I was unable to buy this from Amazon as it was out of stock, but, after googling a little, I found the manufacturer's web site, Ultimate Survival Technologies at [...] (I don't work for them or anything)Most of their equipment is geared towards Military, Government, Law Enforcement and First Responders, however they do have a section for "Civilian and Recreation"
I retired from the Air Force after 23 years so this interested me as a great piece of survival gear as well as being a "must-have" camping item.
I have been camping for about 20 years, from pup tents to a pop-up camper, from hiking in the the Shenandoah valley to car camping at the nearby KOA, and have always wanted something like this that would always work in all conditions.
I bought 2 and went in my front yard and grabbed a handful of dried leaves from the garden with a smaller pile of dry grass from the yard mashed in the middle.
I flipped the top over, pushed down on the spring loaded flint and after 3 or 4 tries (it was my first time) I had a coal going in the tinder bundle.
Then I blew it in to a fire.
I was so excited I did it 3 more times before my wife got mad because I smelled like I had been rolling around in a campfire. {:-D
You *HAVE* to have one (or two) of these!
I also read a suggestion from a backpacking website that you can carry a small vial of cotton balls soaked with a little alcohol to use as a fire starter. This thing is AWESOME.

I've been collecting firestarters for years. This blast match creates the best sparks I have ever seen, and the sparks travel for a few inches instead of being localized right at the flint. The sparks created by this baby are large and plenty with each strike. The flint rod is generous, in fact its the biggest I've seen, and should give thousands or even tens of thousands of spark strikes. If you use this in conjunction with magnesium flakes, or any other typical tinder medium, you will have yourself a fire in no time. Super easy to use...I can start a fire very quickly. I would like to order more now...but they are out of stock!!!

The blast match is a nifty thing to have when you need it. It is made well enough for its purpose and it isn't too large to carry along, although sturdier and smaller would be good. I got into trouble attempting to cross a stream while dragging a deer this December here in the Kodiak islands. I got dunked in ice water with temps around 15 degrees, a 25kt wind was blowing and I had almost 2 miles of steep little hills covered with knee deep snow ahead of me. It wasn't as much fun as it sounds. Anyway, I was able to make a fire in spite of the fact that I could not bend my fingers to operate a lighter. Regular Bic lighters were my "go to" till I got one of these. You can use the blast match with one cold hand where you honestly couldn't flick a lighter to save your life. Sure, a guy might think of some way to make it "better"; reduce size or make it lighter, make it laser guided and have it delivered by miss America or something like that, but, I can't deny results. Five stars.

UPDATE!
Well... more of a qualifying statement really.
I've continued to use the blast match (same one) for the better part of a year now and I guess I've started 70 or 80 fires with it since that first use above. The thing is still going. *My qualifier: Don't go running into the woods expecting to point the blast match at a wet log in the rain and have the thing burst into flames; the planet cannon from the deathstar it is not. You still need DRY, fine, tinder or, better yet, do what I do which borders on cheating - I use little blocks of WetFire AND magnesium fire starter as well when I've got both to use and things are wet. I pile my tinder and wood shavings around the end of a sturdy chunk of wood that serves as my base plate.

This fire starter by UST is an absolute beast. The rod itself is about as thick and robust as firesteels come. This will make it last longer, providing you with more fires.

The cool aspect and philosophy behind the blastmatch is it allows you to operate it one-handed. With this feature, you can use your hand to block out wind when starting a fire, if need be. Simply use your thumb to push down on the striker and abruptly push the spring loaded steel to generate extremely hot sparks. Do to the size of the rod, this thing SHOWERS sparks. The rod also rotates 360 degrees so it will wear down evenly and you wont have one side of the rod depleated over time.

the plastic seems like it will hold up adequately over time. These were actually developed for Air Force fighter pilots so I imagine they went through some rigourous testing. The casing can also swivel over the top of the firesteel so it packs at a compact 4 inches.

Great little piece of gear for any camper or someone putting together an emergency kit. However, always you make sure you have backup ways for fire. The blastmatch has mechanical parts which makes it prone to possible failures with use over time. But I have not experienced this issue or heard of it yet. But dont take the chance. i highly recommend this fire starter over the competition.
