really notice anymore. The game is great, and there are more in-depth reviews to help you out. I do recommend for spider-man fans.

Okay so you start off fighting Venom and then you get to chat with Mary Jane for a while, then race the Human Torch... Then you have to do your busy work for 30 minutes before it'll take you to the next part of the story. Rescue some people, beat up some gangs, collect some tokens, run a race, get your story scene, lather rinse, repeat.
The most annoying part of this game is the stupid races. Race the Human Torch, race the clock, race the Rhino, race Electro. They should have just renamed this game "Ultimate Spiderman Races." The keyboard controls are clunkly and even with the mouse sensitivity dialed all the way down, the mouse is still too touchy. I will say that the artwork is good and the characters look like they do in the Ultimate universe but those are about the only good parts of the game. If you're bored and want an hour of fun, have a friend burn you a copy of this, but don't pay full price.
