5.0 out of 5 stars This is a great buy for vegetarians!
I bought this book about 3 months ago, and it is a great cookbook. It has a wide variety of recipes from all over the world, from lasagna to tofu curry. There is also a full-color picture of each item in the book, making it easy to scan for a new recipe idea.

2.0 out of 5 stars not the best cookbook for vegans
while this book is more or less acceptable for most vegetarians, too many recipes contain eggs and dairy to be appropriate for vegans. a few contain anchovy paste or oyster sauce, neither of which i consider to be very vegetarian, but as this book has kind of a dated feel to it, that could explain the sketchy ingrediants. even ovo-lacto vegetarians may be uncomfortable...

5.0 out of 5 stars The best vegetarian cookbook, August 19, 2000
This review is from: The Ultimate Vegetarian Cookbook (The Ultimate Series) (Hardcover)
There are so many vegetarian cookbooks out there. I first found this book in the community college's library. I tried 4 dishes from this book, and they tasted great. I had to buy it. I recommend it to my friend, and she bought one too. All the dishes are healthy and flavory, and you don't even remember they are meatless.

This is one of the only vegetarian cookbooks I still use (my husband and I are no longer vegetarian). The recipes are absolutely excellent! They are easy to follow and taste really good. I would highly recommend this cookbook to anyone who likes a lot of variety in their diet!

An easy to follow cookbook with step by step pictures. The creativity and variety of the recipes appeal to vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. I haven't found a recipe I didn't like in this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Vegetarian Cookbook, July 22, 2008
By
This review is from: The Ultimate Vegetarian Cookbook (The Ultimate Series) (Hardcover)
This is one of the best vegetarian cookbooks. Roz Denny has a great selection of varied recipes. The beautiful colored pictures of both processes and plated results help also. We've tried many of the recipes; there has never been a bad one. We love the "mushroom gougere", "spiced Indian cauliflower soup", hhmm! When I serve the "couscous aromatique", guests think I've made something very exotic. I even took the more unusual Parsnip Pie to a Christmas Charles Dickens party where we brought authentic 1800's period dishes; it was enjoyed and few people eat parsnips. I buy this book for family and friends. Roz Denny is a talented chef. Bon Appetit.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice book, varied ethnic recipes, June 20, 2006
By
This review is from: The Ultimate Vegetarian Cookbook (The Ultimate Series) (Hardcover)
A passionate home cook that has been honing her cooking skills for the last 25 years writes this review. My favorite cookbooks are "The Professional Chef" by the Culinary Institute and "Culinary Artistry". With more than 500 cookbooks in my collection I am usually disappointed in my recent cookbook acquisitions. This book is a wonderful addition to any cookbook library for those that are interested in vegetarian cooking. This book is a vegetarian cookbook but does include vegan recipes as well.

The book is subdivided as follows:

Soups and Appetizers
Light Lunches and Suppers
Main Courses
Salad and Vegetable Dishes
Parties and Picnics
Virtually Vegetarian
Desserts and Breads

This cookbook provides recipes from many different cuisines. There are Indian, Indonesian, Irish, English, American, Italian, Greek, Russian, Thai and French to mention a few. If you are a looking for a cookbook that offers a wide variety of vegetarian recipes this is a nice book.

Each recipe has a full color photo provided on the page opposite the recipe. The authors also include smaller photos of some of the intermediate steps in the recipes.

Some of the measures are imprecise. For example "grate a small piece of ginger." However, since I always season to taste this is not a big issue for me.

The specific recipes that I have found to be very good are: The Chunky Vegetable Paella (vegan), Multi-mushroom Stroganoff, Persian Rice and Lentils with a Tahdeeg, Ratatouille Tart (vegan when you leave out the Mozzarella), and Red Onions Stuffed with Feta and Pine Nuts.

Overall I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to add more meatless meals into their life, or anyone that is considering becoming a vegetarian. The dishes are varied enough that you will not miss the meat. Do not buy this book if you "Vegetarian and Vegetable Cooking" by Christine Ingram and Roz Denny, the recipes are duplicates of that book. Same recipes and same photos.

4.0 out of 5 stars This Book is Da Bomb!, January 27, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Ultimate Vegetarian Cookbook (The Ultimate Series) (Hardcover)
My family discontinued eating meat, or anything non Organic a few months ago. The big problem was figuring out how to keep my hubby fed with good tasting dishes that would not have him missing his meat. We visited my son and DIL in Texas, and she borrowed this cook book for while we were there. I sat with it one night and fell in love. Just had to have it. Ordered it from Amazon the day we got back, and I use it ALL the time. What I love is that it SHOWS you how the various steps should look, as I am not a whiz in the kitchen, that helps immensely! You will not regret this purchase. PS by the way, hubby wants NOTHING to do with meat in his food any more! Our meals are actually much more interesting now than the old meat and potatoes days!

5.0 out of 5 stars Delicious!, April 7, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this book to expand my repertoire of healthy and tasty vegetarian recipes. It went beyond my expectations in it's variety, clarity and straightforwardness. Each recipe is accompanied by a large full colour photo as well as photos during the preparation process. The recipes are all incredibly tasty and the ingredients are generally straight-forward and easy to find in the supermarket. The handful of recipes I have tried so far have all come out beyond my expectations (lentil and spinach lasagna, saffron rice pilaf with pistachio nuts, sweet red onion and courgette pizza with handmade dough) If you're looking to get a bit creative with flavours while maintaining a healthy vegetarian diet I whole-heartedly recommend this book.

This cookbook is fantastic. I have made multiple purchases of it for every woman in my family, even those who don't cook because the pictures are so wonderful. If you read cookbooks like most women read love stories, you will love, Love, LOVE this one.
