5.0 out of 5 stars A great simple guide to the basics!
I really enjoyed this book. Erik's first book "Vegan: The New Ethics of Eating" is what originally got me to go vegan in the first place. His writing style is simple and accessible. Unfortunately, after a year i had a bit of a spotty vegan record.

I decided i needed to recommit and proly just lost sight of why i went vegan in the first place. I re-read...

3.0 out of 5 stars VegNews Magazine on The Ultimate Vegan Guide
[...] publisher and author Erik Marcus' latest, The Ultimate Vegan Guide, might be the shot in the arm needed for those still a little gun-shy about their activism. "I wrote this book to tell you everything I have learned from 20 years as a vegan," Marcus declares in his introduction. After a brief "Why?" section, he spends the bulk of the book on "How?," with chapters...

5.0 out of 5 stars A great simple guide to the basics!, February 2, 2009
This review is from: The Ultimate Vegan Guide: Compassionate Living Without Sacrifice (Paperback)

I re-read "Vegan" and got this book too. I am right back on track.

This is not only a GREAT read for someone interested in Veganism, it is great for relatively new vegans also. It has some great simple advice on how to prepare yourself and your life for the change. I really loved that chapter that dealt with cravings.

It's a wonderful introduction to living a cruelty free and compassionate lifestyle :D Thanks Erik for writing another winner!

5.0 out of 5 stars Always a Pleasure, May 28, 2009

Erik Marcus' guide to being vegan is a matter-of-fact, helpful approach for us everyday, run of the mill, vegans next door. Guides like "Vegan Freak" are amusing, but the tone can be a turn-off for anyone not into the punk scene. I appreciate Marcus' care for the reader's personal health and step-by-step approach to making a smooth transition. For those who are already vegan it's a practical refresher on nutrition, smart activism; including good ideas for quickie stir-fries, sandwiches and smoothies with a bonus recipe for cashew cheese in the appendix. I also found a lot of online resources I wasn't aware of like barnivore.com and restaurant reviews through yelp.

When I want well-researched, good-humored, intelligent vegan information I turn to Erik Marcus.

How great that the kindle version of this book is only 99 cents! I bought the paperback edition to have at home and then spent that extra dollar to have it on the kindle ap on my iphone as well.

I'm also buying copies for friends who are kind of on-the-fence about vegan diet--wanting to take the plunge but feeling unsure about whether they can do it. This book is so non-judgmental and reassuring, and so packed with practical tips, that I think it will give many aspiring vegans the confidence they need to take that first step.

It's a worthwhile purchase for vegan activists and educators, too--a great manual on how to help others go vegan.

Highly recommended for seasoned vegans, newbies, and anyone who is just starting to think about going vegan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Read!, July 20, 2011

I loved this book. I uploaded it on my kindle and read it while traveling. Lots of great tips to help make the transition easier. I have been a vegetarian most of my life and made the switch to a whole food, plant based diet. Never felt better in my life and I thought I was healthy before the switch!
Easy to follow, great tips, and a great attitude, this book is a must:)

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent "How-To" Guide, June 1, 2011
This book is a great resource for people interested in transitioning to a more healthful, environmentally-friendly, and compassionate way of eating. Marcus demonstrates that "vegan" doesn't have to equate sacrifice, and that incorporating vegan foods can mean more creative cooking and fun dining out. His tips are practical and based on experience. Marcus' writing is fluid and easy to read as well. This book is an important part of my at-home library, and I would recommend it to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Ultimate Vegan Guide, February 28, 2009
This review is from: The Ultimate Vegan Guide: Compassionate Living Without Sacrifice (Paperback)
I was really impressed with this book. I am making baby steps to become vegetarian/vegan; even though I am in an area where there are very few health stores with diverse items and that's another reason I liked his book was because he doesn't make it seem an impossible task or goal if one chooses to pursue. And thank goodness for the Internet. I also like his writing style it was very easy to read and flows very well. I read it in under two days. Here's a link to the book so I believe that if you even are considering a vegetarian lifestyle I would highly recommend this book. The Ultimate Vegan Guide: Compassionate Living Without Sacrifice

I bought this book for my 18-yr-old niece who has been a vegetarian her whole life but whose family isn't...she LOVES this book and it makes her feel like there are many others out there like her...and she says the book has answered so many of her questions...

4.0 out of 5 stars A kind of vegan book, November 23, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Even after reading the online sample, I assumed that this book was going to be the typical vegan tome with a twist or two. IT IS NOT. This unique book deals with the myriad of details that an aspiring vegan needs to justify going vegan and make their effort a success. As a five year near vegan, I found a number of really helpful tips and insights to improve my vegan lifestyle, The book supplies links to a wide variety of vegan community support materials that would take untold hours to accumulate. I particularly like the Kindle version, with it's searching and annotation functions but some Kindle functions did not work for me.. Anyone contemplating going vegan needs this book.

This review is from: The Ultimate Vegan Guide: Compassionate Living Without Sacrifice (Paperback)
This book covers all things vegan--cooking tips, travel, social situations, and many etceteras--without being preachy and strident. Practical yet readable, I highly recommend it as a companion to a book like Becoming Vegan, which focuses mainly on nutrition. Kudos to Erik for creating a straightforward guide that helps make going vegan not only do-able but fun!
