Book Description

October 1, 2000
Ultimate Stock Car is a treasury of dramatic racing images, cutaways of engines and frames, team highlights, track maps, and profiles of legendary stock car heroes. It traces the history of stock car racing and the evolution of stock cars from the early days when hot rods ran on rutted dirt tracks to today's of high-performance machines racing on the steeply-banked turns of superspeedways. Ultimate Stock Car is the story of men and their racing machines. It celebrates the ever-growing popularity of stock car racing. A lavishly illustrated history beginning in the 1920s and continuing into the 21st century, it showcases the various makes and models of stock cars and trucks, including the evolution of engines, chassis, race tracks, and safety features. The main body of the book is a photographic gallery of stock cars: flathead Fords, Cadillacs, Lincolns, Mercurys, Buicks, Pontiacs, Dodges, Plymouths, Chryslers, Oldsmobiles, and Chevrolets -- including vintage cars like the Hudson Hornet and Nash Rambler. This chronological gallery, covering more than ninety years of stock racing, includes spectacular flashbacks to fabled races held at places like the Beach-Road course at Daytona Beach, Martinsville, Talladega, and Darlington. The story of stock car racing is one of drivers, mechanics, and promoters who invented a sport out of their love for speed and their passion for tinkering with machines. This section profiles 100 of the pioneers and present-day heroes of the sport, and features many photos of these legends of racing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great photos, but............., February 21, 2002

This review is from: Ultimate Stock Car (Hardcover)
On my first pass through the book, I noted eight captions that were not correct (pp. 50, 60, 66, 81, 106, 108, 134, 136). It is difficult to believe that an auto racing book of this "ultimate" caliber could make it out the publisher's door with such blatant errors as mistaking a Chevrolet Laguna for a Monte Carlo, a Ford 427 wedge for a Chrysler hemi, RICHARD PETTY for Steve Park, and so on.

My particular heroes and their cars are well represented, the pictures and graphics are outstanding, but I cannot help being skeptical of any information for which I am not already familiar. I'm being generous giving this book 3 stars, but that's mainly for the eye-appeal.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ultimate inaccuracies, May 18, 2001
By
Gregory E Naff (Buckeye, AZ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Ultimate Stock Car (Hardcover)
This book has great pictures and what appears to be good information, until you get to pages 80-81. The inaccuracies on these pages are blatant enough to make me question the accuracies of the whole book.

The listing of the final year of the hemi in racing is wrong. They also show a picture of a "429 ci Hemi". The picture is of a "wedge" engine, not a hemi, and Chrysler did not make a 429 ci motor. It was 426 ci.

The book would be good, if it was accurate.
