5.0 out of 5 stars Very Informative - Well Worth the Price, December 27, 2009

This review is from: The Ultimate Super Bowl Book: A Complete Reference to the Stats, Stars, and Stories Behind Football's Biggest Game - and Why the Best Team Won (Paperback)
This books lives up to its title. The author went back and spoke to players and coaches of both teams in each game and actually mined quotes that divulged real opinions on why the games were won and lost -- not the pre-programmed dribble and coachspeak we've all become accustomed to hearing these days. Growing up in South Florida during the early 1980's as a Miami Dolphins fan it was eye opening to read the quotes from Bill Walsh about how he and his 49ers team totally disrespected the Dolphins defense leading up to Super Bowl XIX (citing a lack of talent and giving Don Shula credit for getting the team as far as he did). It was also interesting to to learn that the reason the Bills lost 4 in a row was because they were a collection of selfish stars rather than a cohesive team. This book is well worth the Amazon price (less than $14) and is a book that I know I will pick up to read again and again because of the anecdotes and stories. Bravo.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is The Ultimate Football Book, December 1, 2009

This review is from: The Ultimate Super Bowl Book: A Complete Reference to the Stats, Stars, and Stories Behind Football's Biggest Game - and Why the Best Team Won (Paperback)
This book grabbed my attention from the start and was impossible to put down. Even though we already know the bare facts: Who-What-When-Where, the author gives us the WHY and the HOW - making each game come alive again. I felt like I was with these teams from the meeting rooms to the practice fields and right into the game-day lockerroom...this is a MUST-READ which will turn even the casual football fan into a much more enlightened one.

Bob McGinn is a great sportswriter. He has compiled the best, and most information-laden book on all of the Super Bowl games. It is a 'must-have' for all football fans. His behind-the-scenes stories with the players or coaches telling their side of the story is just great. You will throughly enjoy this book if you are a football fan.

What makes this book such a treasure is how each Super Bowl is treated with the same respect. When most books pick a few of the better games to highlight, McGinn gives each one its props. The story for each game is a great timepiece that's not totally retrospective and reverential in view. Whichever team played and whatever the outcome, that Super Bowl was the biggest game of the year "that year". Each one deserves its own nod, because each had its own story.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Even if your team hasn't won a Super Bowl, you'll love this book if you're a football fan. There are a lot of fine details into what each team's strategy was going into the game including what worked and what didn't. Really interesting stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ultimate is Right!, April 14, 2010
This review is from: The Ultimate Super Bowl Book: A Complete Reference to the Stats, Stars, and Stories Behind Football's Biggest Game - and Why the Best Team Won (Paperback)
This book is a must-have for serious football fans. I can't recommend it enough. Even if you consider yourself a football expert, there is plenty in this book that will teach you something about the game. Bob McGinn knows the game from covering it at the highest level since the 1970s. Moreover, he knows who to go to for the key information. This book doesn't just focus on rehashing old stories; it gets behind the headlines with those who really know the game like assistant coaches. This book isn't about the glitzy halftime shows or the overpriced commercials; it's about what happened in the film rooms, practices and Super Bowls themselves. The Ultimate Super Bowl is a touchdown all the way.

This is a great book for the casual football fan and for the football fanatic. The author's personal stories of what occured in each of the superbowls is interesting reading. There are pages of statistics for the person who thinks they know everything. A super book.
