Tchaikovsky at his best for "everyman",
By
This review is from: Ultimate Tchaikovsky [Box Set] (Audio CD)
Of course, you can't talk about "Ultimate edition" of Tchaikovsky's music with only 5-CD-Box, but what you get for this price (now for unbelievable 11 USD!), is the most basic and popular of his great work - and all that in great artistic and sound quality! My personal favourite CD from this collection is without doubt the CD Nr. 2 - Vladimir Ashkenazy with St. Petersburg Orchestra and Chorus with the "war horses" like 1812 (one of the best I've ever heard - pls see my review on Amazon.com about this single CD by Decca Classic, Import), Romeo & Julliet and Serenade for Strings. There are conductors like Haitink (Symphony Nr. 5 + The Storm) or Dutoit (Ballet suites, Symphony Nr. 6 + Francesa di Rimini), there are artists like Henryk Szeryng (violine) or Rafael Orozco (piano) on CD Nr. 1 (famous Piano Concerto Nr. 1 in B flat minor and Violin Concert in D, Op. 35). Buy it, because I don't know a better (and cheaper) way to get so much great music by so great artists. All the recordings on this CD-Box are issued in the past by Decca on many single CDs (most of them are out-of-print or hard-to-find), so you can get it all-in-one. You will be sure not disappointed.

These comments are for the classical music CD set "The Ultimate Tchaikovsky". The set consist of 5 CD's and was released in 2007 by Decca Music Group.
Each CD is housed in a standard sized jewel box with the contents listed on the inside sleeve and the backing paper insert. Content listings include track titles, artist and track time. The total disk playtime is only listed on the inside jewel box sleeve and on the back of the storage box. There is no commentary or notes included with this set or with any of the Decca "Ultimate" sets for that matter. I regret that this is the case since I usually find this information very useful and informative. The five CD's come packaged in a snug fitting cardboard box, which is practical for storage and handling. I am not a musician or musical scholar. I do enjoy listening to classical music and the works of Tchaikovsky have always been a favorite of mine. In my opinion these are excellent recording of many of his well know works. I found two recordings of particularly exceptional: CD1 "Piano Concerto No. 1" with Edo de Waart conducting the Rotterdam Philharmonic and CD 2 "1812 Overture" with the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, Vladimir Ashkenazy conductor. Decca has released several of these "The Ultimate" five CD sets. The Ultimate Tchaikovsky is my eight set. The physical design of the other sets is identical to the description give in this review. My assumption is that a reputable label like Decca issuing sets titled "The Ultimate" would only select recording from their library judged to be outstanding examples of that artist works. I have not been disappointed. I find the "Ultimate" sets an economical way to become familiar with some wonderful and timeless music. The quality of the recordings and the bargain price make these sets well worth purchasing for the classical music enthusiast.

Disappointed,

The quality of this item is less than I expected. I would rather have this music done by well known artists in single CD's. The sound quality is poor at best. Some of the music I have on single CD's ie; Van Cliburn. The 1812 Overture sounds like a studio recording instead of cannons going off it sounds like a studio sound effect. In the future I will elect to buy Single recordings. (Please note: I have a box set of Beethoven 9 symphony's that is quite good)
