It is individually packaged in a lightweight solid cube form that can't leak or foul up your other gear. It leaves none of the residue of inferior petroleum-based products and is non-toxic. The cubes burn without smoke and can be started even in high winds and nasty weather. At high altitude you have enough to worry about without wasting energy trying to light an uncooperative stove. With WetFire™ tinder, this problem is solved. Just sprinkle a small amount of tinder shavings around the backpacker stove, and it lights instantly. Use it to light your backyard barbecue, or to start a fire in your living room fireplace. Make yourself popular when only you can start the late night beach bonfire.Over 1,300 degree Fahrenheit flame..Fire can start with only a small pile of shavings..For use with any UST or other sparking device, stormproof lighter and/or stove..5-year shelf life..

This is a great bug out bag addition or camping bag addition.
Tracey
These are really handy to have around when camping or backpacking and great for any emergency situation you might need to build a fire in less than ideal conditions.
Chris Massey
Works great for starting tinder on fire, have not tried it when wet yet, but so far so good for camping purposes.

These work very well, and they are a good addition to your emergency kits or general camping supplies. However, I only gave it four stars because of the cost. It's much, much cheaper to just make your own PET balls (google it) or use pieces of jute twine soaked in canning wax (my personal favorite). Anyway, if you don't have a problem with the cost, Wetfire is a good choice in that it's dependable and works very well.

These do work as advertised, but you must be aware that if the seal on the individual package is broken, exposing the wet fire tinder to the air for too long, it will not burn at all. I have crumbled them and started them with a spark, I have burned them floating in water. After being in my backpack for several months the seal became broken on most of them and they would not light. If they are to be left in a bag or carried for periods of time, they need to be packaged better.

This is some of the most versatile, easy-to-light manufactured tinder I've come across in many years. I still have some of the original cubes that came with my Gerber Strike Force system that I've had for a couple decades now. It only takes a small amount of shavings from a single cube to get a fire going in a hurry if you have some reasonably dry materials to work with - twigs, pine needles, dry leaves, etc. Shave off a little material from the cube, put your natural tinder on top or at the ready nearby, and strike sparks from a ferro rod or use a match - either way, the Wetfire shavings will ignite reliably in dry or humid conditions and burn hot enough and long enough to get your fire going. I've started well over a dozen campfires and warming fires with less than half a cube used - TOTAL.

You can cook with Wetfire cubes as well, but they leave a lot of soot behind on the cookware. Not a big deal if you're using stainless steel or an old soup can to cook in. It's a bit harder to get that soot off of aluminum, though. In my experience, one cube will boil 16 oz of water in about 8 minutes, give or take. That's good enough for me. Most of my dehydrated camp food only needs half that amount per serving, so I can use the other 8 oz for tea, coffee, hot chocolate, etc. Should also be enough burn time to fry an egg or two in a small frying pan. To get the most heat you might need some kind of a windbreak if there is any breeze at all, but then I've found this to be the case with many small stoves, cookers and burners.

Wetfires aren't the cheapest tinder option going, but they are reliable, light-weight, and adaptable to many environments and weather conditions. Solid 5-star rating.

I used these on a trip out west and they worked great. That being said make sure you use them within 6 months of purchase otherwise you'll be disapointed.

The way I use it.

Open the package and break the cube into. Crush up one half of the cube into a gooey mess. In order to take a good spark, it helps if some of it is crushed up. Spark the crush up half till it lights then ad the other uncrushed half to the flame. The uncrushed half will burn longer than the crushed half. Add tinder to it and bingo the fire will catch. Good stuff. Will work quite well even when other tinder is damp.

Good - but no cigar.

This is not a bad review. The stuff works as advertised. But cotton balls with vaseline or sap from the most of the trees that leak here in NW Montana work well too.

My really smart, pharmacist daughter doesn't know that stuff, so I bought these for her winter safety pack.

Fast shipping and a great product.

These things light easily and they burn hot. Just remember to crush them up a bit before use.

I rated it as okay because for next to nothing you can make cotton moisturized with Vaseline. It's best used when you carve it into little pieces.
