Fun covers collection,
By
This review is from: Ultimate Tribute (Audio CD)
I was never really a big fan of Swedish melodic rock band Baltimoore. Something about Bjorn Lodin's voice just never sat well with me. Still, I am a sucker for a good covers collection, so when I saw the band's Ultimate Tribute album on clearance I decided to take a chance. Here are the songs the band pays homage to:
1. Kill the King (Rainbow) - This is a great song to start things off on the right foot. 2. Rock Candy (Montrose) - This version sounds a bit more sluggish than the original, but Lodin's voice works well here. 3. Beggars Day (Nils Lofgren) - Baltimoore's take on this song is very similar to Nazareth's version on Hair of the Dog. 4. Never Say Die (Black Sabbath) - Great song from an underrated album, and one that I never expected to hear covered. 5. Samurai (Michael Schenker Group) - This was another good choice for Lodin's vocal style. 6. Freedom (Jimi Hendrix) - This one just doesn't work. The guitars just don't hold up to the original, which is why covering Hendrix is always a risky proposition. 7. She (KISS) - Another unexpected choice that ends up working very well. 8. Love Child (Deep Purple) - Baltimoore goes deep again, but this wasn't a great song to begin with. 9. Mississippi Queen (Mountain) - This turned out much better than I expected. It's probably the track on Ultimate Tribute that is the most fun. 10. Solid Gold Brass (Sweet) - "Action" probably would have worked a lot better, but perhaps that was too obvious a choice. 11. Riff Raff (AC/DC) - Another deep cut, and a fun one at that. 12. The Rocker (Thin Lizzy) - As effective a closer as "Kill the King" was an opener. You can't go wrong with this song. I'm still not a Baltimoore fan, but it's hard not to enjoy this fun romp through some classic rock songs. I wouldn't recommend going out of your way for it, but if you can get it cheap, by all means pick up a copy of Ultimate Tribute.
