The Ultimate Survival BlastMatchTM was designed for Air Force fighter pilots at risk of being shot down in rugged terrain, or the mountain climber contending with challenging alpine weather. People like these need a fire starter that is operable with one hand in case of injury, won't surprise you by running out of fuel, and never fails to light in the wind, rain, or snow. The patented BlastMatchTM generates a stream of sparks three times the heat of a standard match and easily will light any material (wood, paper, bark, cloth, or man-made fire starting tinders) that a match will ignite. You can accurately aim the sparks to ignite a roaring fire in all weather conditions. If the BlastMatchTM becomes wet, simply wipe it off and it is ready for use. In combination with Ultimate Survival WetFire TinderTM, an all weather starting tinder, you can start a fire even in the driving rain. At the heart of the BlastMatchTM is a custom bar of high performance flint material. Spring loaded for compactness, the flint bar also rotates 360 degrees to help prevent uneven wear and tear. A tungsten carbide striker build into the striker button is set at the perfect angle for maximum sparking - taking the guess work out of starting a fire. Incorporated into the BlastMatchTM is a safety feature to prevent inadvertent ignition when accidentally plunged. The unique design requires the operator to press the thumb button in order to engage the striker mechanism.

I was unable to buy this from Amazon as it was out of stock, but, after googling a little, I found the manufacturer's web site, Ultimate Survival Technologies at http://www.ultimatesurvival.com/. (I don't work for them or anything)Most of their equipment is geared towards Military, Government, Law Enforcement and First Responders, however they do have a section for "Civilian and Recreation"
I retired from the Air Force after 23 years so this interested me as a great piece of survival gear as well as being a "must-have" camping item.
I have been camping for about 20 years, from pup tents to a pop-up camper, from hiking in the the Shenandoah valley to car camping at the nearby KOA, and have always wanted something like this that would always work in all conditions.
I bought 2 and went in my front yard and grabbed a handful of dried leaves from the garden with a smaller pile of dry grass from the yard mashed in the middle.
I flipped the top over, pushed down on the spring loaded flint and after 3 or 4 tries (it was my first time) I had a coal going in the tinder bundle.
Then I blew it in to a fire.
I was so excited I did it 3 more times before my wife got mad because I smelled like I had been rolling around in a campfire. {:-D
You *HAVE* to have one (or two) of these!
I also read a suggestion from a backpacking website that you can carry a small vial of cotton balls soaked with a little alcohol to use as a fire starter. This thing is AWESOME.

I've been collecting firestarters for years. This blast match creates the best sparks I have ever seen, and the sparks travel for a few inches instead of being localized right at the flint. The sparks created by this baby are large and plenty with each strike. The flint rod is generous, in fact its the biggest I've seen, and should give thousands or even tens of thousands of spark strikes. If you use this in conjunction with magnesium flakes, or any other typical tinder medium, you will have yourself a fire in no time. Super easy to use...I can start a fire very quickly. I would like to order more now...but they are out of stock!!!

Very simple in use. Took me 10 sec. to make a fire.
Plastic cover looks really "cheap" but it just needs to cover flint therefore In my opinion it is not important as long as it does great job. Box came with one piece of wet-fire witch is a good bonus. Don't forget it covered with lifetime warranty.
Excellent product!!!
