I bought one of these Star Flash mirrors about a year ago, and stuck it into my waist pack. I had hoped to use it as a regular mirror, too,Ultimate Survival 2x3 Star Flash Signal MirrorUltimate Survival 2x3 Star Flash Signal Mirror not just for emergencies. When I pulled it out, I found that the outer protective mirror casing was scratched to the point of translucence; there was no way to see a clear image. The device's so-called "protective case" must be protected from any abrasion whatsoever if a user expects the device to work. Too bad the seller does not instruct buyers to do that. The device actually has a lanyard hole which implies that the mirror could "hang out." Such exposure would ruin the surface in a short time.

It arrived in the mail today and I took it right outside and started experimenting. I was able to direct a blinding flash of light way down the street with plenty of accuracy. License plates and reflective signs blocks away were lit up blazingly bright by my little mirror. I couldn't have been more impressed.
The packaging (and the back of the mirror itself) directions say the mirror even works in hazy weather. That doesn't mean that it works in heavily overcast conditions. I tried and couldn't even get a weak reflection onto my own driveway.
It's still a pretty awesome little mirror. It is thicker than I thought it would be. Probably too thick for your average person to be willing to carry around in their wallets, but I have put mine in my wallet. Maybe I'm a dork, but I think it's cool and "I'd rather be looking at it than for it" if I unexpectedly need it.
Two other notes: it makes a great little mirror for makeup or plucking or whatever you need on the go. AND it floats!
I love it!

I like everything about this mirror. It's easy to use and works well.. Only thing I wish were different is the lanyard hole because it's not big enough for 550 paracord.

well iam, a ex-us army soldier, since my opinion, the product is not that good. is plastic and can float...thats good, but thats the only advantange, the weight, otherwise the reflection is a looooooot less than glass, now the big problem, YOU ARE NOT ABLE TO SEE ANYTHING ELSE AROUND WHEN YOU PINT THE HOT SPOT TO THE HORIZON, bad bad thing, i have my vector 1, and us army glass signal mirros, work much better, i just want to remember to the people...if you are lost in a aemergency situation, you do need a good quality reflective mirror, buy a glass mirror, don't be crazy, this is plastic and reflects probably 20 miles or more less than glass. and scratch really easy!!!! i did not like it. the weight is ok, everything else...is low quality comparing with a glass mirror.

The StarFlash aiming grid on this signal mirror is the worst implementation ever. For many applications you can simply see where the reflected patch of light falls and move that patch of light where you want just by looking at it. But if you want that reflected patch of light to shine up in the sky or above the horizon at sea (which is also the sky) you really need to look through the aiming grid. You of course can also simply hold your hand out in front of the mirror to check your aim, but then why have the aiming grid at all?

When you look through the aiming grid (or StarFlash in this case) you normally see a bright spot much brighter (and slightly larger) than the actual patch of reflected light. This bright spot created when looking through the aiming grid is also visible even when you can't see the reflected patch at all... like when you're aiming the mirror up into the sky at a plane or a ship on the horizon. But with the this StarFlash aiming grid there is almost no bright patch created, and what's worse is the patch that is visible can only be seen if you aim the mirror pretty much straight back at the sun (or a very near angle). Other wise it is blocked by the material around the star.

This may be OK for ground only signally, but why bother? Real signal mirrors that work are better and cheaper. This particular model is not made of glass, but it is very reflective and super lightweight. This does NOT belong in any survival kit.

Sturdy, unbreakable and scratch-resistant. It's a lightweight addition to any kit and will serve its purpose. It can be seen for miles. Make sure you practice aiming with this as it can get a little bit tricky with the angles. Overall an excellent product. The only thing that another reviewer noted is that it doesn't have a hole large enough to thread straight 550 paracord through it so you have to improvise and possibly use the inner strands as a loop. The only reason it gets 4 stars.

This is one of those basic, must-have tools that belongs in everyone's "go bag" or emergency supplies. I bought two for my stock of disaster stuff. (I live in tornado alley.) They are replacements for a Boy Scout signal mirror I owned (about $3.00 each) several decades ago. The sighting system is not as simple or straight forward as my old mirror, but is useful with a little practice. This is the only signal mirrow I could find that is close to what I wanted. It is far overpriced, but I would buy it again given the current product availability. I have practiced with this mirror and it works as intended and it could save your life.
